One thing I've noticed through the years is that when the bite is slow people are friendlier. There is less crowding and way less litter. What do you all think; Is it because everyone is in the same boat? OR is it because the ones that only come to fill their bucket aren't here leaving the ones that truely love fishing as 90% of the people on the lake. What do you think?

I think it's both, people that come up only to catch fish, will find that the sport is about fishing, not catching, and part of fishing is shooting the $#!^ (couldn't find a T key, lol) with your neighbors. I'm very socialable on the ice, and particularly loved the fact last year, that at Red, you can always find a guy to talk to on the short range radios! Fishing's a social sport, that's one of the reasons I love it.

I think you have it nailed, we were there last fr,sat, sun.

didnt do well on the crappies but we didn't care, had a rental house heater poop out at 2am we didn't care. we came equipped to drill a 100 holes a day and fish in any temp if we chose to. but we just decided lets enjoy what we can catch today. we did like everybody else and spent each day tying different secret weapons on our crappie rods grin.gif but keeping a sharp eye on our tip-ups, and that provided more excitement since I can remember, some big fish came through the hole and some much bigger did not and all were photo'ed and released. yea we wanted crappies but we had a great time and I'm sure there will be a few more times when we don't get any, but at least we get to go fishi'n .

Little of both. If the fishing is slow might as well go see what the nieghbor is doing or just hang out and enjoy the day. That and the ones that go fishing when they know the bite is slow are going fishing just to go fishing. They are not worried about filling buckets or catching the next state record. They are just out fishing to enjoy and pay their respects the outdoors and maybe get the kids out of the house.

Now enter your numbers guy. They have managed to chisel out a day and a half to drive to and from the lake and catch two limits of crappies. They leave home chomping at the bit to get to the lake so they can begin the nonstop action, it eats at them as they push harder and harder for the lake. By the time they get to the ice they can't stand it! They have to get out to "the spot"...NOW, and help the poor fella that might be in "the spot". They don't have time to find another spot! OH the glory and the fame of leaving "the spot" with a bucket full of crappies to show the buddies back home. Mind you not they ticked off the mom and dad next to them and ruined the trip for the youngsters that came out with their father so they could sit on a bucket with dad and enjoy the day on the ice.

I don't have time for guys that try to get pushy and elbow in on poeple because they may be getting fish, and I really have no respect for poeple that leave trash on the ice. What did the lake ever do to you other then give you a place to enjoy yourself and the outdoors? It is sad that the grumpy ones will never truly know what it is all about.

Now the crowd that is on Red currently is one freindly bunch poeple. Everybody waves and nobody seems to be in any big hurry or bent on filling out. I would love to have anybody from that group come fish next to me, heck I'll drill your holes for ya.

What about all the "Friendly" people at Westwind saturday????? wink.gif Waldo sayed he was going to change his place from a resort that caters to fishermen to a boxing arena. I even heard Cookie offered to part them on the ice with his V-plow!!! Only in Waskish!!!

I think I missed the worst of it Sat. night confused.gif I think by the time it got ugly I was home trying to get that birch tree out of my parking spot. I'm glad I'll never turn 50 again. That was one nasty BD party.

Being an "out-of-stater," I'd have to say that the folks on Upper Red are some of the most helpful, friendly, happy-go-lucky people I've met. Around here it seems that many ice fishermen have their little cliques, are grumpy half the time and are "secretive" about their fishing spots or baits. Don't get me wrong, there are some nice people out on the ice too, but it just seems as though most are tight-lipped. Our forums for our area are useless...more like bragging boards. Our experience with URL people was top-notch. Helpful, cheery people willing to offer info. Heck, last year the people in the sleeper house next to ours gave every possible detail as to what to use & how to present it so that we would do as well as they did with the crappies. URL impressed us A LOT. (That's why we're headed back March 1st...which feels like and eternity right now!! frown.gif ) Despite some of the doubt I've been reading, it's a superior fishery that seems to be managed very well by some very caring individuals! All you people who spend your winters keeping up the roads and trying to keep the houses on fish get a thumbs up from me! laugh.gif

Well Kelly... Here's to blowing your 'friendly people' theory all to h*ll... I'm showing up this weekend! There goes the neighborhood!!!!! Better plant another birch! hehehehe... Or you can just use the side of your garage!!!! grin.gif I'll call you and fore warn you on which days you should go into seclusion..... wink.gif Heck, we may even get our houses out!

Good Luck!

Westwind Sat. was definately an eventful way to part from Red. I seen what you'all are talking about.

I'm sorry, curiosity has gotten the best of me now, but I gotta ask what happened... atleast a couple of details.

Posted

Must have happened after I left.

We were there to about 8:30pm or so.

It was two main events, one was in the afternoon and last, happened around closing time. I was wise like Kelly, I stayed at the cabin and kept a log on the fire with a Velvet-7 in one hand and a remote control in the other. Turning 40 was the best thing to ever happen to me!!! wink.gif

Westwind after bar close at least 8 different people tried to fight. I only saw 1 fight actually take place. But was broken up just as fast as started

I remember hitting the floor one night at Westwind while talking to Kelly. Near as I can tell he didn't throw a punch but he did help me up so we could keep the conversation going at eye-level. I never did figure out what happened to my legs that night. Must have been the wind.

Ya, 120.00 sux. I have Access Broadband, they just raised their rate from 50.00 to 75.00. I'm lucky to get 3 to 5 mbts up or down, sometimes I'll get better. In fairness to them, they have been great trying to respond to my needs, but just can't improve my service. They said that they doubt I'll ever be able to stream a Wild game. I just purchased a new streaming box and it buffers none stop. With the new streaming box and the referral discount, I'll be able to cancel Sling, so, I'll save about 10.00 on my monthly bill. That's what I told my wife 😀 it's true...

That's a better price than when I bought a few years ago. I pulled the giant box across the ice on an old Radio Flyer sled late winter.   Good luck. You'll enjoy Starlink, except for paying the bill. Mine was originally $100/mo, then $110/mo, then they said I was in a low usage area so they dropped my bill to $90/mo for the last two years. I just got a letter a month or so ago saying that we are now in a "high usage" area so they raised it to $120/mo.

I did the app thing. The best place is the middle of my yard and that's not going to happen. I have a tripod stand and a "J" type stand. I've also looked at trimming some trees for a better view of the sky. Once I get it, I'll have to try different areas. Maybe I'll have to hire a guy to climb my tree and install it- I've seen YouTube videos on that. Middle of my roof looks to be somewhat clear, but I don't like to put holes in the shingles. Plus, it's a 12/12 pitch and I don't have Velcro shoes. If anyone is looking to buy Starlink, it's on sale till 4/30 at $159.00. If you do buy it, I can give to a referral code and we'll both get a free month.

With the current conditions and weather forecast I would still stick to Sunday, May 4th.  I almost guarantee Vermilion will be ice-free by the opener on May 10th.  Very likely someone on the list will have the correct date.

Black Bay began opening yesterday afternoon. I could see ice moving around in the middle.

I've got it too. It works great if you can get a clear view of the sky, works decent if there are blockages. I had to take down two trees and still have branches that reach out and interrupt.   Some people have their dish mounted on shore which probably helps a lot. You can download the Starlink app and then walk around your property. It will assess any spot to see if you'll get enough coverage.

I've seen them at the Cub in Minnetonka and just a few weeks ago, the Cub in Chanhassen. The little smelt, smaller than sardines.
