The ice on the main basin of the North arm was checked in several spots. The surface on the main lake is smooth and fast! The minimum ice thickness was 9" of clear, hard ice. The best quality ice was in the last areas to freeze. The North facing bays on the main lake have large sheets of broken, pointed ice sticking up out of the flat ice. There is slush almost everywhere, but most of it is froze up to the surface and the remainder should freeze tonight. There are no pressure ridges, yet.The snow depth is uneven and a 4 wheeler would be a pain.

The beaver ponds and swamps are risky: dropping water, thawed ground and "Hung up" ice.

Sweet post, looks like I'll be headin up then after the New Year, Thanks Moosefart. SB

MooseFart, a few questions;

Why would it be a pain for 4 wheelers?

How much snow is on the Ice in the North Arm?

What caused the slush? Did you have a big snow up there?

Thanks.

Thanks for the nice detailed post! The more info the better...

Does anyone know if they're still planning on logging up by ashbay this year? I had heard they were and am hoping they'll have a road plowed.

Dealing with a 4 Wheeler that has fallen through the slush ice and is sitting on it’s belly might be construed as a “Pain”. (I have also heard other descriptions of that situation.)

“Why is there slush?” Is this a trick evolution/intelligent design question?

Slush occurs when the lake water floods the ice & mixes with the snow. Slush commonly lies in wait to ambush unsuspecting 4-wheelers and sleds. The occurrence of slush is dictated by the density of the ice, the rigidity of the ice, the density of the water, the characteristics of the snow cover and, as some suspect, Canadian government corruption. Change one of these variables, and the ice can change hour by hour. Remove three of these variables, and you have Canadian government corruption, but it’s Summer time!

Today, a few wheeled vehicles were traveling the ice road to Stangi. The liquid water in the fishing holes was exactly even with the top of the ice. The main basin of the North arm was bumpy, with numerous wind blown snow bluffs. (The ice conditions on the main basin are often different than those of North West Bay or the Sound.)

I was up in Ash Bay in October and it looked like they had logged off part of the west end.

Ya, 120.00 sux. I have Access Broadband, they just raised their rate from 50.00 to 75.00. I'm lucky to get 3 to 5 mbts up or down, sometimes I'll get better. In fairness to them, they have been great trying to respond to my needs, but just can't improve my service. They said that they doubt I'll ever be able to stream a Wild game. I just purchased a new streaming box and it buffers none stop. With the new streaming box and the referral discount, I'll be able to cancel Sling, so, I'll save about 10.00 on my monthly bill. That's what I told my wife 😀 it's true...

That's a better price than when I bought a few years ago. I pulled the giant box across the ice on an old Radio Flyer sled late winter.   Good luck. You'll enjoy Starlink, except for paying the bill. Mine was originally $100/mo, then $110/mo, then they said I was in a low usage area so they dropped my bill to $90/mo for the last two years. I just got a letter a month or so ago saying that we are now in a "high usage" area so they raised it to $120/mo.

I did the app thing. The best place is the middle of my yard and that's not going to happen. I have a tripod stand and a "J" type stand. I've also looked at trimming some trees for a better view of the sky. Once I get it, I'll have to try different areas. Maybe I'll have to hire a guy to climb my tree and install it- I've seen YouTube videos on that. Middle of my roof looks to be somewhat clear, but I don't like to put holes in the shingles. Plus, it's a 12/12 pitch and I don't have Velcro shoes. If anyone is looking to buy Starlink, it's on sale till 4/30 at $159.00. If you do buy it, I can give to a referral code and we'll both get a free month.

With the current conditions and weather forecast I would still stick to Sunday, May 4th.  I almost guarantee Vermilion will be ice-free by the opener on May 10th.  Very likely someone on the list will have the correct date.

Black Bay began opening yesterday afternoon. I could see ice moving around in the middle.

I've got it too. It works great if you can get a clear view of the sky, works decent if there are blockages. I had to take down two trees and still have branches that reach out and interrupt.   Some people have their dish mounted on shore which probably helps a lot. You can download the Starlink app and then walk around your property. It will assess any spot to see if you'll get enough coverage.

I've seen them at the Cub in Minnetonka and just a few weeks ago, the Cub in Chanhassen. The little smelt, smaller than sardines.
