Trout opener ice conditions

Was wondering how the ice is looking in general around the grand marais area for this weekends opener? How much snow is on the ground? Heard from the plow guy up there that there is ~6" in grand marais and a foot and a half in the woods or so? is this accurate?

The "plow guy" is fairly accurate. Ice on the smaller lakes is fine depth wise, you will find it slushy in spots. The larger lakes are a different story. The ice isn't very thick on the deeper lakes.

Although we haven't gone above freezing during the last couple of warm spells we have got below zero either.

Well the trout opener was once again a success. Plan 'A' fell through after all 3 snomobiles got stuck trying to get to the first lake. So we went with plan 'B' and found a few other groups there. Fished till dark and brought home 9 decent splake for the 4 of us. Sunday we decided to try another deep woods lake, again sleds stuck and we had to turn around. Plan 'C' ended up being a good choice, kept 2 nice lakers and 3 beautiful rainbows.....lots of slush on the lakes....cant wait to try it again!!!

You can definitely get yourself in for some work when your up in that country, but in my limited experience it usually pays off. There's just something about busting your a$$ for beautiful, feisty and delicious fish that makes it all worthwhile at the end of the day.
