Will there be any good ice on Monday? I'm thinking of trying it for an hour or so after work. I'm off at 3pm.

Posted

The ice on Foster is 6+" in most areas with the best ice on the North side, and some weaker ice at the NW corner. Willow Creek is closer to 9+". The Boy Scout Camp is 6" in every hole I drilled.

Posted

I measured 9 inches at Lake Zumbro along the hi-banks. That was yesterday. Saturday Fosters had 6 1/2" to about 8 1/2". Depending on where.

Posted

Dan-

I've been by Zumbro a couple of times this winter and haven't seen anyone out. So I guess my question is about access; where is everyone going out from? Question two is: If person didn't have a flasher would it be worth the time? It sounds like the fish are suspended most of the time out there.

Hey Nick,

We've been getting accsess via private property. Although you could come in off the Ponderosa.

But it's a bit of a walk. Not bad now with no snow on the ice.

Where I've been the bluegills have been literaly inches off the bottom. Less than six inches up. Really no need for a flasher. I turned mine off after a while.

Maybe I'll stop at Fosters for a while after 3.

What's hot out there right now? Any specific colors, jigs or little spoons?

#12 Marmooska has taken well over 200 gills this weekend from my group. Tipped with a single waxie.

Posted

A Marmooska is what?

Posted

It's a small hook with a heavy jig head. The head itself is also small, but heavy. I have a few rigged up on a couple of poles in my bag. The nose tip glows also. Wally World has them.

Posted

It is a cross between a Martin, a Moose and a Haska (a rare mole type animal only found in the Zumbro river area) They usually show up right about first freeze and if you are lucky enough to catch a mating pair, they produce like mice. Other wise, they are pretty $$ at the local shops.

Wallmart South didn't have these the last time I was there. At least I couldn't find them. The "hat" of the jig glows in white and they are about $1.79 for a 2-pack. #12 is my preferred size for the Rochester reservoirs, but I'd scale up to at least a #10 on the Zumbro.

Fleet Farm and Gander both carry them but FF was out of the #12's and I just bought the last 3 packs (of #12s) from Gander a few days ago.

I am somewhat familiar with the zumbro, but I don't dexactly know where the highbanks area is, well I might I just don't know that it is called that. If I come in from ponderosa where am I looking to go? I am thinking about heading out this morning for a while. Thanks for any help

I hope I caught you before you left.

If you come in at the public ramp at Ponderosa make a right. Or you might want to try to come from Grandpa Ed's. Either way it's about a 1/2 mile walk. Stay on the right and you will eventualy run out of houses. The area just ahead of the trail that comes down out of the woods has been a good spot latley. Get in about 22-25 f.o.w. and you should be set. Just keep in mind these fish roam. Don't be afraid to pop a few holes in closer to shore either.

If you don't feel like walking, you could try the spot across from the supper club. It also has a steep drop off.

Good luck Scrod.

Holy cats! Half a stinkin' mile! Maybe one of these weekends my brother and I will have to take turns pulling his 2 man clam out there. We've never been there. I probably won't go without a flasher. My brother's (Steve Gorder) got one though. I've only been out without him and his flasher once. It would be good to broaden my horizons. I'm still pretty much a rookie. All I've done this year is buy stuff. Big Blue is slow now so I should get some ice time.

I'd love to CT but I can't send anything yet and this is the only computer I've got access to.

I am going out to the Zum in the morning. Want to tag along? I plan to leave at about 7 and get home around noonish, maybe one.

Thanks for the offer! I work from 7-3. No fishing for me on weekdays until after that, or Tuesdays(pool league). I'm very greatful for the offer. Definitely some other time!

Ron;

A Marmooska is a small two-colored jig shaped like a pea, and evidently catches fish like mad. Fleet Farm has them.

How did you two do yesterday morning?

I had a blast at work! smirk.gif

I had one of those days. Forgot the Marcum at home along with the spud bar. Only took the rod bag out on the ice and it was cold enough last night to cap the holes with about two inches of ice so kicking them out was not on the menu.

Eric showed up about the time I was getting testy and we poppped a couple holes and he commenced to work the "hot" one. We made a move about 9 and we found a mixed bag there with sunnies, white bass. The first spot gave up crappies, white bass and perch to him.

When I left he was heading back to the starting point to see if he could muster some more crappies.

I may try again in the morning, but will play that thought by ear. Had a good time even if the fish were not under my butt most of the time.

Thanks Eric for the time and the chatter....we'll get it done again sometime!

Posted

thanks Dan I didn't make it ot yesterday, but I am pretty sure I will give it a try tomorrow morning for a while!

Today was fun even though the fish werent biteing very hard but still nice to get out. After you left tom I managed 1 9.75" sunny I measured grin.gif, 7 small white bass, 2 shiners, and 1 18"catfish. I decide to leave around 1:30pm to get something to eat and went back out and was setup by 4pm and fished till 5:30pm then I had to go to work frown.gif but o'well. I did pick up 7 crappies in that hour but they were hitting so light. Kept nothing everthing swam to see another day. We'll have to give it another go sometime Tom.

Posted

Eric....

Today was good to me. The crappies and sunfish kept me busy not far from where the black portable was found on the high banks. The first spot we hi gave up only three catfish and a couple of smaller perch and a bunch of shiners.

Shiners were in schools there big time today. Some of these groups were four feet thick. Getting down thru them was a pain and then the catfish were hanging underneath. The fishing was frustrating there so I hit the high banks and got on better fish. Same holes we put in over there yesterday was where the fish were hottest, but the holes the black portable used gave up some nice sunfish too. 10 bells was the final hour though. After that the bite was real slow giving up a fish about every fifteen minutes and most of those were pretty small.

I might see you out there tomorrow.....weather will be the deciding factor.

Welcome back. Wow it's been since 2018 it looks like. Did you ever "I'm tightening up my footprint and want to build on my Bozeman lot on the Gallatin"?  😏

You're probably right. This isn't official since I've already lost, but I'll make my supplemental guess for May 6th since it's still open. 😄   As long as I can snake my way along the shore and/or plow through some dark ice on the 8th, I'll be happy. I love aluminum boats!

For all of my "problems" with getting a clear signal it's worth it. I can spend more time at the lake because I can work during the day and play or get things done at night. Toss in that I can record and watch a football/hockey/basketball game when I'm done at the end of the day....priceless.   Like your place, our property is more natural and I was worried about having to cut down a bunch of trees. I like that people have to get up close to see our place from the lake through the trees. Luckily I didn't have to do much to get enough a signal that works for me. If I needed to be on video calls, I probably would run the dish down to the shore to get a better view of the sky.   BTW - the main problem with mounting the dish on a tree is that the tree still has a canopy that will block the signal. The best option would be to top a tree and then mount it on the clear-cut top.

Not sure where on the lake you are located, but Paul Bunyan Communications will be extending fiber optic internet for most of the south shore of the lake in the next couple years. If you’re in Beatty township like me, unfortunately we have been snubbed from the expansion.

Our home, Casa De Miel, is in a quiet 1 street gated family neighborhood. With 3 bedrooms - 2 featuring en suite baths. The 3rd room with a beautiful new double queen bunkbed adjacent to the hallway half bath is perfect for kids. That bunkbed is made from the local protected Guanacaste wood, only dead harvested and available there, it is beautiful. All the wood and tile work is pretty cool - we couldn't afford those materials and workmanship here!!. The master has a spacious walk-in closet, and the bunkroom/office has an entire closet wall with safe. With the pool, internet, multiple big screens, an outdoor shower and lovely Casita with a roofed patio, it is perfect for multi-generational families, fishing expeditions, etc. Sleeping capacity is 8. Everything you need is there, and new, from beach and pool toys, PFDs, to quality kitchenware. Serving ware is patio safe, but the wine glasses are glass, so deploy the unbreakable stuff for the 3rd bottle or so. Our property managers are incredibly thoughtful and professional Americans, rated Superhosts on AirBNB. They check you in and are always available. The same crew thoroughly cleans and maintains the exterior landscaping after each visit, and are available additionally if you like for extended stays. Our property managers own their business and are the best - concierge level extra attention is easily arranged. The house is less than a mile to the closest town beach and about 2 miles to another beautiful beach featuring a fantastic beach restaurant. The fishing is great and as a flyfishing guide myself I can recommend thoroughly vetted captains to take you out with conventional tackle. There are kayak guides also. Shore fishing is great anywhere smart. Trout a couple hours uphill. There are local and top notch international grocery and retail stores. The famous 'Monkey Farm' (a unique recovery and animal rescue center with tours, beach horseback rides, etc.) is right there. Many excellent bars and restaurants. Moped and motorcycle, bike, golf cart, scooter and Ebike rentals are easy and about a half mile mile away towards the town center. Kayak, other water toys at the beaches. Surfing and surf lessons are available easily and depart from town beach, as well as whale watching and scenic coastline cruises - smart to research and if you choose, book ahead. We are a little over an hour to a beautiful National Park with hot springs, tours and zips lines, etc. The world famous Lake Arenal area with the volcano and hot springs is a little further, but a very easy day trip. Pricing is flexible but I had to put something in there, so I listed the average daily price. We prefer at least a 3 night rental. Pricing is dependent on your dates, and starts around $220/night - I can send a link with up to the minute pricing. Monthly and longer rentals offer significant discounts. The quiet season is beginning so it is a great time to visit! I have a rustic trout shack on the Madison, and drift rivers for smallies and muskies here in MN, WI, etc. It would be great to meet new fishing buddies through this rental. Maybe we can follow thru for some floats when our calendars line up, or otherwise share/swap resources or fishing opportunities! The property managers currently block out the calendar further than 6 months ahead. Any forum members can contact me and I will facilitate advance bookings. Feel free to email me if you have questions, here's the booking link. Thanks, Pura Vida - Vida de Tiron!

Well since I'm all over this state during the year. Your either not in Minnesota, or your on a Hugh chunk of private land backed up to a state park or wildlife refugee! 🤭

When I was deer hunting last fall, the obvious explosion of wildlife then was evident then too.  I saw over 50 deer, 20+ turkeys, and too many pheasants to count in a week.  Nothing has changed.  These mild fake winters have to be playing a big role in survival.  And if we get another good reproductive cycle in June, I would expect another booming fall season.
