I Finally Got One!!

mattadam3rs.jpg

Matt & Adam holding my lone crappie for the weekend.

My trip up to Upper Red Lake Jan. 6-8 had the same tone as my last few trips up, except this time, I caught a crappie.

The bite has been tough for many people, myself included, and is very humbling at times.

I brought 2 of my good friends up to the shack for the weekend. Adam has been to URL with me in the past and knows what this lake can be like. My other friend Matt is originally from Iowa, has ice fished extensively in the Spirit Lake/Okoboji area, but has never been to Upper Red or northern MN before ice fishing. I told Matt that he would have a blast no matter what happens just experiencing the URL experience and the "sleeper shack" lifestyle that goes along with it.

We arrived at the shack fairly late Friday night. The funny thing about late Friday night is Adam had the hot hole (Dan Thiem, you know what hole that was!) and had 7 or 8 bites that evening and missed or lost every single one of them. I only saw one of the fish he had on and it was a northern pike, approximately 7" long that was lost right at the top of the hole.

I roll out of bed fairly early Saturday morning, drop my line down the hole, and have a fat 17" walleye in the house not more than 2 minutes later! What a way to wake up, eh? Matt was completely amazed by that. Heck, I was too. grin.gif Nothing like setting the hook while you are still in you sleeping bag.

Later that afternoon, we headed around to Hillman's Rd to fish out of portables to try something new. We were approximately 4 1/2 miles out on the road and north and concentrated on that area for the sundown bite. We had a bunch of walleyes before the sun hit the horizon and then had a little lull in the action. About 6 o'clock, I had a fish come about 1-1/2' off the bottom and absolutely annihilate my Scenic Tackle Go-Devil tipped with a minnow head. And to my surpise... a crappie popped out of the hole!! Our one and only crappie for the trip and my 1st for the hardwater season up there.

Many of you have been talking about a light bite, and lots of lookers and I have to agree. For every 5 or 6 fish to come on my Marcum flasher, only 1 would hit. Thats why I thought this crappie was odd because it just hammered my spoon with no hesitation.

I would like to add that the ice road conditions on both Hillman's and Roger's roads are very good! However, take it slow on Hillman's Rd because there are some bumps out there that I never saw coming! I'm not sure how my auger stayed in the truck bed on that one series of drifts/bumps! grin.gif

Ice is still in the 16" range and varies greatly when you get off the road and start augering holes. It has been mentioned before, the clear ice is thicker and the snow covered (drifts) are much thinner. I didn't meausure ice thickness but I would guess variation in a small area to be between 14"-18" where we were fishing.

On a side note, the perch are going nuts and it wouldn't take too many to make a nice meal in the ice shack. Average size is running 9 1/2- 10 1/2 inches.

Good Luck Guys! Only a matter of time before they turn on. Like I said, lots of fish are looking (could be walleyes, could be crappies) but getting them to commit has been tough.

I know what you mean about those speed bumps on Hillman's road! laugh.gif

Sounds like you working the same general area we worked last weekend with about the same results.

Hanson, I fished hard on friday and had a similar experience, the only difference is that I dropped the aqua-vu down there and saw that they were crappies. very finicky, and like you said one to every six would bite and when they did it was very light. We ended up with a few more fish than that, but still wasn't much better. Hopefully it'll kick here in a week or two.

good report Chris, thank you. Maybe not the results we all hope for, but sounds like you had a good time. We're going up on Wed night

Hanson,

Sorry I have to disagree with you, I see two crappies one in your hand and one on your fish house grin.gif

Ya, 120.00 sux. I have Access Broadband, they just raised their rate from 50.00 to 75.00. I'm lucky to get 3 to 5 mbts up or down, sometimes I'll get better. In fairness to them, they have been great trying to respond to my needs, but just can't improve my service. They said that they doubt I'll ever be able to stream a Wild game. I just purchased a new streaming box and it buffers none stop. With the new streaming box and the referral discount, I'll be able to cancel Sling, so, I'll save about 10.00 on my monthly bill. That's what I told my wife 😀 it's true...

That's a better price than when I bought a few years ago. I pulled the giant box across the ice on an old Radio Flyer sled late winter.   Good luck. You'll enjoy Starlink, except for paying the bill. Mine was originally $100/mo, then $110/mo, then they said I was in a low usage area so they dropped my bill to $90/mo for the last two years. I just got a letter a month or so ago saying that we are now in a "high usage" area so they raised it to $120/mo.

I did the app thing. The best place is the middle of my yard and that's not going to happen. I have a tripod stand and a "J" type stand. I've also looked at trimming some trees for a better view of the sky. Once I get it, I'll have to try different areas. Maybe I'll have to hire a guy to climb my tree and install it- I've seen YouTube videos on that. Middle of my roof looks to be somewhat clear, but I don't like to put holes in the shingles. Plus, it's a 12/12 pitch and I don't have Velcro shoes. If anyone is looking to buy Starlink, it's on sale till 4/30 at $159.00. If you do buy it, I can give to a referral code and we'll both get a free month.

With the current conditions and weather forecast I would still stick to Sunday, May 4th.  I almost guarantee Vermilion will be ice-free by the opener on May 10th.  Very likely someone on the list will have the correct date.

Black Bay began opening yesterday afternoon. I could see ice moving around in the middle.

I've got it too. It works great if you can get a clear view of the sky, works decent if there are blockages. I had to take down two trees and still have branches that reach out and interrupt.   Some people have their dish mounted on shore which probably helps a lot. You can download the Starlink app and then walk around your property. It will assess any spot to see if you'll get enough coverage.

I've seen them at the Cub in Minnetonka and just a few weeks ago, the Cub in Chanhassen. The little smelt, smaller than sardines.
