Has anyone been out on buffalo for eyes lately. Never fished buffalo for walleyes. Is it a good lake for eyes and does anyone have any tips.

Thanks, Jerry

Fished Buffalo on Saturday night for about 3 hours. The bite was very light, but we magaged about 10 crappies with the largest being about 13 inches.

We were using very small hooks and crappie minnows. We were also using Ice Buster bobbers and had them pinched off to about 3/4 of an inch and the fish were barely pulling them under. Had one rod rigged with a spring bobber which helped.

Fished in about 15' of water. The fish were right on the bottom.

Buffalo has slowed so much, a snail could cross the lake before you would get a walleye.

Crappies are biting a little fast than the snail but you have to be at the right spot at the right time or forget it.

Saturday three of us fished 20 fow from 3-5:30. 30 crappies 10-12.5" and three 8.5" bluegills. Probably threw 10-12 smaller crappies back. Caught three fish on bobbers, all the rest had to be jigged and worked up about 2-3' before the tip of your rod would barely move, we would lift it a little farther, feel weight and set the hook. All but those three on bobbers were caught on a wax worm on a small glow demon demon white in color and a liitle purple on the tip. Very light biters and without the vexilar we probably would have only had the three bobber fish.

Any recent news out of Buffalo? Crappies still hitting???

I was out early this morning, done great, had 9 crappies in 45min. that i kept. I threw back another 10-20. I was on the lake at 3am fishing in 8ft of water. I also see nobody fishing the shallows. I was maybe 200ft from shallow at the most.

Drove by the lake on #35 about 12:30 today and there were 2 bald eagles sitting on the ice just west of the group of houses in front of the courthouse. Was cool to see. I suspect they were eating minnows or fish left on the ice.

Hey Jim, are they still biting as light as they have been, and what were you fishing with if you dont mind sharing?

The crappies bit really lite but would sometimes just pull it down. I was using tiny minnows, that I sort myself adding Gulp bait also helps.

Jim, if you could, can you elaborate on the shallow water thing a bit? Are you talking large shallow flat areas or near breakline spots that are set up close to deep water? I have never fished buffalo in water shallower than 12 feet and would like to know more about the shallow bite. Do you find the fish to run bigger in the shallows as well? Last time I fished Buffalo, the fish out in 19-20 FOW seemed to run a lot smaller than usual. I wonder if the average size is getting smaller out there??? confused.gif

Jiggin, I have fished all around buffalo lake. I also noticed over 1000 people are looking for the easy spots. I have done al the leg work to support my guide service. I will say some very large crappies are come from the deep water. These crappies are in the 2lb. class but your not catch many. As they are suppended fish and move a let. You will have your work cut out to stay on these fish. But clue to my spot is it's on the north shore. Good luck.

Jim, thanks for the feedback. Just to let you know, I was not trying to pry too much for actual spots, just wanted to know more about the shallows in particular. As I said, the game I play out on Buffalo is one of working the mid-depths and I try like hell to stay away from the crowds myself. Just don't like a lot of company, noise and the trash that everyone on that lake seems to like to throw around. I like to set up on structure such as an inside turn or a large flat area not far from shallow structure. I respect that you are fishing as a guide and have clients to keep up on the fish. My question to you is more of what TYPE of area and not what specific area you fish to find the big ones. I have plenty of my own secrets to keep and don't expect anyone else to give up theirs. Peace and good fishing to you! smile.gif

There’s critters out and about.  Get yourself some cellular trail cams and you’ll see.

It wouldn't be the first time I've heard the USS Skunked Again breaking ice! I left this morning, the rain really did a number to the ice. I'll bet the Partridge River will be open by the weekend.

My yard is pretty open, but narrow. I think I'll be fine with reception in the areas I'm thinking. I try to keep the hill somewhat natural, but my wife wants to see the lake better. The video's I've watched, they have topped the trees and mounted the dish. I would this the swaying would affect the signal. Does Starlink help you with using WiFi for calling? My T-Mobile service sux at the cabin. Did you bury your cable?

I'm on the wide part of the channel going in to Black Bay. We won't see Paul B. For years.

Welcome back. Wow it's been since 2018 it looks like. Did you ever "I'm tightening up my footprint and want to build on my Bozeman lot on the Gallatin"?  😏

You're probably right. This isn't official since I've already lost, but I'll make my supplemental guess for May 6th since it's still open. 😄   As long as I can snake my way along the shore and/or plow through some dark ice on the 8th, I'll be happy. I love aluminum boats!

For all of my "problems" with getting a clear signal it's worth it. I can spend more time at the lake because I can work during the day and play or get things done at night. Toss in that I can record and watch a football/hockey/basketball game when I'm done at the end of the day....priceless.   Like your place, our property is more natural and I was worried about having to cut down a bunch of trees. I like that people have to get up close to see our place from the lake through the trees. Luckily I didn't have to do much to get enough a signal that works for me. If I needed to be on video calls, I probably would run the dish down to the shore to get a better view of the sky.   BTW - the main problem with mounting the dish on a tree is that the tree still has a canopy that will block the signal. The best option would be to top a tree and then mount it on the clear-cut top.
