Report: Hunters Point 1/13 &1/14

I along with 9 other friends went out of Nitti's Hunters Point this past weekend. We drilled a lot of holes and did very well. 25 feet of water most of the time. We were using jigging spoons in fire tiger colors and white, a couple guys also used Hali spoons with a dropper. We also used set lines with fatheads. We started each morning around 8am and quit around dark. It seemed the bite stopped as soon as the sun set. Final totals for the weekend for 10 guys: 124 keeper perch, none under 9 inches were kept...most were 11-12 inches and we caught a couple that were 14 inches. 19 walleye, 10 we were able to keep. All the keeper walleyes were over 15 inches and under 20 inches.

I'll be the first to admit that of the 10 guys fishing, only about 6 were "fishing hard". But we all managed to catch plenty of fish and have a great time. I hope this post helps! By the way, from the sounds of it, Hunters Point access should be finally ready to go for the rest of the winter...they really put a lot of work into it during the weekend.

I'm not totally sure. Which day did you see the group of guys? We drilled a lot of holes both days. I know we were west of Lakeside Reef...

We were at Hunters resort Saturday(1-13-06). We were driving down there road, and were the main road goes there was a 4-wheeler unloading there, so we continued to go strait. The access on that side was blocked off, so to the right there looked to be a road so we took it to the resort. When we were about to get out of the truck, a worker came out yelling and swearing at us. Told us we should not be here. I understand that we should not have drove there, but the way we got treated was not right. Anyone else have problems at this resort?

No never, they wanted to make sure you did not drive over the crack and kill yourself.

They were working on the roads, and did change the route out to the main lake a couple times over the weekend. The worker was just making sure you were safe. Nitti's have always been good to me and my friends.

This is an odd winter, and the resorts on the lake haven't gone through this is a few years. Just make sure you stop by the office/bar/restaurant each morning before heading out to make sure they haven't changed the roads and to also check the road conditions. I know Hunters Point has a map of their roads that is updated each morning if there are any changes on the front door to their bar you can check out before heading out.

Ya, a few weeks back my dad and I were trying to get back on the ice after the bridge by shore went out. One of their workers was very nice and wanted to help us, but his coworker, maybe manager, was very loud and yelling a lot at him to get to work on the bridge and not deal with us. I think it just depends on who you deal with, I'm sure they do a great job keeping people safe. Maybe just a bit stressfull, leading to the yelling and swearing when someone does something like take the wrong un-marked road....

I have fished there many of times, and never had a problem. I know this year has been more stressful than manyt others because of the ice conditions. The fishing has been good but i really fell like these guys are working there tails off to try and keep everyone safe. One person goes through and it gives that resort a pretty bad rep, especially if someone gets hurt or even worse dies. not sure i would want that on my concious to have someone die through the ice where i made a road for them. just my two cents

Never had a problem with those guys at Hunters. I have had difficulties with a place just north of that location. You know, guy says he has a road out there, takes your $7 bucks (at the time), you go out on the road to find it unplowed and only a half mile out, you come back and ask for your money back because you were not told that the road didnt go out very far, and they smile and say no. That was the last time I let anyone take "Liberty" with my money and time.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
