I heard that a fish house fell through the ice on lake Marion yesterday (Saturday). Has anyone else heard that??? if so, I hope no one was inside at the time!!

idk about tht but i wouldnt wanna fish on marion. it said in the paper tht its polluted with mercury and fecal matter.

I wouldn't eat anything out of Ripley in Litchfield either...lots of fecal matter in there, too! I wish the state would step in and make the owners of these non-compliant septic systems clean up their act! mad.gif

I seen that on the hutch paper website too that marion, hook, crow river and its lakes our polluted. I think Marion gets it from the creek on the south side that goes into the buffalo river. Can you tell lakes that are bad by the color of water being green in the summer like hook and marion and the river being dark brown? The ice isnt the greatest and I could see houses falling in on marion and probably will on other lakes especially permanents around here.

ok guys enuf with all the worries and false info saying that houses are falling through! Im sorry but i have fished most these lakes some claim have such bad ice, within the last week. Nowhere and i mean nowhere have i found any ice that would not support a atv, permanent or even both together. So i guess if some are that worried so much that there not going on the ice well thats just better for the rest of! Less pressure! I for one will continue running my atv and sitting in the big house! I mean cmon the best part of our ice season is already past us, how much more time are ppl gunna spend complaining about the ice when a person could be out fishin. I would like to also clear up with the last post, but how does marion become polluted from water that is running outta the lake?? That creek has a 5 ft high concrete barrier that runs water out of marion into buffalo?? Cmon fella's think about it. Im not doubting that some lakes in our area are polluted, but what can be done about it? All of us who use these resources ban together and demand that something be done about it! My first option would be eliminate all those (Contact US Regarding This Word) tiles! U know the ones who totally destroyed all of our small pot-holes. Seems as if none of the old timers had this issue back in the day, did they? They also didnt have farmers tiles running water into our creeks, rivers or streams. Instead of keeping whatever water is polluted contained now they just run the problem down the water table and hope no one catches them! Sorry for the rant, guys this was not my intention, just thought i would see what everyone else had to say along with me.

Bend, certainly didn't want to offend you. I just wanted to confirm or deny the story I heard. If you want to go fishing, go right ahead. but with the weather we've had lately and my family at home that depends on me, it's not worth the risk. I don't doubt that most lakes are fishable. i certanly won't be taking my big house out soon, or even my 4 wheeler for that matter. the fact is and has always been that no ice is every completely safe. so, I don't think you need to belittle anyone that is erring on the side of caution to keep themselfs safe and their family complete, cuz like you said, you only benefit from it as a result of less fishing pressure.

Will God keep you safe with an F-150 on 2 inches of ice? You must have some strong ties to believe that c.r.a.p. Nothing wrong about believing in God, but geez, grow up.

As far as I know, the ice is getting better. However, I would not tell anyone to go out with their ATV and big house and I wouldn't trust anyone who told me so.

Use your own discretion!!! Each lake varies (alot).

Now easy there doc! I myself nor do i believe anyone else on this forum said anything yet about driving fullsize rust buckets onto the ice in the hutch area! Of course not! Cmon now i know that those fords rust fast and lose alot of weight of there Detroit steel but to think that an atv and a fullsize truck are anywhere near the same weight is alittle crazy rite. I know thats not what you were referring to is it? I know i wont be driving my own truck onto the ice around here for a few weeks yet from what the forecasts are predicting, but i will say that I aint scared to trek across the lakes with the atv. I mean commen sense says stay away from the currents, but why wont 8 inches hold up a atv! I know i have drove on less and wouldnt be afraid to haul granny out to the house on that either. Ok whos next with there 2 cents? grin.gif

Here's my $.02, I was on Marion on Sunday and walked from the public access all the way to around the point where the aerator is. I sure didn't see any places that appeared to have a house fall through although there was a house right up by the access. As far as ice conditions, I measured a solid 9 inches. It was good hard ice too because I had my hand auger with and had quite a lather worked up after drilling my two holes. When I walked off, there was a small car parked on the ice just off of the access. Quite a few slushy spots where wheelers and sleds had driven through. It's always spooky going over slush but there must be enough good ice underneath.

Just my personal observations-BTW I caught 2 perch and two hammerhandle pike. I was after walleye in a spot where my dad caught a 30" walleye a few years back.

Ive been on quite a few lakes in southern Mn and have not had any problem with 4-wheelin around. I have used my 4-wheeler for the last three weeks.I personally have not found a spot with less than 8 inches of clear ice other than one lake that had 6.5 inches.Yes,you need to be carefull but I see no reason to walk all over when the ice is good enough for a 4-wheeler.If some want to walk that is fine, but there is no reason to not 4-wheel carefully.Just my .02 cents.

Was out on Marion tonight. It was slow action -- well, not the slowest, but not the best either. One crappie went 12.5 inches though, so that was a treat for me. I don't catch many bigger than that. Anyway, as for the ice -- it was thicker than I thought it'd be. Almost a foot where I was. There were cars and trucks driving on it left and right. Surprised me at first, but throughout the night I guess I got used to it. I walked out, but I'd say there were at least 6 cars and 6 trucks out there. Prolly that many in the parking lot too. Just an FYI. I think it's a wee bit thin for trucks, but maybe if I had a geo metro I'd drive it out there. If it was more than that 1/4 mile. Pretty short walk to justify the risk of the truck goin through the ice.

Pop ups have increased for me for a while now.  Timed to cover my usual taps about the time I would tap.

So there is a boat on a friend's property, has been there for about 4 years, with no contact from owner, and she is unreachable. It was last registered in 2020. Is there any way for him to make it his, legally?

I'm getting a lot of popups adds. Just wondering if it's just my computer or is every one getting them?

Birds at home have been quiet and out of sight.  Not sure where they went.  Last year they wouldn’t respond to calls - until they did.  But that will be common until the girls quit being friendly.

I've seen about 60 turkeys in 1.5 days of hunting thus far.  Unfortunately they are not responding to calls or decoys and the only birds that have walked within range are hens.   It's just a waiting game now.  Deer hunting for turkeys, hoping a legal one walks past before I have to quit in a few days...

A bunch of webcams available these days to see progress as well:   https://lakevermilionresorts.com/webcams/   Looks to be pulling away from shore. I expect ice out between next Friday and Sunday based on temps in the forecast.  Some sun and then some wind would get it going quickly.

But wait Meg, there's more!   Anyway, do you like fishing?  Trolling's kind of fun!  🤭

Well lol, Google is your friend! 🤭     Yes, the 2012 movie "Loon Lake" was filmed in Minnesota. Specifically, it was shot in southwest Minnesota, with locations including Round Lake, Pioneer Village, and Jackson County. The film is also based on a local legend from southwest Minnesota about a witch who lived by Loon Lake.

Well indeed there is a movie and the trailer will help you near down the 25 lakes a lot by just checking into the Loon Lakes in Southwest, MN.  Should be easy now. Have fun.    Eager to escape the grief and nightmares of the city, Louis Olsen travels to Southwest Minnesota, seeking the peace of the rural countryside. When he accidentally disturbs the grave of a supposed local 'witch' Mary Jane Terlinden, what began as a peaceful reprieve unravels into a haunting nightmare from which Louis cannot escape - but is it all just in his head?

Great. That's usually a good sign for ice break-up.
