would like to hear from anyone that has ben spearing what lakes and the water clarity and see any fish??????

Posted

I was on Mound, near Upsala, last Monday and had great clarity but only saw one about 5 lbs. Stopped at Mary but it was very green. I've heard Grand has good clear water right now and lots of little hammerhandles.

Have you been out yet?

Big Watab is CLEAR!!! Have not been this year but can see down forever in that lake!! laugh.gif.. I have been to Rice twice-Not too clear- Got 2- 4's and seen 1 bigger also went to Nth. Browns once NOT clear but could see. Got 1- 4-1/2. Went to pelican by StAnna last sat. Heard there are tons of northerns!! seen ZERO.. Was with another spearer- Seen ZERO, And some buddies came out and set some tip-ups up. NOTHING.. Weird. Must have been an off day. The lake was clear but did not even see a perch mad.gif Oh well- Still fun.....

I've only been spearing once around here. I went for an afternoon on Long Lake by Freeport. Clarity was OK, not great but spearable. I only seen four with nothing over 3lbs. I give that lake at least one try every year because about 5 years ago I had the heaviest fish of my life on a tip up but could not land it.

Russ, I've noticed the population of Northerns in Pelican drop drastically in the past 10 years. Used to hammer them, this summer they seemed to be a rarity. From what I've heard, the lakeshore owner have been erradicating them because they eat a lot of the stocked walleye. It sucks because that lake was a pike haven. Also, I've never seen more than a few perch in it.

Went out to Clear Lake last weekend. The clarity was awesome but the fishing was horrible. It was my first time out there this year and I talked to one other guy who said it has been pretty slow. I didn't even see one jack!

I was on Upper Spunk last Saturday.. Clear BUT SLOW... Forgot how much structure was on that lake (I had my new LakeMaster chip in my I Finder- WOW!). Was set up on a nice Drop-Off. Seen lots of fish but NO northerns. Oh well. Talked to some guys and they said it has been slow, for everything out there this year!!

how thick is the ice on clear lake and where on the lake did you spear i was thinking of trying on the point straight out from the access

That point was right where I was spearing. I set up at about 11:30 and stayed until dark. I was set up in about 7.5 feet. I wish I would've went out to about 10 for how clear it was. The ice was about 8-10 inches or so. Let me know how you did.

When I was deer hunting last fall, the obvious explosion of wildlife then was evident then too.  I saw over 50 deer, 20+ turkeys, and too many pheasants to count in a week.  Nothing has changed.  These mild fake winters have to be playing a big role in survival.  And if we get another good reproductive cycle in June, I would expect another booming fall season.

Ya, 120.00 sux. I have Access Broadband, they just raised their rate from 50.00 to 75.00. I'm lucky to get 3 to 5 mbts up or down, sometimes I'll get better. In fairness to them, they have been great trying to respond to my needs, but just can't improve my service. They said that they doubt I'll ever be able to stream a Wild game. I just purchased a new streaming box and it buffers none stop. With the new streaming box and the referral discount, I'll be able to cancel Sling, so, I'll save about 10.00 on my monthly bill. That's what I told my wife 😀 it's true...

That's a better price than when I bought a few years ago. I pulled the giant box across the ice on an old Radio Flyer sled late winter.   Good luck. You'll enjoy Starlink, except for paying the bill. Mine was originally $100/mo, then $110/mo, then they said I was in a low usage area so they dropped my bill to $90/mo for the last two years. I just got a letter a month or so ago saying that we are now in a "high usage" area so they raised it to $120/mo.

I did the app thing. The best place is the middle of my yard and that's not going to happen. I have a tripod stand and a "J" type stand. I've also looked at trimming some trees for a better view of the sky. Once I get it, I'll have to try different areas. Maybe I'll have to hire a guy to climb my tree and install it- I've seen YouTube videos on that. Middle of my roof looks to be somewhat clear, but I don't like to put holes in the shingles. Plus, it's a 12/12 pitch and I don't have Velcro shoes. If anyone is looking to buy Starlink, it's on sale till 4/30 at $159.00. If you do buy it, I can give to a referral code and we'll both get a free month.

With the current conditions and weather forecast I would still stick to Sunday, May 4th.  I almost guarantee Vermilion will be ice-free by the opener on May 10th.  Very likely someone on the list will have the correct date.

Black Bay began opening yesterday afternoon. I could see ice moving around in the middle.

I've got it too. It works great if you can get a clear view of the sky, works decent if there are blockages. I had to take down two trees and still have branches that reach out and interrupt.   Some people have their dish mounted on shore which probably helps a lot. You can download the Starlink app and then walk around your property. It will assess any spot to see if you'll get enough coverage.

I've seen them at the Cub in Minnetonka and just a few weeks ago, the Cub in Chanhassen. The little smelt, smaller than sardines.
