remington 1100 - 2 3/4"

I have a remington semi 1100 shotgun that only holds 2 3/4" shells. Is there a way I can modify it to hold 3 1/2 shells? a kit? some ajustments?

Or is this not possible at all.

Depending on whether or not you have a Magnum receiver (some of the 2 3/4 are NOT magnum) you may be able to buy a steel shot barrel which will allow you to shoot 3" steel, but I can't imagine that you would ever be able to move up to 3 1/2".

Easiest thing to do is to contact customer service at Remington (go to their website) and give them the serial number of your shotgun. They can tell you what your options are.

I don't believe that 1100 will even shoot 3" and certainly not 3 1/2" shells.

If he has a magnum receiver he can buy one of the steel shot barrels and shoot 3" steel (not lead). If its not a magnum receiver, he's stuck with 2 3/4". At least that's the info Remington gave me when I asked.

To answer your question, no you can not modify the 1100 2 3/4 to shoot 3 1/2" shells. The problem is not so much the chambering, which could most likely be modified if you had a strong enough desire to do so, look at all the wildcat rifles guys make. The problem is more the the stroke of the action, I don't see this gun being able to eject the longer shell, remember a 3 1/2" shell is almost 4 inches long after being fired.

LD - You probably see more 2 3/4's but I've got a 3" 1100 in my cabinet . And Jackpine I think you're right, mine has "Magnum" on the receiver.

Good gun if it's kept reasonably clean in my opinion. Mine has a tendency to jam when shooting a bunch of clay (at around the 200 round mark), but it's not an issue hunting of course.

You could well be right Jackpine, but I just thought the magnum receiver guns were all already paired with the barrel that allowed 3" so this would for sure not be it. I didn't know they made any magnum recievers and then put a 2 3/4" only barrel is all...doesn't make much sense!

Holy Hanna, do not even think about shooting the 3-1/2 out of any gun not designed for them.

The chamber pressure on the 3-1/2 is twice the 3 inch guns.

You would destroy the reciever at best and might even blow up your self with it.

Now you might be able to shoot the 3 inch shells if you have a magnum reciever.But you have to mill out the ejection port on the front side a little to clear the 1/4 inch longer empty.

I seen a Super X 1 done that way, but it jammed very often and never really did work right.

As some one else said as well, the stroke of the action is to short for the 3-1/2 and it may well be to short for the 3 inch too.

Your better off just buying a 3inch gun or one of the less expensive 3-1/2 semis out there now.

You can get a Charles Daily,Mossberg,Franchi,and a Spartin for around $400 or less in 3-1/2 and have a reliable gun that will handle the hotter rounds of the 3-1/2 loads.

We have the 1100 2 3/4". I wouldn't get too worked up about 3". I have guns that shoot the 3 and 3 1/2" but keep going back to the 1100 as I'm comfortable with it. I've never noticed a big difference in game I drop in comparison to the guys I hunt with that shoot 3" and 3 1/2". I think if you shoot within the range you should shoot in, 2 3/4 does the job just fine. Cheaper shells also.

Check out Cartriges of the World by Frank Barnes and read the chapter on lead vs. steel and how shot shells are designed that the size is irrevalent to power. It is a good eye opener, I also kill just as many geese with my 2 3/4 as others with 3 1/2.
