First timer needs help.

Recommended Posts

I would like to make my first visit to the Rainy Lake areas this summer. We are looking at the first week of August. We would like to camp (tent) and would appreciate any information regarding the boating conditions (I will have a small Ranger fish/ski). Also I would be interesting in finding a campsite located on the shoreline, so the wife can jump in the car and I and my two boys can jump in the boat. Any help for a first timer would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!!

Twoboys, Maybe I can help... I good choice for an area to camp. One good spot here on kabetogama, that would meet the Mom goes in the car and Dad and the boys go in the boat, is Woodenfrog Campground.. There are about 62 primitive sites, low cost, good boat launch, and lots of places for Mom to shop and tour. Guys can hit the boat. That time of year, eyes on the reefs, Smallies on rock piles, and big Pike on deep weedlines. Fun for everyone. Good Luck Fishkab

I agree with Fishkab. Woodenfrog is a very nice campground. Good boat launch, beach, and close to good fishing areas. I have camped there several times in the past, and now stay at a resort a few hundred feet from there. My wife walks over there every morning for exersize.

Thanks for the help. A couple of questions on Woodenfrog Campgrounds.

If I arrive during the week (Tues. or Weds.) in early August is it likely I can get a camp site?

Is there a place to keep a boat in the water or does one have to trailer it in and out each day?

Thanks again for all of the help!

You'll have no problem getting a good camp site... as far as leaving the boat in the water....there is know where to legally leave your boat in the water along shore, but Arrowhead Lodge is right next to the woodenfrog boat landing and for a couple bucks you can rent one of their slips...they have lots of room.

There's a small dock in the campground but I don't know if it's legal or not for overnight. A few people drag their boats up on shore to the side of it. I would want to keep my boat where I can keep an eye on it. I would take it out at night.

  • 2 weeks later...

My recommendation would be Harmony Beach Resort. They have some nice campsites, shower facilites and docking. The owners are nice people and very accomodating. Tell the wife it's a long way to anywhere from Kabby unless she's looking for the woods.

Two Boys, Down Deep gave you an excellent recomendation, for a great place to set up camp. The park service has summer programs of various interests. Harmony Beach has a small beach in the harbor area for swiming, and its a great time of year for tubing, skiing and etc if the afternoons get slow or hot. Depending on your boat type, you could go to Kettle Falls for a visit and lunch, and fish some spots in Namakan if Kabs slow.

If the Mrs. is insistent on getting in the car, the Falls is 30 miles North and some folks like to venture accross the border which is right there. Bingo is a ritual at the community club played twice a week.

Good luck, guts

First I want to thank everyone for all of their help, it is appreciated. We have now made final plans and we are staying at Driftwood Lodge instead of camping (mom will be much happier, and you know what they say).

We will be there the week of 7/15 and I was wondering if any of you might tell what we can expect in the way of fishing. Not having fished here before and at this time of year I have no idea on tactics or what to expect. I have a Ranger Reata with a 135 so I can get around the the lake(s) in a reasonable amount of time. Although I must admit the idea of losing a lower unit has entered my mind, but nothing ventured nothing gained.

Thanks again!

two boys,

Glad you booked in on Kab, yes you will be able to travel, which in July, that can be important. Water temps and water levels are big factors fishing that time of year. In fact at that time you may find it to be quite a transitional period of time, as to fishing Kab or Namakan, course that depends on speices. I suggest you make yourself at home on this website and follow or read advice of others, its invaluable.

The Gateway Store, at the lake entrance, puts out fishing reports each week and usually knows what, and has what you need for fishing, lures or live bait and whatever.

Stay in touch, and good luck, guts

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
