About 9-10" on Carson's Bay Monday night. Permanents were out, and a lot of wheeler and snowmobile tracks, trucks aren't far away.

I finally will get out on the ice soon, plan on taking my brother and some nephews out fishing later. How thick is the ice out there? Is there anywhere in particular to avoid?

I thought we walk onto Phelps or North Arm. Like to chase some pike and get some panfish. Suggestions?

Went out by Al and Almas on Friday morning. Like all of the lakes I have been out on in the west metro, there was a lot of slush. We measured 8" of ice with 4" of slop on top nearer to the point but straigh out from the point we came up with as little as 3"-4". Nothing to catch there but an endless supply of TINY perch. We went out on fish lake yesterday and its layered with slop as well. Hopefully it all melts down and refreezes, though it looks like it wont be happening soon enough for me!

How deep were you fishing? I was out on Cook's a few days ago and the perch were thick in water less than 20 feet. Got away from most of them by heading deeper.

Out on west Smithtown Bay Tues. 4-5 in of ice.

Same goes for Phelps. 2" of slush everywhere, 4-6" ice under that.

The ice may seem thick, but may be weak. We found up to 8" of ice in some spots on SP Bay made up of soft flaky ice, honeycomb ice, white crusty ice, and not much hard clear ice. There was also 2" to 4" of watery slush on top. May not drive out this year, seems too risky?

It's sure nice to have good winter boots for standing in ankle deep ice-water for hours while fishing!

Fishing you all a Happy New Year!

Fished a hump in the middle of Excelsior bay last night. I measured 12 inches of ice. The top 3 inches of ice were milky and soft. There was at least 1 inch of water on top.
