can fish be cleaned on the lake?

is it legal to clean fish on the lake? I'm renting a house this weekend and I've heard you can't clean fish out there. How are we supposed to have a fish fry? Or, do we have to run to shore to clean the fish?

I understand the reasoning, not wanting people to double up. I'm just looking for a way to have a perch fry for lunch one day.

Absolutely NOT, you can't even take fish out on the lake from some other lake! becasue of the Slot that millacs has on it, so Don't take any chances, not like having a good evening fresh fish fry.

so, what do guys do that rent houses for extended periods of time.

I'm not one to take chances, that's why i asked smile.gif. it sure would be nice to have a fish fry, but i have a freezer full of venison. just as good! Besides, w/ my luck up there this year I'd be lucky to get a meal anyway.

Crestliner,

I understand the slot and cleaning walleyes, but what about perch or if a person chose to eelpout? The regulations say that you are not to leave the entrails on the lake, so if you cleaned a batch of perch and had all the bodies, skins, etc, which you have to keep and haul off the lake as evidence???

Any fish fillet that does not have a patch of skin left on for identification is deemed to be a walleye fillet. This can get real tricky with slot regs. on alot of waters. I know walleye fresh out of a pan is much better than a ham sandwich or a slice of venison jerky, but it's not worth a hefty fine. blush.gif

I'm not so sure you are correct with your "absolutely not" statement. From the 2005 regulations, page 17 & 18:

"While on or fishing waters with size restrictions, all fish for which the size restriction applies must have their heads, tails, fins, and skin intact and be measurable except when a watercraft is docked or moored to shore and the person is preparing the fish for that nights/days meal"

As there is no size restriction for yellow perch on Mille Lacs, it would appear that it is legal to fillet and eat perch inside of your fish house. Obviously, you must stay within the daily and posession limit, including those you ate within that number. And if you fillet them in your house and wish to transport them home then they need to have the 1" patch of skin.

If someone can quote a regulation that contradicts this interpretation please do so.

Here is the response I got from the DNR when I asked the question of eating walleyes on Mille Lacs:

No, you cannot fry up any fish where there is a slot limit. Mille Lacs has a slot limit on walleyes, northern, smallmouth bass and tullibee, so you cannot cook any of those species. You can fry up perch, sunnies, crappies and other species that have no slot limit on that lake.

I heard recently the water level had gone down some. Sound like folks are re really dealing with a mess.    Fishing pictures look like a good year in that regard.   Hope the property loss isn't terrible but seems bad.   Bill

Yesterday was a grind to find bigger fish but we landed a few. Only 3 fish overall but they were all nice fish, all C&R. I do believe the sunfish are out of the shallows besides small ones. Thursday I took the nephews out and didn't see any on beds.

Glad you keep coming back, Mark. And glad you still know the way to catch a slew of walleyes. I wish i could’ve learned more while you were here. But I appreciate all the information you provide on what worked for you.  Strange year. We just got part of our dock in and our boat. I fished a couple hours this morning for the first time on a Frazer hump you know and caught ten under 12” and one keeper which I released… a nice 26+“. I’m hoping more to come soon. I hope all is well with you, Dick

Maybe the bamboozler will end up being like every fish story, some old timers holding their hands out as wide as possible to demonstrate to a youngster just how big it was....

Fished a bigger lake, fish or at least the eaters are on the mid lake humps. Water Temps 68 degrees, freezer now has 6 total as I've been eating fish often. Tomorrow we chase the 30" walleye for catch and release.
