i go to gustavus and love to catch walleyes, i know there are walleyes in madison and i was wondering if some on could steer me in the right direction. i dont need where on the lake just general water depth and baits of chose. up north its easy, 14 to 26 with a spoon and minnow head or a silver Jigging rap, i have had no success with either bait down here??? is it just me or am i missing something about these southern lakes, also is there no day bite walleyes down here??

Perch or fire tiger jigging raps work best on most local lakes as perch are the most common forage. Depths will vary with temp and sunlight. The norm would be 24 to 30 fow. Madison has shad as a natural forage so silver or white should work fine. Later ice, fatheads seem to work well also.

Check the dnr website for a lake map and check out the narrows. You can always find a few walleyes around the narrows although this year might be rough becuase, at least in my opinion, it seems the forage was pretty thick this fall and the fish are pretty well fed without our lame lures danglin in their faces. Check any of the points too. I would also look for mud bottom....you can tell this by using your vexilar. If the bottom bar extends for several feet past it means soft bottom, if its a short bar it means hard bottom. Thats about all I can tell ya.

The 'eyes in Madison this past year have been well fed to say the least. The shad population out there was crazy. I would "tackle down" and use plain, glow hooks and slip bobbers. Hook the minnow right in the center of the top of the back so the minnow really struggles. This will closely imitate a dying shad as it plummets to the bottom.

thanks for the help, in your guys opinion do you think that washington is a better option for 'eyes?

Washington, German, Jefferson, Tetonka, Gorman, Elsyian, Frances, Rays, Madison, and a host of others all have their moments. But, in my humble opinion, if I was forced to choose, you'd find me on Madison. smirk.gif

I would pick Washington, but then I cant catch anything on Madison.

Good luck here I've found the fish but they are well fed to say the least. Untill this lake gets a good shad kill again you will just have to just get lucky.

There’s critters out and about.  Get yourself some cellular trail cams and you’ll see.

It wouldn't be the first time I've heard the USS Skunked Again breaking ice! I left this morning, the rain really did a number to the ice. I'll bet the Partridge River will be open by the weekend.

My yard is pretty open, but narrow. I think I'll be fine with reception in the areas I'm thinking. I try to keep the hill somewhat natural, but my wife wants to see the lake better. The video's I've watched, they have topped the trees and mounted the dish. I would this the swaying would affect the signal. Does Starlink help you with using WiFi for calling? My T-Mobile service sux at the cabin. Did you bury your cable?

I'm on the wide part of the channel going in to Black Bay. We won't see Paul B. For years.

Welcome back. Wow it's been since 2018 it looks like. Did you ever "I'm tightening up my footprint and want to build on my Bozeman lot on the Gallatin"?  😏

You're probably right. This isn't official since I've already lost, but I'll make my supplemental guess for May 6th since it's still open. 😄   As long as I can snake my way along the shore and/or plow through some dark ice on the 8th, I'll be happy. I love aluminum boats!

For all of my "problems" with getting a clear signal it's worth it. I can spend more time at the lake because I can work during the day and play or get things done at night. Toss in that I can record and watch a football/hockey/basketball game when I'm done at the end of the day....priceless.   Like your place, our property is more natural and I was worried about having to cut down a bunch of trees. I like that people have to get up close to see our place from the lake through the trees. Luckily I didn't have to do much to get enough a signal that works for me. If I needed to be on video calls, I probably would run the dish down to the shore to get a better view of the sky.   BTW - the main problem with mounting the dish on a tree is that the tree still has a canopy that will block the signal. The best option would be to top a tree and then mount it on the clear-cut top.
