Matt:

Iam looking at buying a new panfish rod and have a few questions for you.First,I want this rod to be used inside and outside for pannies and crappies. If I go to Thorne Bros will the Panfish Sweet Thing work for this? Im wondering if the eyes are large so it wont freeze up outside? Also can this rod be fished without a spring bobber or will I need to add one?

Last question for you is should I go with a Thorne Bros. rod or a Midwest rod,as I have been very happy with thier rods also?

Thanks for the help

I've been using the Panfish Sweet Heart OUTSIDE version this year. Thorne Bros came out with a new line of ice rods designed especially for those who choose to fish outside of a portable as well.

These rods have over-sized guides that freeze-up much less than your typical guides. However, you still get the same features of the Panfish Sweet Heart, so you're not losing anything by going with the larger guides.

I had one made in a 29-inch version and I've been using that everytime I hit the ice. A great rod!

Only problem with this is that their spring bobber won't fit in these over-sized guides. The spring bobber will however, fit in the regular Panfish Sweet Heart.

The outside version will freeze-up less when fishing outside of your portable, but the regular version can be used with a spring bobber. So you have to pick your preference. Depends on how much you fish outside I guess.

As far as needing to have a spring bobber, I'm not going to say no, because they really do help, but I've been doing just fine with my 29-inch outside Panfish Sweet Heart without a spring bobber. The sensitivity is still there, and you really do feel a lot more with a Thorne Bros rod then you do with your standard factory rod.

As far as picking between Thorne Bros and Midwest, I personally go with Thorne Bros, just because I've never felt the need to buy another custom ice rod after using the Thorne Bros rods and they provide everything I look for in an ice rod. I've used the Midwest rods and they are indeed nice, so I'm not knocking them in any way, but the Thorne Bros rods still take the cake in my opinion...

Ya, 120.00 sux. I have Access Broadband, they just raised their rate from 50.00 to 75.00. I'm lucky to get 3 to 5 mbts up or down, sometimes I'll get better. In fairness to them, they have been great trying to respond to my needs, but just can't improve my service. They said that they doubt I'll ever be able to stream a Wild game. I just purchased a new streaming box and it buffers none stop. With the new streaming box and the referral discount, I'll be able to cancel Sling, so, I'll save about 10.00 on my monthly bill. That's what I told my wife 😀 it's true...

That's a better price than when I bought a few years ago. I pulled the giant box across the ice on an old Radio Flyer sled late winter.   Good luck. You'll enjoy Starlink, except for paying the bill. Mine was originally $100/mo, then $110/mo, then they said I was in a low usage area so they dropped my bill to $90/mo for the last two years. I just got a letter a month or so ago saying that we are now in a "high usage" area so they raised it to $120/mo.

I did the app thing. The best place is the middle of my yard and that's not going to happen. I have a tripod stand and a "J" type stand. I've also looked at trimming some trees for a better view of the sky. Once I get it, I'll have to try different areas. Maybe I'll have to hire a guy to climb my tree and install it- I've seen YouTube videos on that. Middle of my roof looks to be somewhat clear, but I don't like to put holes in the shingles. Plus, it's a 12/12 pitch and I don't have Velcro shoes. If anyone is looking to buy Starlink, it's on sale till 4/30 at $159.00. If you do buy it, I can give to a referral code and we'll both get a free month.

With the current conditions and weather forecast I would still stick to Sunday, May 4th.  I almost guarantee Vermilion will be ice-free by the opener on May 10th.  Very likely someone on the list will have the correct date.

Black Bay began opening yesterday afternoon. I could see ice moving around in the middle.

I've got it too. It works great if you can get a clear view of the sky, works decent if there are blockages. I had to take down two trees and still have branches that reach out and interrupt.   Some people have their dish mounted on shore which probably helps a lot. You can download the Starlink app and then walk around your property. It will assess any spot to see if you'll get enough coverage.

I've seen them at the Cub in Minnetonka and just a few weeks ago, the Cub in Chanhassen. The little smelt, smaller than sardines.
