January 21st - slow day on the ice

Sutty and I drove out of Hunter's and fished 2 mile. Very slow fishing. We had heard about an excellent perch bite the days before, but it shut down on Saturday. We took 3 perch, kept two, and one smallish keeper walleye. We tried a lot of presentations, and fish were there, but just not biting. Wind was out of the east, and wasn't too bad early on, but after noon it picked up pretty good. Was a bit cold too, not the 35ish degrees that weather.com was forecasting.

We did see a couple groups take big walleye, but over the slot, so they had to be released.

Saw lots of guys racing around on snowmobiles, so I can only assume the fishing was slow for them as well.

I will agree with you. A buddy and I were up there Friday night and all day Saturday. 2 perch off of Sechucie. One 27 in. and 2 rock bass off of Garrison Reef, and nothing off of the Boot. We marked fish every where we went but they were just tight lipped. Just wonder what it will take too lossen them up.

Speak for yourself, I hammered the perch and walleye this past weekend!! I missed many, many hooksets only to catch the fish minutes later with the shiner or crappie minnow in its mouth from my rattle reel.

Best weekend ever on Mille Lacs!

Me and my dad went up friday moring to mille lacs 1/20/06. We went out of hunters point and fished two mile reef. We hammered the jumbo perch. I have never caught these big of perch in my life. By Saturday at noon we had 80 jumbo perch our limit. We limited out friday and saturday and had our 40 in posession. Our biggest perch was 13 1/2 inches that was a pound and a half. Our average perch was 11 inches. It is the best trip we have ever had on Mille lacs. We also caught three 17 inch walleye. IT was awesome.

It kind of depended where you were at, I was out of Cove Bay in the flats and had perch everywhere on Saturday, but mostly small ones did manage 7 - 9" plus and also a 18" walleye, plus two in the slot. I could catch the small ones but had to use a small presentation with waxies because the perch in that area were gorged with caddis nymphs.. Sunday the wind changed and could hardly find a perch.

Heck, I was slaying the walleyes with the perch this past weekend! I even had a big northern hit a rattle reel. The northern just slammed the shiner which resulted in line from the rattle reel flying every where in the shack. I was doing all I could to hold my own against the northern as it was running line out on me. I started to make a little ground on the northern and then...the mono leader on the rattle reel snapped and I never did get to see the beast. frown.gif

I don't think the houses around me were catching squat. I guess it was my weekend. smile.gif

maybe you are like a fishing god or something.

I have spent many, many weekends including nights on Mille Lacs without catching a single fish and sometimes not even have a single bite. I prefer to think I was just lucky this past weekend and the fish gods were shining upon me.

We were on Garrison Reef from 8:30 pm fri night till about midnite and got a 14 inch walleye and a 7 in perch. Went back out sat am at 7 and stayed for about an hour and got a 20.5 inch walleye and a 9 inch perch. Sat night at 5:30 got a 24.5 in walleye and a 8 in perch. Marked lots of fish but getting them to bite was tough.

Fished Round Lake from noon to three and got squat.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
