I live in Andover and would like to take a friend that has never ice fished out to a local lake. He lives in Wyoming so I would like to fish a lake that is in between the two of us. (Coon, Linwood, Martin, Peltier, Centerville, come to mind, or any others?). The only problem is that I have never fished these lakes, summer or winter, so I know nothing about them. I would like to put him on fish, but I don't know where to start. I don't care what we catch, northerns pan-fish or whatever, just to keep him interested. Also, since living so close, I would like to get to know these lakes better so I may fish them more often, summer and winter. I have enough gear to set up two guys to fish anything. I will be fishing out of a suitcase house with an atv pulling it onto the lake with a snowmobile trailer, if this helps set up my situation.

Thanks in advance.

I have done well for crappies on Peltier for the last few years. I also have fished Bald Eagle quite a bit for Northerns. But my favorite metro lake for ice fishing is Forest Lake. I have caught lots of northerns and walleyes through the ice on this lake. Willow point is decent for northerns and I know a lot of people catch panfish and walleyes in that area too. I prefer to fish lake one for northerns and walleyes though. Last year we caught quite a few walleyes over 24" (released them all) and one that was about 27" (we didnt measure). We have also caught a couple decent muskies and bass in this same area.

I would take a crack at Bald eagle on the east side of the island. Crappies only. Go to the North end for gills.

Thanks for the info guys- I would like to keep the lake size to a minimum. This way I can stay out of trouble. Where and how do you get onto eagle and forest lake. The only time I have been on forest lake is for the fishing tournament, not the best fishing situation. I would need specifics for either of these lakes because I am not familiar with them in the least.

thanks again.

midwesthunter,

If you don't mind me asking, is Lake One the little "L" shaped bay that comes out of the Southwest end of Forest?

Between lake one and lake two there is an L shaped bay.

Thank you!

When I was deer hunting last fall, the obvious explosion of wildlife then was evident then too.  I saw over 50 deer, 20+ turkeys, and too many pheasants to count in a week.  Nothing has changed.  These mild fake winters have to be playing a big role in survival.  And if we get another good reproductive cycle in June, I would expect another booming fall season.

Ya, 120.00 sux. I have Access Broadband, they just raised their rate from 50.00 to 75.00. I'm lucky to get 3 to 5 mbts up or down, sometimes I'll get better. In fairness to them, they have been great trying to respond to my needs, but just can't improve my service. They said that they doubt I'll ever be able to stream a Wild game. I just purchased a new streaming box and it buffers none stop. With the new streaming box and the referral discount, I'll be able to cancel Sling, so, I'll save about 10.00 on my monthly bill. That's what I told my wife 😀 it's true...

That's a better price than when I bought a few years ago. I pulled the giant box across the ice on an old Radio Flyer sled late winter.   Good luck. You'll enjoy Starlink, except for paying the bill. Mine was originally $100/mo, then $110/mo, then they said I was in a low usage area so they dropped my bill to $90/mo for the last two years. I just got a letter a month or so ago saying that we are now in a "high usage" area so they raised it to $120/mo.

I did the app thing. The best place is the middle of my yard and that's not going to happen. I have a tripod stand and a "J" type stand. I've also looked at trimming some trees for a better view of the sky. Once I get it, I'll have to try different areas. Maybe I'll have to hire a guy to climb my tree and install it- I've seen YouTube videos on that. Middle of my roof looks to be somewhat clear, but I don't like to put holes in the shingles. Plus, it's a 12/12 pitch and I don't have Velcro shoes. If anyone is looking to buy Starlink, it's on sale till 4/30 at $159.00. If you do buy it, I can give to a referral code and we'll both get a free month.

With the current conditions and weather forecast I would still stick to Sunday, May 4th.  I almost guarantee Vermilion will be ice-free by the opener on May 10th.  Very likely someone on the list will have the correct date.

Black Bay began opening yesterday afternoon. I could see ice moving around in the middle.

I've got it too. It works great if you can get a clear view of the sky, works decent if there are blockages. I had to take down two trees and still have branches that reach out and interrupt.   Some people have their dish mounted on shore which probably helps a lot. You can download the Starlink app and then walk around your property. It will assess any spot to see if you'll get enough coverage.

I've seen them at the Cub in Minnetonka and just a few weeks ago, the Cub in Chanhassen. The little smelt, smaller than sardines.
