I heard it held some nice panfish years ago. Does it still? Anybody been out there lately? I assume since it is very close to town it gets hit pretty hard, just curious.

I used to rent an apartment on that lake. I've never ice fished it, but have open water fished it.

I haven't done so well with panfish, though I heard from an older gentlemen that there are some nice crappies that will school up near the northern shoreline in the spring.

I've probably had best luck in late spring/early summer. If you follow the lake to the northeast (past the scout camp), you will see a bay that gets more and more narrow. Lots of northerns and bass hang out in here early in the season. Most pike were average size, buts lots of fun when you literally get a pike every cast.

Also, depending on how narrow your boat is, there is a little pond inside the scout camp on the north side of the lake. This camp is fed by a narrow channel from Rice Lake. If you can make it in there, this body of water warms up the quickest, and I've had lots of luck with bass here.

Hope this helps. best of luck.

I also used to rent an apartment on the lake 13 years ago and ice fished it quite a bit with pretty good luck. Crappies, sunnies and an occasional walleye. In fact, I've caught walleye up to 28.5" out there while crappie fishing. Remember, it is part of the river so it has a good supply of fish from year to year. From what I've heard lately, the fishery is about the same with good numbers to be caught and the typical difficulty catching the nicer crappies.

One tip I always did was to stay away from the groups of houses. The lake is just a basin and the fishing is better if you stay a couple hundred yards away from the groups.

One other tip: I always found the crappies closer to or right on the bottom versus suspended like on most of the lakes I ice fish. And, mid afternoon CAN be better than after dark.

I would definitely give it a try.

You can still fish Mille Lacs during the closure from July 1-15.  You just can't specifically target a walleye or use live bait.  There's plenty of smallmouth bass and pike in the lake that you can target with artificial lures and you might get lucky with a muskie.   The wind can be an issue out there though.  If that doesn't sound appealing to you, try the Rum River.  There is an access in Kathio State Park that would work well for a kayak.  You could go upstream and downstream from there too.   I think you will need to purchase a daily pass to use that access in the park (it might be like 5 bucks).  I haven't fished there in years but I fish the Rum River further downstream every season and the fishing in there is fantastic during midsummer.  Look for current breaks, seams, and deeper holes.

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier. Glad your place was ok. Lake Country power said they had 20 poles toppled in one area!

You still have your trailer and place up there? Maybe you should do some summer rentals of it to help pay the taxes and up keep on it? 👍

The water is starting to slowly go down. From what I can tell it looks like it’s down about 5-6 inches. The wind was terrible over the weekend though. I’m sure many properties suffered damages with Sundays winds. Things are finally starting to head in the right direction but it’s going to take a very long time for things to get back to even somewhat normal.

Stopped at VC last week as well.  Didn't have pizza, but the sandwiches and appetizers we had were good.  The service was very good.  However, that's the first and only time we had been there.

Any other info about VC?   Got kid and and fam coming up.  Been a couple years but really liked it.   Reviews on line still good.   Did Mark just hit on a bad night or has it gone down?   Being on west not a place we go often.
