Another Heads up Trappers

Lunker

Recommended Posts

Was driving down 50th today in MPLS when I saw a huge humane society billboard. The words "I am not a coat" over the picture of an arctic fox.

Now, I am not a trapper, but of course am a supporter, as well as a hunter and fisherman, and this billboard made me furious. The Humane Society is notoriously Anti-Trapping and Anti-Hunting. While they continue to pump out this b.s., we all know trappers numbers are dwindling. Just wanted to ask everyone who hunts, fishes, or traps or even just supports the above to be aware of the constant battle trapping is in(of course we all know this already).

When it comes time to vote or give input on trapping laws and rights, don't let the trappers stand alone. Even if you don't trap, support it and give them h3ll.

By the way do you think the fox told them that? Blah!

I agree with you Lunker. Some of my co-workers are surprised to find out the humane society of the united states is anti-hunting. They think it's just for cats and dogs. Trapping is their easiest target. If that gets knocked down, you know hunting is next. I am a member of the MTA even though I do not trap/never have trapped because I am a hunter and a fisherman. Not saying anybody has to join an organization, but everyone should be aware of what's going on. Like Lunker said, "Don't let the trappers stand alone." We are all in this together.

My son and I are on our way to a hockey practice, and we're both seeing the sign - Jr. says

"He's right - too small for a coat, but he'd make a nice hat or pair of mittens. Or I guess you could shoot a few more and get enough for a coat!"

I have had lots of dealing with the Humane Society. I give education demos and speak to 4h and youth groups on behalf of the MTA. The Humane Society love that!! The MTA is ready to fight back we are all aware of them. They have said " trappers first then bowhunters". We are all in this batlle together.

Thank you.

Actually the humane society is just for cats and dogs et al, and is a shelter for those animals. The humane society of the united states is a totally seperate organization that just hides behind a name, slightly changed, to make them immediatley sound more legitimate. They are almost always referred to as the humane society in most media reports or conversations. Even when of the united states is added, most people still assume it's the humane society that's being talked about.

I'm not sure how much this even matters, but when you have to pull the wool over peoples eyes (synthetic wool I'm guessing), it just shows how devious and tricky these kind of people are. mad.gif

I'm no trapper myself, but there's nothing like a nice fur cap on my ugly mug on a cold day on the ice. It's like being in a sauna. blush.gif

Help the cause.... BUY FUR!!!!

While I trap, fish, hunt, I also try and do my part by making sure atleast everyone in my family has a piece of that Warm, comfortable fur on.

It doesn't have to be a big Mink coat, scarfs, hats, vests, earmuffs are all reasonably priced for the average consumer.

Protrapper,

Thanks for all of your help promoting the sport of Trapping to the youth and all your work through the MTA!

Yeah, that's I guess what I was trying to say, igotem. They (co-workers) don't get it. Many people don't understand that there is a difference. And then there are a few here that are more than happy to jump on that anti-everything bandwagon. mad.gif

Kinda unrelated but interesting. As I got out of my DU, PH, MDHA clad truck in a public parking lot I noticed a car plastered in animal rights stickers. The clincher was when the woman in the car got out her coat appeared (Im quite sure it was) to be leather. I guess that cow, or steer must have just stripped down for her coat! The best I could do to keep from laughing was smile. Just another ironic example of their methods.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
