LX-5 Questions

Question

Posted

I just recently purchased an LX-5 and have used it a fair amount so far and really like it with the exception of no reading in the 20 foot range from 18'-20'. I know there has been alot of talk about this issue and I'm not trying to start any issues but is there anyone that has not had this problem. Also just to clarify I did set up my FL-18 right next to it and could read all the way down to 20' with no problems. I am wondering if anybody knows if Marcum has said anything about this problem or if it is a minor inconvenience a person will have to live with. Thanks for the comments.

I have been fishing with MarCum units from the get go and was fishing in 38' of water over the weekend and caught just a hair of bottom in the 40' scale and bumped it up to 80' setting to get a little more bottom content and still slammed the perch. It's something I'm used to and do not consider it to be a problem.

So how do you like the contrasts in display sharpness with your LX-5 compared to the FL-18. Try the NBT, SFL with Zoom in deep water it's amazing how crisp, sharp and accurate it is and what I really love is how fantastic it is in shallow water heavy weeds. It's the most incredible unit I have ever used!

I have the same problem. I just lower my transducer down a bit further so it reads the bottom. I have to call Marcum to see if they are going to fix the issue.

I like the unit otherwise.

Same problem here too. It's annoying. This should defintely be fixed. I don't like going to the next scale up.

I used mine for the first time this weekened. I played with the Zoom feature in 28 FOW and it worked but I had to turn the gain all the way up. Anyone else notice this? Maybe it normal?

First in reply to Tim I do really like the cripness of the display and the sensitivity of the unit compared to the FL-18. I agree it is much more precise in shallow water with soft bottom and weeds. Back to the main question thought is that this past weekend I fished with my LX-5 and Vexilar FL-18 side by side in 19' (Transducer level and just below bottom of ice) and my FL-18 performed just fine in the 20' scale where as my LX-5 would not read anything until I switched to the 40' scale. It really isn't a big issue but it frustrates me that when I email Marcums customer service department they tell me to go exchange it and when I call the customer service department they cannot give me an expanation or they tell me a technician can but it's probably more than I wan't to hear. They also will tell me that this is common with all other flasher units and to just switch to the next scale or move my transducer down. I know this would all work but I would just like an explanation of why it won't read in this depth range and if they are going to attempt to fix it. If anyone has some answers or suggestions on who to speak with please let me know.

I don't know what to tell you other than I probably could have told the masses when I did my first comparison of the LX-3 and FL-18 but I considered it to be a non-issue. I know I don't want MarCum to touch anything on the inside of the LX-5 but I do wonder if it could be done by replacing the depth stickers on the unit to correctly reflect the depth it would be pretty easy to just change the depth scale sticker to reflect this I would think.

I would email a suggestion to MarCum Customer service about this. There engineers listen closely to the customer, we made suggestions the first year about the restrictions in the soft pack opening on the LX-3 and my LX-5 has the deeper opening so that we can see the full screen quite easily, give it a shot...

Ya, 120.00 sux. I have Access Broadband, they just raised their rate from 50.00 to 75.00. I'm lucky to get 3 to 5 mbts up or down, sometimes I'll get better. In fairness to them, they have been great trying to respond to my needs, but just can't improve my service. They said that they doubt I'll ever be able to stream a Wild game. I just purchased a new streaming box and it buffers none stop. With the new streaming box and the referral discount, I'll be able to cancel Sling, so, I'll save about 10.00 on my monthly bill. That's what I told my wife 😀 it's true...

That's a better price than when I bought a few years ago. I pulled the giant box across the ice on an old Radio Flyer sled late winter.   Good luck. You'll enjoy Starlink, except for paying the bill. Mine was originally $100/mo, then $110/mo, then they said I was in a low usage area so they dropped my bill to $90/mo for the last two years. I just got a letter a month or so ago saying that we are now in a "high usage" area so they raised it to $120/mo.

I did the app thing. The best place is the middle of my yard and that's not going to happen. I have a tripod stand and a "J" type stand. I've also looked at trimming some trees for a better view of the sky. Once I get it, I'll have to try different areas. Maybe I'll have to hire a guy to climb my tree and install it- I've seen YouTube videos on that. Middle of my roof looks to be somewhat clear, but I don't like to put holes in the shingles. Plus, it's a 12/12 pitch and I don't have Velcro shoes. If anyone is looking to buy Starlink, it's on sale till 4/30 at $159.00. If you do buy it, I can give to a referral code and we'll both get a free month.

With the current conditions and weather forecast I would still stick to Sunday, May 4th.  I almost guarantee Vermilion will be ice-free by the opener on May 10th.  Very likely someone on the list will have the correct date.

Black Bay began opening yesterday afternoon. I could see ice moving around in the middle.

I've got it too. It works great if you can get a clear view of the sky, works decent if there are blockages. I had to take down two trees and still have branches that reach out and interrupt.   Some people have their dish mounted on shore which probably helps a lot. You can download the Starlink app and then walk around your property. It will assess any spot to see if you'll get enough coverage.

I've seen them at the Cub in Minnetonka and just a few weeks ago, the Cub in Chanhassen. The little smelt, smaller than sardines.
