I was just sitting around thinking about all of the great lakes around P.R. and was wondering what your guys' favorite walleyes were. Mines is Long just east of P.R. hands down

East Crooked!

Big Sand is mine. I've never really fished Long for walleyes. Where are some decent spots on the lake? We'll have to have a outting out there this spring.

I also like east crooked. We have a place on the east end of the lake. We have a 5 acre lot with two campers sitting on it. This last year the walleyes were a little harder to get do to the surprising amount of smallmouth bass in the lake. We caught a ton of these fish with the largest being a 21" pig. Don't get me wrong these fish were a blast to catch but they made finding and catching walleyes a little harder.MinDak Hunter do you have a place on the lake? You've maybe seen me outthere. I have a green lund pro angler with a 50hp. yamaha tiller. Maybe this summer we can get together and share some storys and catch a few fish.

I'm new on this site and noticed that a couple of guys noted east crooked. I've got a cabin on there and i was just wondering if any one has any tricks that have worked for them on it cause i've fished every spot and just don't have much luck.

Hey Dudes,

I hav'nt fished many lake in the area for Walleyes. I'm

just to busy chasing muskies around on Mantrap. So my favorite walleye lake is Potato. I would be interested in

some advice for walleyes on Potato.

Has anyone ever tryed ice fishing on East Crooked? I've seen spear houses in the bay out from the access. A guy at the T@M bait shop in Nevis said they spear some huge northerns outthere. I'm just wondering if there is any type of Walleye, Perch, or Crappie bite during the hard water season. If nothing else I'll bet it would be even more quite and relaxing than during the summer out there....

I haven't been able to get up there yet this winter but i will be up there this coming weekend tryin out the lake for the fist time in winter. I had a friend that was up there a couple of weeks of go and talked to a guy in one of the spearhouses and he was only gettin a few middle sized pike but if you have fished east crooked you know thats preaty good to even catch a pike. I'm probably going to try the sand bar drop off and see what kind of activity is there for eyes.

wow almost fell off my chair when somebody mentioned east crooked. have a hunting shack mile or so away and always try to make a couple of trips out on this lake. used to do fairly well back couple of years ago. last couple of years its been really tough. all I can find is the occasional smallie in my old walleye haunts. I'm running a 115 yamaha on crestliner sportfish. have you folks ever tried waboose? drop me an email if you ever want to trade tips/tactics at:

This year for the week of Memorial Day, we're heading up and staying at Happy Days. Whats a hot technique then, I suppose it depends on the water temperature? I've heard of waboose, never fished it. We always just banged around on West and Middle crooked, now this year we plan to travel around some since I have my own boat. Thanks for the tips guys.

what lake is Happy Days on?

West/Middle crooked.

Never fished Waboose for walleye - but would like to. I am ususally up in that area the first full week of June. My buddy likes to bass fish and walleye fishing is "boring" to him. We have gone to Waboose then and had excellent bass fishing. We primarily fish the Crow Wing lakes - 5/6 in June, then 3rd/4th in July and again in September.

Hey there crewdog.. I spent a full day on waboose last fall. I trolled all over the lake pulling differant types of rigs with my aqua view down. Didn't catch anything but did see a few bass. Ancored in a deep hole in front of the access and pulled up some small crappies with artifical baits. It's a very cool lake but gets alot more pressure than I thought it would. 5 to 10 other boats were also moving around the lake. It is also alot bigger than I thought it was.

Good Luck on East Crooked this weekend crookedfisher...

How many of you guys hunt the area? I bow and muzzle load in paul bunyan.

I'm mostly up in the area for hunting. I pull the boat up when i cut the grass at the shack. I guess I did'nt realize waboose got so much pressure. Seems deserted in the fall. i i only tried waboose once 4 years ago in the duckboat. found some bass but left fairly early after the pup went in the water x3 after some loons (no longer take the dog fishing). haven't been back to waboose since i got the new boat. If you see me on east drop over and say hello. i'll second the good luck wish to CF. only thing i was able to pull out of east on the ice were some small perch (that was before I had all of the equipment though).

Hey Wally, I saw that waboose and wondered if you caught it...that was cool. I'd do it again.

Get out to your shack any more the last couple weeks? If so, how'd you do?

I used to hunt in the bunyan until most of our spots were logged then we decide to try south of town in the badoura. Same thing happened down there so we've been tryin a clearin by the brown cabin in the bunyan.

Posted

If you're talking about the cabin just off of 64 on spur 2 thats the area we hunt to. Who's all going to be in the area for the opener? My parents sold one of the campers to make room for there retirement home (must be ruff). Gets a little to cool at night for my wife and kids to be tenting this early in the season. So me and a buddy are going to try North Long near Brainerd. I used to do really well early on this lake. Hopefully the fish are still in there same spots and we won't be surrounded by the ever growing population of the area. Good Luck to all this fishing season!!!

Posted

I don't think its spur 2 the one road i know we're close to is the akeley cuttoff where it t's there's a brown cabin there, but im going to be fishing east crooked opener and hopeing for some early season eye's but I'll take whatever I can get in that lake.

Hey crewdog! Just wondering how you did last weekend? We drove up for the day on Sunday. My two young boys were able to muster up enough small sunfish and crappies for a fish fry. I went out for about an hour myself and pulled in two nice smallies and missed a couple other nice bites. Sure was a nice day again..

How about you crooked fisher! You been having any luck so far this year?

hey i was up for memorial weekend and the weekend after and havn't caught to many eye's but we've been just hammerin the smallies. Also I've caught more northerns out there already than I did all year last year so I'm hoping that the population is going up. All I will say is the only thing that has worked for me is trolling. The bait is a whole nother story.

Welcome back. Wow it's been since 2018 it looks like. Did you ever "I'm tightening up my footprint and want to build on my Bozeman lot on the Gallatin"?  😏

You're probably right. This isn't official since I've already lost, but I'll make my supplemental guess for May 6th since it's still open. 😄   As long as I can snake my way along the shore and/or plow through some dark ice on the 8th, I'll be happy. I love aluminum boats!

For all of my "problems" with getting a clear signal it's worth it. I can spend more time at the lake because I can work during the day and play or get things done at night. Toss in that I can record and watch a football/hockey/basketball game when I'm done at the end of the day....priceless.   Like your place, our property is more natural and I was worried about having to cut down a bunch of trees. I like that people have to get up close to see our place from the lake through the trees. Luckily I didn't have to do much to get enough a signal that works for me. If I needed to be on video calls, I probably would run the dish down to the shore to get a better view of the sky.   BTW - the main problem with mounting the dish on a tree is that the tree still has a canopy that will block the signal. The best option would be to top a tree and then mount it on the clear-cut top.

Not sure where on the lake you are located, but Paul Bunyan Communications will be extending fiber optic internet for most of the south shore of the lake in the next couple years. If you’re in Beatty township like me, unfortunately we have been snubbed from the expansion.

Our home, Casa De Miel, is in a quiet 1 street gated family neighborhood. With 3 bedrooms - 2 featuring en suite baths. The 3rd room with a beautiful new double queen bunkbed adjacent to the hallway half bath is perfect for kids. That bunkbed is made from the local protected Guanacaste wood, only dead harvested and available there, it is beautiful. All the wood and tile work is pretty cool - we couldn't afford those materials and workmanship here!!. The master has a spacious walk-in closet, and the bunkroom/office has an entire closet wall with safe. With the pool, internet, multiple big screens, an outdoor shower and lovely Casita with a roofed patio, it is perfect for multi-generational families, fishing expeditions, etc. Sleeping capacity is 8. Everything you need is there, and new, from beach and pool toys, PFDs, to quality kitchenware. Serving ware is patio safe, but the wine glasses are glass, so deploy the unbreakable stuff for the 3rd bottle or so. Our property managers are incredibly thoughtful and professional Americans, rated Superhosts on AirBNB. They check you in and are always available. The same crew thoroughly cleans and maintains the exterior landscaping after each visit, and are available additionally if you like for extended stays. Our property managers own their business and are the best - concierge level extra attention is easily arranged. The house is less than a mile to the closest town beach and about 2 miles to another beautiful beach featuring a fantastic beach restaurant. The fishing is great and as a flyfishing guide myself I can recommend thoroughly vetted captains to take you out with conventional tackle. There are kayak guides also. Shore fishing is great anywhere smart. Trout a couple hours uphill. There are local and top notch international grocery and retail stores. The famous 'Monkey Farm' (a unique recovery and animal rescue center with tours, beach horseback rides, etc.) is right there. Many excellent bars and restaurants. Moped and motorcycle, bike, golf cart, scooter and Ebike rentals are easy and about a half mile mile away towards the town center. Kayak, other water toys at the beaches. Surfing and surf lessons are available easily and depart from town beach, as well as whale watching and scenic coastline cruises - smart to research and if you choose, book ahead. We are a little over an hour to a beautiful National Park with hot springs, tours and zips lines, etc. The world famous Lake Arenal area with the volcano and hot springs is a little further, but a very easy day trip. Pricing is flexible but I had to put something in there, so I listed the average daily price. We prefer at least a 3 night rental. Pricing is dependent on your dates, and starts around $220/night - I can send a link with up to the minute pricing. Monthly and longer rentals offer significant discounts. The quiet season is beginning so it is a great time to visit! I have a rustic trout shack on the Madison, and drift rivers for smallies and muskies here in MN, WI, etc. It would be great to meet new fishing buddies through this rental. Maybe we can follow thru for some floats when our calendars line up, or otherwise share/swap resources or fishing opportunities! The property managers currently block out the calendar further than 6 months ahead. Any forum members can contact me and I will facilitate advance bookings. Feel free to email me if you have questions, here's the booking link. Thanks, Pura Vida - Vida de Tiron!

Well since I'm all over this state during the year. Your either not in Minnesota, or your on a Hugh chunk of private land backed up to a state park or wildlife refugee! 🤭

When I was deer hunting last fall, the obvious explosion of wildlife then was evident then too.  I saw over 50 deer, 20+ turkeys, and too many pheasants to count in a week.  Nothing has changed.  These mild fake winters have to be playing a big role in survival.  And if we get another good reproductive cycle in June, I would expect another booming fall season.
