Good morning, I'm wondering what lakes I might be able to drive out on. I'm too old and fat to pull everything out on the ice. I have a two wheel drive Ranger. Is there still a lot of water on the ice? How deep is the snow? Drove around yesterday but only saw four wheel drive vehicles on the lakes. I would be especially interested in Big Cormorant, Franklin, Island, Height of the Land and maybe Lida, although I'm game to try new lakes too.

Thanks, Greg

I don't think anyone will be driving out on Franklin anytime soon. I was out there Sat p.m. and the amount of water and slush on the lake is unbelievable. You'd hit the water and slush wide open with the sled and hope you don't stop or you'll just sit and spin. The ice is 5-7 inches thick I would say and with all the snow in and around the slush....well maybe think about it in Jan.

Little Detroit is the only one I know of people driving on without problems.

The ice is not a consistent thickness across the many lakes in the region. Plus, there is a lot of slush and water on the ice. I was walking off of a lake yesterday and walked through 3 inches of slop that was under the 6 inches of snow on top of the ice. I wouldn't go anywhere without 4 wheel drive and even then there are drifts hidden from the snow we received after Thanksgiving that you bust through with any weight. It is still ATV or walking time. Too much snow too early. Heard Franklin was sloppy.

Pop ups have increased for me for a while now.  Timed to cover my usual taps about the time I would tap.

So there is a boat on a friend's property, has been there for about 4 years, with no contact from owner, and she is unreachable. It was last registered in 2020. Is there any way for him to make it his, legally?

I'm getting a lot of popups adds. Just wondering if it's just my computer or is every one getting them?

Birds at home have been quiet and out of sight.  Not sure where they went.  Last year they wouldn’t respond to calls - until they did.  But that will be common until the girls quit being friendly.

I've seen about 60 turkeys in 1.5 days of hunting thus far.  Unfortunately they are not responding to calls or decoys and the only birds that have walked within range are hens.   It's just a waiting game now.  Deer hunting for turkeys, hoping a legal one walks past before I have to quit in a few days...

A bunch of webcams available these days to see progress as well:   https://lakevermilionresorts.com/webcams/   Looks to be pulling away from shore. I expect ice out between next Friday and Sunday based on temps in the forecast.  Some sun and then some wind would get it going quickly.

But wait Meg, there's more!   Anyway, do you like fishing?  Trolling's kind of fun!  🤭

Well lol, Google is your friend! 🤭     Yes, the 2012 movie "Loon Lake" was filmed in Minnesota. Specifically, it was shot in southwest Minnesota, with locations including Round Lake, Pioneer Village, and Jackson County. The film is also based on a local legend from southwest Minnesota about a witch who lived by Loon Lake.

Well indeed there is a movie and the trailer will help you near down the 25 lakes a lot by just checking into the Loon Lakes in Southwest, MN.  Should be easy now. Have fun.    Eager to escape the grief and nightmares of the city, Louis Olsen travels to Southwest Minnesota, seeking the peace of the rural countryside. When he accidentally disturbs the grave of a supposed local 'witch' Mary Jane Terlinden, what began as a peaceful reprieve unravels into a haunting nightmare from which Louis cannot escape - but is it all just in his head?

Great. That's usually a good sign for ice break-up.
