Ice conditions on the big Winni

Recommended Posts

Any reports on the ice conditions and how thick on the lake?

Just would like to know so we know what vehicles we can bring for the Tourney.

Last report said that there was 14" a while ago. I got a Ford Superduty Diesel... ???? HUMMM need more ice than that..

Last weekend there was approximately 15 inches of good solid ice everywhere we went. I saw trucks just like yours pulling dual axled covered trailers around out there. I don't know if I would do that, but I did see it. Ice really cracked and popped when trucks like this passed by. Quite a bit more than when 1/2 ton trucks did.

I've been driving on the Winne since the Wed. after X-Mas.. As of today (Thursday) there is 18" of ice and the report from some buddies last night is a 6" wide crack developed across the entire lake..... I have no clue if this is true or where the crack is located... This morning it was 15 degrees up here and tonights low is suppose to be 5 above along with tomm. night too.... Saturday the high is now suppose to be 15 above... I was hoping to call a few resorts and see what/where the news is about the crack... It could of already frozen up or is the start of another heave... There is one big heave out there now.... Good luck and hope this helps...

We found 17 or so inches of good ice most everywhere. We worked out of the south end of the lake, and there was a large heave/crack across the south end...coming out of Denny's or Nodak, you had to cross it. Both resorts had roads plowed that got you across the crack easily. Driving everywhere on the lake. Not much snow, so the current cold weather should add to the ice...

I would say your in the clear. We've been going out of the birches landing up by highbanks easily getting out. 18-20 inches where we were. Very few people not driving out. Lets hope for some cold weather to thicken it up a bit more. The more the better for me.

Thanks fellas... We are bringing a trailer with a house and ATV... I love fishing but not having some one fishing for me.. LOL....

Any good bite areas. The contour maps on my GPS show some real good clifs out there.

Ludlows and Muskego both hit hard.  The Dayton place had a lot of big trees down, not sure of structural damage.  Some say a tornado skipped thru that area.  Looking at the destruction, I could believe it.  I feel bad for those impacted by this storm.   Below are a few snap shots of common sights around the area a day or two after the storm.

Mike, was there a lot of damage in the Ely area?

Drove through Annandale last Tuesday and was really bummed to still only see the old cement slab at Little Jim's. Hope they can get it built-back-better! 🙂

I heard recently the water level had gone down some. Sound like folks are re really dealing with a mess.    Fishing pictures look like a good year in that regard.   Hope the property loss isn't terrible but seems bad.   Bill

Yesterday was a grind to find bigger fish but we landed a few. Only 3 fish overall but they were all nice fish, all C&R. I do believe the sunfish are out of the shallows besides small ones. Thursday I took the nephews out and didn't see any on beds.

Glad you keep coming back, Mark. And glad you still know the way to catch a slew of walleyes. I wish i could’ve learned more while you were here. But I appreciate all the information you provide on what worked for you.  Strange year. We just got part of our dock in and our boat. I fished a couple hours this morning for the first time on a Frazer hump you know and caught ten under 12” and one keeper which I released… a nice 26+“. I’m hoping more to come soon. I hope all is well with you, Dick

Maybe the bamboozler will end up being like every fish story, some old timers holding their hands out as wide as possible to demonstrate to a youngster just how big it was....
