I am planning to make a trip to Greenwood Lake in a week. Can anyone tell me if the roads off of the Gunflint are plowed and accessible with a 4x4 truck? How about Trout lake just outside of Grand Marais? Any info would be appreciated.

The road to Trout Lake Resort is plowed. But most of the Forest Service roads are not, unless logging is taking place. The only problem with that is if you meet a log truck head on, someone has to back up and I have never known a logging truck driver to back up. grin.gif

Welcome aboard otolith.

I wonder how the ice and snow depth is on Greenwood? My plans to open on Gunflint might be changed after hearing of thin ice still.

Frank, Burntside is so horsecrap that I'm planning on opening by walking into Trout off Vermilion again next weekend. Several spots of open water on Bside, 1-3 inches of ice in many places, and some slush. Shoot me an e-mail. Walking in to camp at Trout wouldn't be a bad option for you and Lonnie, and I'd be able to join you for at least one day.

S.T.

Here we go opening on gunflint again. blush.gif The ice depth on Gunflint Lake is 4 inches along the shore. According to Gunflint lodge, people are fishing along the shore but no one is venturing out very far. We haven't gone above freezing during this past warm spell. So we haven't lost much ice, but I don't think we're making any either. There are open slush spots on all the lakes today... Sorry.

How about any of the smaller lakes (mayhew, moss, trout)? Some of them have OK ice?

namaycush,

Welcome to FM. I haven't talked to anyone about those particular lakes. However I know that East Bearskin has at least 9 inches and Flour and Aspen have enough for fish houses and snowmobiles. No ice is ever safe. That being said I would assume there's more ice on Mayhew, Moss, and Trout then the bigger lakes.

I don't know if Moss has turned on yet but if you have ever fished it, you know it can be a hot lake at times. Forest or Gerry at Hungry Jack Lodge might know a little more about Moss if you want to give them a call.

Thanks for the reply gunflint. I appreaciate the info!

Has anyone been hiking into any of these smaller trout(laker)lakes (or plan to) in the area?

I don't need locations, just heads up on the general conditions.

Thanks
