The walleyes have been hit or miss this week, but overall the activity has been above average. Anglers have had good luck on Gull, Round and Pelican Lake. Jigging spoons tipped with fatheads are catching walleyes in 17-30 feet of water. The ice conditions continue to improve as people are starting to drive out on some of the lakes. The pike action has been good on the smaller lakes for anglers using sucker minnows on tip-ups. 10-16 feet of water has been best for pike. Crappies are starting to be caught in the evening hours. Small glow jigs tipped with Eurolarva or crappie minnows are working on the crappies. Merry Christmas to everyone!

Jason, thanks for the help this past weekend. You helped me decide on a lake and put me on fish! I was sorry I missed you when I stopped in. I was impressed with the quality of bait you have and the reasonable prices. It’s nice to have some friendly service and I plan on stopping in again next time I pass by that direction. Over the entire weekend my nephew and I had a nice mixed bag from Walleye to Whitefish to the hot pan fish bite, thanks again!!

Hi Bushwac, sorry I missed you I had to be at the in-laws for some Christmas festivities. Dave left me a message that you had stopped in. We really appreciate the business. I'm happy to hear that you and your nephew got into some action. Stop in next time hopefully we'll have a chance to talk. We are always glad to help out. Thanks.

I will also be heading your way for x-mas so wanted to know your holdiay hours and hopefully I can stop in for some bait and maybe a fish story or two.

Thanks a lot... grin.gif

Just got back from the in laws and did great on the crappies at Gull.

Jason, congrats on your engagement to Rene. She appears to be a real "keeper"! Talked to Hopper's mom today about his opcoming wedding next year. Maybe you guys could have an on-the-water combined wedding! All the guests would have to attend by boat, say at the Rock Pile on Gull!! LOL

That is a great idea! The rock pile wedding!

Was on gull this past weekend in 22', didnt get anything. Talked to my buddy on round. He got 5, 2- 20', 3-15' inchers...he is sitting in 18ft, jig/minnow combo. With the weatehr changing this week, could be an exciting bite this weekend.

Doc and everyone else......

Have a Merry X-mas.... see you on the ICE!!!

Thanks Doc! The "Rock Pile" Wedding! I love it. You are right she is a keeper, lately she's been outfishing me too. I guess she's a quick learner. Take care guys, thanks for the congrats and Merry Christmas!

Out Monday on Gull off of Koobs. About 10 monday am here comes a brown chevy extended cab with a monster house on a trailer. Doors open, ice a crackin. Its walleye Dan looking to go for a swim. We've got 8 maybe 9 inches of ice. He enjoyed it so much he came back out about 2 driving down the same tracks doors open. We're 6-700 yards away from the landing and that ice did not sound happy. Oh well, he's alive. By the way, slayed the eye's 16', flyer jigs and with the head or tail off of a fathead

Jason, Hopper, etal heading down to Illinois for Christmas, so the fish catching is now being left in your capable hands. Merry Christmas.

Was out on Gull this evening,Tuesday. 3 of us caught 19 walleyes,18 by jigging.Best depth was 28 to 30 feet. Best bite from 4:00 to 5:00.Kept 9 from 14 to 15".Ice depth where we were was from 11" to 8 1/2".Lots of guys starting to drive full size trucks around, but I still want a couple of more inches till I will go out.

Was also out on gull last night. Caught 12 under 14" all went back and a 33" eel pout. Talked to another guy on the lake and he had caught a big one (eel pout) as well. Word of caution. DO NOT DRIVE your vehicle on the main lake yet. the ice is highly variable as little as 5.5 as much as 10. Good luck. Q

Walleye Dan is a crazy guy....

Im betting that someone will go through the ICE this weekend. A mid winter thaw is expected these next couple days. BE CAREFUL!!!!

Round is popping them out. Talked to my buddy lastnight who kept 4 16-18'. They threw back 8 little ones and 1 fatty that was 25'. Should be a good weekend. They are sitting in 18ft. Catching the from 9am-1030am...weird.. and 230-400pm. Im guessing it is at that time because of the depth. Anyone else have any idea why those times???

Have any of you been hearing anything out of Whitefish or Cross Lake area???

Posted

Crazy? Yeah, maybe a little!! But sometimes you have to take chances. Hopper, I'm thinking you could have stretched some of your singles into doubles back in the day. You have to take risks to grow said one of my sixth grade teachers back in the day. I guess that stuck!! Anyway, mid-winter thaw? Yesterday was the first day of winter, I would say this is an early winter thaw. The fishing has been about as good as I have seen it in my years fishing Gull in the winter. But the great thing is that it sounds like they are biting everywhere!! Merry Christmas to everyone that reads this. And just remember, you don't have to drive on the lake if you don't want to. tongue.gif

Take Care,

Walleyedan

Crazy like a fox! The bite continues to be good on many lakes. We were on Gull last night caught decent fish from 17-32 feet. Jingles was on the prowl! I had him on the way up but he popped off when I went to pull the transducer. Jigging spoons and fatheads worked for us.

If you are looking for an icehouse rental in the near future give Dan a call. I know his houses are on some really nice fish right now. The bite doesn't get a whole lot better than this.

Ok, Guys,

I'm finally going to get the house out tomorrow morning.

Help me pick a lake for walleye.

These are the lakes in order of proximity to my house.

-Merrifield Bay of North Long

-Pelican (North or south end?)

-Gull

-Round

Any suggestions? I hate these tough decisions.

Hi Chuck,

M.B. North Long, it has it all and it sounds like it is closest to home. Go set it and go get 'em!!

Merry Christmas,

Dan

I agree, I think North Long is a great choice. Gull and Pelican are puting out some nice numbers but the size has been on the small side. Round has been good thus far but lately has been a little less consistent. So N. Long sounds good for walleyes and crappies.

Gull has had a nice bite the last couple of days. The weather has been tremendous, standing on the ice was actually an option. We were having pretty good luck from 17-30 feet but 20-22 feet was the best tonight. Jigging spoons and tipped with a minnow head. Should be a good weekend. There has been a good bite both on the south end of Gull and the north end.

Thanks Guys, I think you're right with MB of NL. I just always second guess my decision on which lake to try thinking that I'm missing a hot bite somewhere else. Too many choices.

Last year I did well out there for both crappie and walleye for about two trips but then got shut down by all the snowmobile traffic and truck traffic that came around me after I set up. This year I'll try to find a spot a little more out of the traffic zone. Too bad to, that was a nice little spot before the traffic hit.

Took all day today to get stuff ready. Have to run to town for a few errands in the morning but hope to be set up by 1 or 2 tomorrow. I'll let you know how I do.

Great to hear that the bites pretty well up there! Some family friends bought the big cabin just west of foley's bar, behind that sand island on Middle Whitefish and they want me to come along this weekend to catch some fish... They no nothing about fishing, but i'd hate to see them get bored of catching noting, any suggestions for fishing that area or the whitefish chain overall?/? I bet we'll be targeting pannies with some tip-ups for the occasional northern, but if there's a chance for a walleye some evening , i wouldn't mind giving that a try as well... I really appreciate the help!! Good luck!

Posted

Moses,

Head out to the first break in 38 feet of water and I will bet you will catch some walleyes. Otherwise hoof it a little further and fish the west side of Foley's (walleyes and northerns).

Good luck,

Walleyedan

Posted

Hey thanks so much for the help! We went out and got two crappies this morning, tried out at the 38' break like ya suggested, no luck tonight but its still fun to be out there!! Thanks again for the help

Posted

Moses,

I will be out on the Whitefish tomorrow. What was the ice like? How deep were your crappies? Rocket

Posted

I had about 8 inches in pretty much all the places i was fishing.. there are stakes in the ice that cross the lake and i think it looks like a designated road or path, but the lake is covered in snowmobile and 4 wheeler tracks... I was fishing crappies in 35 feet of water, but the fish were at 25... I might try it out again today, we'll see.. Good luck!

Posted

Did you end up finding the crappies yesterday rocket?? I went out to that first break again last and didn't get a fish again... You were talking about the one right out from Ruttger's point right?I was there for awhile and then went over to the double lobes and still unable to manage a fish... Guess it just wasn't in the cards for me this week.. Did manage a couple more crappies however to get the skunk of my back...

I just wanted to say that my dad and I rented a house over X-Mas and we caught the most walleyes in a day than we ever have. Our group ended up keeping 21 fish. I caught 4 of the biggest walleyes of my life out there. 2 - 25" and 2 - 23". I think they ran about 8lbs. and 6lbs. We caught them all on shiners in about 28-30 FoW. I also wanted to say thanks to Walleyedan for putting us on the fish! I can't wait til I can get up there again.

Good luck Fishin'

I wasn't able to get out! Our cabin furnace started a fire and then spent the rest of the day putting my new fish trap voyager together. I am hoping to get out today though.

Welcome back. Wow it's been since 2018 it looks like. Did you ever "I'm tightening up my footprint and want to build on my Bozeman lot on the Gallatin"?  😏

You're probably right. This isn't official since I've already lost, but I'll make my supplemental guess for May 6th since it's still open. 😄   As long as I can snake my way along the shore and/or plow through some dark ice on the 8th, I'll be happy. I love aluminum boats!

For all of my "problems" with getting a clear signal it's worth it. I can spend more time at the lake because I can work during the day and play or get things done at night. Toss in that I can record and watch a football/hockey/basketball game when I'm done at the end of the day....priceless.   Like your place, our property is more natural and I was worried about having to cut down a bunch of trees. I like that people have to get up close to see our place from the lake through the trees. Luckily I didn't have to do much to get enough a signal that works for me. If I needed to be on video calls, I probably would run the dish down to the shore to get a better view of the sky.   BTW - the main problem with mounting the dish on a tree is that the tree still has a canopy that will block the signal. The best option would be to top a tree and then mount it on the clear-cut top.

Not sure where on the lake you are located, but Paul Bunyan Communications will be extending fiber optic internet for most of the south shore of the lake in the next couple years. If you’re in Beatty township like me, unfortunately we have been snubbed from the expansion.

Our home, Casa De Miel, is in a quiet 1 street gated family neighborhood. With 3 bedrooms - 2 featuring en suite baths. The 3rd room with a beautiful new double queen bunkbed adjacent to the hallway half bath is perfect for kids. That bunkbed is made from the local protected Guanacaste wood, only dead harvested and available there, it is beautiful. All the wood and tile work is pretty cool - we couldn't afford those materials and workmanship here!!. The master has a spacious walk-in closet, and the bunkroom/office has an entire closet wall with safe. With the pool, internet, multiple big screens, an outdoor shower and lovely Casita with a roofed patio, it is perfect for multi-generational families, fishing expeditions, etc. Sleeping capacity is 8. Everything you need is there, and new, from beach and pool toys, PFDs, to quality kitchenware. Serving ware is patio safe, but the wine glasses are glass, so deploy the unbreakable stuff for the 3rd bottle or so. Our property managers are incredibly thoughtful and professional Americans, rated Superhosts on AirBNB. They check you in and are always available. The same crew thoroughly cleans and maintains the exterior landscaping after each visit, and are available additionally if you like for extended stays. Our property managers own their business and are the best - concierge level extra attention is easily arranged. The house is less than a mile to the closest town beach and about 2 miles to another beautiful beach featuring a fantastic beach restaurant. The fishing is great and as a flyfishing guide myself I can recommend thoroughly vetted captains to take you out with conventional tackle. There are kayak guides also. Shore fishing is great anywhere smart. Trout a couple hours uphill. There are local and top notch international grocery and retail stores. The famous 'Monkey Farm' (a unique recovery and animal rescue center with tours, beach horseback rides, etc.) is right there. Many excellent bars and restaurants. Moped and motorcycle, bike, golf cart, scooter and Ebike rentals are easy and about a half mile mile away towards the town center. Kayak, other water toys at the beaches. Surfing and surf lessons are available easily and depart from town beach, as well as whale watching and scenic coastline cruises - smart to research and if you choose, book ahead. We are a little over an hour to a beautiful National Park with hot springs, tours and zips lines, etc. The world famous Lake Arenal area with the volcano and hot springs is a little further, but a very easy day trip. Pricing is flexible but I had to put something in there, so I listed the average daily price. We prefer at least a 3 night rental. Pricing is dependent on your dates, and starts around $220/night - I can send a link with up to the minute pricing. Monthly and longer rentals offer significant discounts. The quiet season is beginning so it is a great time to visit! I have a rustic trout shack on the Madison, and drift rivers for smallies and muskies here in MN, WI, etc. It would be great to meet new fishing buddies through this rental. Maybe we can follow thru for some floats when our calendars line up, or otherwise share/swap resources or fishing opportunities! The property managers currently block out the calendar further than 6 months ahead. Any forum members can contact me and I will facilitate advance bookings. Feel free to email me if you have questions, here's the booking link. Thanks, Pura Vida - Vida de Tiron!

Well since I'm all over this state during the year. Your either not in Minnesota, or your on a Hugh chunk of private land backed up to a state park or wildlife refugee! 🤭

When I was deer hunting last fall, the obvious explosion of wildlife then was evident then too.  I saw over 50 deer, 20+ turkeys, and too many pheasants to count in a week.  Nothing has changed.  These mild fake winters have to be playing a big role in survival.  And if we get another good reproductive cycle in June, I would expect another booming fall season.
