OK here's my report/story from this past weekend.

First off, this was my first weekend EVER spending the night on Upper Red Lake.

I stopped in at Rogers and talked to Jerry and Joani before heading out. I drove out about 2 miles, turned off the right side of the road, careful not to hit any deep snow. Well, guess what? I didn't find any deep snow, but I did manage to find A thin layer of ice with about a foot of water under it, before the main sheet of ice. Yah, I go through. I give it the onion and my truck makes it out, but my house isn't so lucky. The axle gets caught on the ice and won't budge!

I try to get it out with no success. After a few minutes a couple guys come over to try and help. They hook up to my truck and start trying to pull me out, but that doesn't work either, so they decide to start "Snapping" the chain. We slowly start moving and then "boom"! My reciever hitch breaks clean off. (It's The smaller One, I have a Ranger) So now, not only is my trailer still stuck, but now I can't pull it with my truck! Believe it or not, I actually stayed calm, normally I would have flipped out! Anyway's I called Roger's and they sent the guy out from Caribou Trail Guide

Service and another guy to help me out. After a little work my house was free and he pulled it to a "better" location for me. He took my ball off the broken peice, so I could just put it in the bumper and atleast get my house back to shore. So now that all of that is over with I was finally able to start fishing by about 4:00pm.

I drop a Forage Minnow Spoon down and right away get a nice perch just over 10" inches that goes in the bucket. Over a couple more hours I end up catching a few Walleye with one just shy of 26" inches. At 6:58pm I catch A Crappie measuring 13" inches, then miss a fish on my other rod. I fished up till about midnight catching only a few more Walleye, then decided to call it a night.

Woke up at about 7:30am and dropped my lines back down. Caught two more Perch just over 10" inches right off the bat. So now I have 3-Perch and 1-Crappie. Not great, but atleast it's a meal for me. I fished till about 10am and decided to pack up and head for home.

All-In-All it was nice to be out fishing. I probably should have took my portable and moved around some, but I was so darn comfy sitting in my ice house, I decided not to. grin.gif

Next time I'll get out and search a little more. Hopefuly the fishing will pick up, it was still definetly slow fishing for Upper Red Lake. That goes for Walleye, Perch and Crappie.

CatManLee-

You had to have been right out next to me on the ice. I think I'm a tad further out than 2 miles though. I would've stopped by if I'd a known you were up.

I was located just to the south and a little east of the Caribou Trail Guide Camp on the Ice. About a 2 minute drive. How far were you from there?

By the way when you are up, What Radio Channel are you usually on, if any? Next time I'm up I'll check and see if your out.

Chris,

I hear you'll be up on url with Joel on the weekend of Feb 17-19. I'll be up there with a group as well. Let's plan to meet up on the ice somewhere.

When I was deer hunting last fall, the obvious explosion of wildlife then was evident then too.  I saw over 50 deer, 20+ turkeys, and too many pheasants to count in a week.  Nothing has changed.  These mild fake winters have to be playing a big role in survival.  And if we get another good reproductive cycle in June, I would expect another booming fall season.

Ya, 120.00 sux. I have Access Broadband, they just raised their rate from 50.00 to 75.00. I'm lucky to get 3 to 5 mbts up or down, sometimes I'll get better. In fairness to them, they have been great trying to respond to my needs, but just can't improve my service. They said that they doubt I'll ever be able to stream a Wild game. I just purchased a new streaming box and it buffers none stop. With the new streaming box and the referral discount, I'll be able to cancel Sling, so, I'll save about 10.00 on my monthly bill. That's what I told my wife 😀 it's true...

That's a better price than when I bought a few years ago. I pulled the giant box across the ice on an old Radio Flyer sled late winter.   Good luck. You'll enjoy Starlink, except for paying the bill. Mine was originally $100/mo, then $110/mo, then they said I was in a low usage area so they dropped my bill to $90/mo for the last two years. I just got a letter a month or so ago saying that we are now in a "high usage" area so they raised it to $120/mo.

I did the app thing. The best place is the middle of my yard and that's not going to happen. I have a tripod stand and a "J" type stand. I've also looked at trimming some trees for a better view of the sky. Once I get it, I'll have to try different areas. Maybe I'll have to hire a guy to climb my tree and install it- I've seen YouTube videos on that. Middle of my roof looks to be somewhat clear, but I don't like to put holes in the shingles. Plus, it's a 12/12 pitch and I don't have Velcro shoes. If anyone is looking to buy Starlink, it's on sale till 4/30 at $159.00. If you do buy it, I can give to a referral code and we'll both get a free month.

With the current conditions and weather forecast I would still stick to Sunday, May 4th.  I almost guarantee Vermilion will be ice-free by the opener on May 10th.  Very likely someone on the list will have the correct date.

Black Bay began opening yesterday afternoon. I could see ice moving around in the middle.

I've got it too. It works great if you can get a clear view of the sky, works decent if there are blockages. I had to take down two trees and still have branches that reach out and interrupt.   Some people have their dish mounted on shore which probably helps a lot. You can download the Starlink app and then walk around your property. It will assess any spot to see if you'll get enough coverage.

I've seen them at the Cub in Minnetonka and just a few weeks ago, the Cub in Chanhassen. The little smelt, smaller than sardines.
