KellyP mentioned on one of the other posts about a morning crappie bite and I just wanted to ask other fisherman what there experience has been on catching crappies during the day. I've been up to Red 7-8 times over the last 5 years and we've never really caught many between 9 AM and 3 PM. And yes, we're not just drinking beer during the day, we're watching our Vex, trying different hooks, etc but never had much luck during the day. Whats your experience? If you're out searching, drilling holes and catch a crappie or two, is that a good spot to setup for the evening bite? Do you use a different bait or rig during the day vrs what you use during the evening bite?

Last year was no winter bites in two trips. The year before was a jackpot before noon away from the road and crowds with a slower evening bite in the same spot. The fastest action has always been during the day.

Last year we picked up full limits during those hours on most all of our trips. It was all about having a hot spot though, and moving around to find it.

We also caught fish all day and evening last year. Part of the time in one of kelly's houses.

I was there between Christmas and New Years. The bite was strictly daytime. We didn't even mark any fish once the sun went down. We would get out there right at sunrise and about every two hours we would catch a few crappies. The perch and walleyes and occasional jack filled in. I thought it was a extremely slow bite but found we were fortunate to catch what we did from speaking with others.

Two of us were out out WW for two nights over new years last year and we got about 12 fish a night and nothing but crappies and perch during the day. We did not move at all though...

I've never caught any in the day... always get into these craps after 4 in the afternoon.

I have caught crappies at all different times on Red Lake. One day caught 20 crppies in less than an 1 hour filling out my partner and myself. Hit the lake about 8 am and was off by 9:30 all filled out. Usually I do my best right at dark for about a hour afterwards than its a waiting game picking a few here and there. I usually want to be settle in some spot right at dark for the bite. Like day fishing for moving around locating them. But like I said if you find the school you can be filled out in no time at all anytime of day or evening. Biggest thing is being mobil is all. Sleepers are nice for a base station but bring your portables along for the best fishing and don't be afraid to move often. Getting away from the crowd is also a plus. crazy.gif

Last year right after Christmas 4 buddies and I caught crappies from 12pm straight until midnight when we went to bed and the next morning from 630 until noon. Oh, we also never had to move once. It was crazy! I have been to URL 10 times and never caught so many fish.

I've had better day bites from january into mid february and then it seems to have switched to a night bite. On all my march trips I've always done well through the night.

We went up in late February last year and fished the evening on Friday and all day Saturday. Three of us got two crappies Friday night and the rest of our limit on Saturday from about noon to 4 PM.

They weren't biting fast and furious, but we'd see the school come through on the Marcum and pick up 3-4 pretty quick and then have to wait another half hour for them to come through again. I'm not sure if they were swimming in a big circle or what, but it was like clock work.

The funny part is, of the 30 fish we caught I'd say 23 of them were on one pole. We duplicated the set up on all the rods, but this particular rod caught the majority of the fish.

I'm not sure if it had anything to do with it or not, but the spot we were fishing seemed to have a really muddy bottom. The water was really dirty when we drilled holes.

We're going up again this Feb., hope to have the same results.

There’s critters out and about.  Get yourself some cellular trail cams and you’ll see.

It wouldn't be the first time I've heard the USS Skunked Again breaking ice! I left this morning, the rain really did a number to the ice. I'll bet the Partridge River will be open by the weekend.

My yard is pretty open, but narrow. I think I'll be fine with reception in the areas I'm thinking. I try to keep the hill somewhat natural, but my wife wants to see the lake better. The video's I've watched, they have topped the trees and mounted the dish. I would this the swaying would affect the signal. Does Starlink help you with using WiFi for calling? My T-Mobile service sux at the cabin. Did you bury your cable?

I'm on the wide part of the channel going in to Black Bay. We won't see Paul B. For years.

Welcome back. Wow it's been since 2018 it looks like. Did you ever "I'm tightening up my footprint and want to build on my Bozeman lot on the Gallatin"?  😏

You're probably right. This isn't official since I've already lost, but I'll make my supplemental guess for May 6th since it's still open. 😄   As long as I can snake my way along the shore and/or plow through some dark ice on the 8th, I'll be happy. I love aluminum boats!

For all of my "problems" with getting a clear signal it's worth it. I can spend more time at the lake because I can work during the day and play or get things done at night. Toss in that I can record and watch a football/hockey/basketball game when I'm done at the end of the day....priceless.   Like your place, our property is more natural and I was worried about having to cut down a bunch of trees. I like that people have to get up close to see our place from the lake through the trees. Luckily I didn't have to do much to get enough a signal that works for me. If I needed to be on video calls, I probably would run the dish down to the shore to get a better view of the sky.   BTW - the main problem with mounting the dish on a tree is that the tree still has a canopy that will block the signal. The best option would be to top a tree and then mount it on the clear-cut top.
