Hey everybody,

I've been reading posts and finally decided to join in. I just graduated college and the first thing I'm doing is going on a week long ice fishing extravaganza. My home base is Kato but I live in Mpls because of school, so I know the lakes in these areas pretty well. I hope to hit up some of my mankato favorites but am also looking for a bit of an adventure....any ideas? I LOVE to fish and don't care what I'm fishing for too much. Any fish will do.

Welcome to F.M. Your lucky you can go fishing all week,as it looks to be a good one. If your into sunfish and crappies Washington is pretty good. I have not worked the eyes yet but it can be good.Madison is another lake that does very well for some, but I dont have much luck there. There are also alot of good lakes around Faribault. What fish are you looking at targeting? Someone on this page will give you all the info you should need. Good Luck and welcome aboard. Also,we are having a Forum get-together at German in a few weeks and you are more than welcome to come and meet some of the FMers,as it will be a day of fishing and a good time.I will probably be on Washington 2-3 days this week and if you would like a little help I would be more than happy to be of whatever help I can be.

If i had a week off id head north... Mille Lacs would be a good option.

Therat I agree with tims, Mille lacs would be a great place to start. You might want to try Devils lake in North Dakota or lake Oahe in South Dakota also. I did the full circle two years ago and if I had the time I would do it again all 3 would take about 10 days, lots of miles but fishing was great! smile.gif

Be nice you guys! He said he just graduated from college. Probably looking for an economical trip. I remember my college days of little money.

Try around Kato and Faribault.

But then again, now might be the best time to take a week up north. After you start working full time, you might not get the chance to take the Red Lake or Mille Lac trip.

I know the lakes around kato and the cannon river chain pretty well too. I guess I'm looking for hot spots. I'll probably target walleyes mostly but I'm not going to spend a week on walleyes. I might head west to Benton or Shetek, has anyone ever fished those in the winter? Also, Mille Lacs is on the list, my uncle's both have houses up there but I don't want to spend too much time in one place no matter how good it is. I like checking out new spots just as much as I like catching a lot of fish. Its all about the adventure and figuring out what the difference in some lakes are. I like to be challenged by the fish. Give me some hot spots folks....??? Thanks for welcoming me!

Welcome to FM! Great to have you.

If money is not a concern, I would go to Mille Lacs or Lake of the Woods. If you're looking to stay around here, German and Washington are both producing a pretty consistent panfish bite.

Also, like harvey lee said, we will be having a Forum Get-Together on January 14 on the German/Jefferson chain. See details in another post titled "FM Winter Get Together".

Ya, 120.00 sux. I have Access Broadband, they just raised their rate from 50.00 to 75.00. I'm lucky to get 3 to 5 mbts up or down, sometimes I'll get better. In fairness to them, they have been great trying to respond to my needs, but just can't improve my service. They said that they doubt I'll ever be able to stream a Wild game. I just purchased a new streaming box and it buffers none stop. With the new streaming box and the referral discount, I'll be able to cancel Sling, so, I'll save about 10.00 on my monthly bill. That's what I told my wife 😀 it's true...

That's a better price than when I bought a few years ago. I pulled the giant box across the ice on an old Radio Flyer sled late winter.   Good luck. You'll enjoy Starlink, except for paying the bill. Mine was originally $100/mo, then $110/mo, then they said I was in a low usage area so they dropped my bill to $90/mo for the last two years. I just got a letter a month or so ago saying that we are now in a "high usage" area so they raised it to $120/mo.

I did the app thing. The best place is the middle of my yard and that's not going to happen. I have a tripod stand and a "J" type stand. I've also looked at trimming some trees for a better view of the sky. Once I get it, I'll have to try different areas. Maybe I'll have to hire a guy to climb my tree and install it- I've seen YouTube videos on that. Middle of my roof looks to be somewhat clear, but I don't like to put holes in the shingles. Plus, it's a 12/12 pitch and I don't have Velcro shoes. If anyone is looking to buy Starlink, it's on sale till 4/30 at $159.00. If you do buy it, I can give to a referral code and we'll both get a free month.

With the current conditions and weather forecast I would still stick to Sunday, May 4th.  I almost guarantee Vermilion will be ice-free by the opener on May 10th.  Very likely someone on the list will have the correct date.

Black Bay began opening yesterday afternoon. I could see ice moving around in the middle.

I've got it too. It works great if you can get a clear view of the sky, works decent if there are blockages. I had to take down two trees and still have branches that reach out and interrupt.   Some people have their dish mounted on shore which probably helps a lot. You can download the Starlink app and then walk around your property. It will assess any spot to see if you'll get enough coverage.

I've seen them at the Cub in Minnetonka and just a few weeks ago, the Cub in Chanhassen. The little smelt, smaller than sardines.
