Anyone been out checking ice thickness today or yesterday?? Was hoping to get out somewhere on Saturday?.. I Checked a lake near my home, was half open as of Tuesday evening, could only get to the new ice, and maybe a 1/2" only. Anyone know if Marion or any lakes for that matter opened back up on mon-tues after the rain or did they stay froze?? I cant take it no more, I gotta get out there!

I checked a little lake by me 2 days ago and it had 3 inches about 75 yards out,but it also had a couple of holes also.

Checked Howard today and I would say we need some more cold weather. On the East side there was only 1.5 inches about 35 yards out. It just froze over yesterday so by next weekend it will be ready.

Marion did open back up, but I drove by the other day and it was covered with snow so it's back into ice making mode. Take it easy out there and be sure to check with a spud bar if you walk out. I'll probably be out checking some smaller lakes tomorrow afternoon. These cold nights and 20° days are helping a lot. Only a matter of time now.

10-4 LMITOUT.

Some of the smaller lakes should be set up pretty good by this weekend.

Guys,I have been watching a smaller lake this past week and this a.m. went out thinking I was going to fish.At the shore line to approx. 50 yards out the ice was at 5 inches and 20 yards further it was only 2 inches.I will be waiting awhile yet as it is not uniform at all and with the snow cover and the snow coming it is going to be awhile before it will be considered safe.

Guys, lets keep all the ice reports in this thread to make it easy to find all the information in one spot. Thanks!

I went over to Swan (by Silver Lake) today around noon but didn't walk out very far and found 4" of gray ice. Not the good clear stuff we'd all like for a base this time of year. Hopefully with these past few cold days and sub-zero nights it's putting on ice at a quick rate. I hope to get out by mid-morning tomorrow somewhere and I'm sure it'll be a smaller, shallow lake.

Be safe and go with a buddy if possible.

Well my buddy and I went out checking ice today, we packed all our gear just in case, but well we didnt end up upacking anything on the ice. Heres what we found.

Marion- 2.5 to 3" white ice

Stahls, Erie, Greenleaf, Willie, Allie, Minnie Belle, Ripley, Preston were all..not good, 2-3" near shore, then get out far enough to the clear stuff, maybe an inch, maybe.

Clear(west of Stahls)- two portables out there, didnt stop and check but would assume maybe 4"

Jennie was the lake with most ice we found, about 7-8" 25 yards out, walked out about 150 yards and was at about 4-5" out there.

We decided not to fish anywhere and just wait a little bit and be safe, this snow on top is killing our ice making.

If anyone got out today or has any other info, please post!

Fished from 11-4 on Swan by SL. No fish but it was more of a test run to check everything out and it was definitely nice to be on the ice once again. Ice was about 4-5" where I was at and didn't use the auger to make holes as the chisel was enough to get the job done.

Long time guys, Anywho im heading out to try my luck near litchfield, Will try and check a few lakes just to see what we have..

My first posting, just registered. The ice looks decent on Jennie, 6-7". Belle, Marion, Erie, Sthals, not good, about 2" but real spotty. The snow is really frustrating, hurting ice making. Need a little wind here to blow it off.

Ice is not so good off of the north end of Jennie - went out a good distance (sun. night) - ice was cracking the whole time - finally drilled some holes - 2.5" - the ice must have been sagging cause pretty soon I was sitting in a lake of water with 2" of water around my boots. Figured the weight of the water/snow was not good for the already light ice situation so I bagged it after 20 min – no fish. Fished south end Sat. night - no fish decent ice - 4 inches or so. – cold weather is helpingt!

Went out of the sportsmans landing on Washington last nite. 2-2.5" the first 100 yds, 3-3.5" after that. No fish to report.

Well guys did not go out today, Im gonna wait for for a day or 2 yet! With this cold weather and some warmer weather coming. Im gonna try wensday and just let the lake firm up a tad more..2yr old at home one on the way im gonna play it safe..

Good luck guys and be safe.

And welcome Demonglow always nice to see a new fmer

Anyone know about ice on Hook? Forgot to check this weekend.

Posted

Welcome Demonglow! Thanks for the report.

The lakes should be better by this weekend but take it easy. As everyone can read from the reports above the ice thickness can vary, and at this time of year every inch could mean the difference from being dry or wet.

Good Luck!

Heard there were only a few inches on Swan (Dassel) as of yesterday.

3-4 inches on SL by Arlington yesterday. Didn't see it for myself but was told some spots only 2 inches. One guy had a four wheeler out there already, CRAZY! Fished it Sat. and Sun., a couple of small (4-5 inch), crappies, and a couple of bullheads.

Posted

So were the bullheads the first fish of the ice fishing season 2005??? Haven't heard anybody else catch anything so far. I'll be waiting till this weekend. Welcome Demonglow.

Anyone out there checked any of the hutch area lakes lately? Took thursday, friday off to fish (yes!). Ice should be good by now with the nasty temps.

Here's todays report-

Went to Marion first, looked like 3 houses were out monday evening, followed their steps, we set up, however fished only about 20 minutes. ice was crap. about 1-1/2" of a soft slush on top, then there was like a gap of nothing or air that I could stick my whole hand in dang near, then about 2"of good clear ice maybe. We were ok in the portable til someone walked out to talk and then water started oozing up all over. I would advise everyone to stay off that sucker til the weekend for sure, very uneven ice, after we got off the lake we wondered why we were even out on that crap. anyways-

stahls had 3-4 inches 20 yards off shore, belle had the same out from piepenberg landing, two guys spearing on greenleaf, never checked ice thickness there, then finally we did fish Willie, There was a good solid 5 inches all the way across. fishing was very poor, but good to get out. Also Allie had 4 1/2", and Preston 5 1/2" both only 20-30 yards from shore though. Besides Marion, ice looks pretty decent, should have walkable ice all over by saturday for sure. hopefully!

anyone get out today?

Posted

Not today but for sure thursday and friday. Erie first and then maybe over to Washington for some walters. Was going to try Marion until your report came thru, thanks for the saved time. Anyone heard anything about Star? A little bird told me of some decent craps. Might be bad info though.

Posted

let us what the ice conditions are like, I would like to get out Friday. Where I dont know, but somewhere hopefully.

Posted

I will probably be going out on Friday as well. Thinking about hitting Jennie.Maybe Stella. Depends on the ice conditions. Hey Lindy are you from Gibbon? Winthrop here. I probably know you I used to work in Gibbon for a few years.

Posted

Well, hit Erie Thursday morning. 7" about 30 yards out them 4" the rest of the way. Ice was decent, water stayed in the hole. Two small perch and one 12" eye. Went to Washington after that. Sportsman landing has real spotty ice. Use the east landing, 5-8" of ice all the way out to the hole. One 3# snake, mix of perch and a 3" walter. Yes, 3 inches. Stella is NOT safe, checked it. Same goes for Belle. Gonna hit Washington then check Jennie and Hook. Later!

Well,

I'm heading West to Bell Lake tonight from the cities....Is it still bad ice? We have a cabin there and I haven't been out in about a month. I have not set one foot on ice yet this year and man am I ready to. As of 1:45pm on Friday, Dec. 9th, what does anyone know about Belle? Preferably the Northwest corner? (Cabin location, and I do not want to walk toooo far on the shotty ice)

Thansk for the update,

Ya, 120.00 sux. I have Access Broadband, they just raised their rate from 50.00 to 75.00. I'm lucky to get 3 to 5 mbts up or down, sometimes I'll get better. In fairness to them, they have been great trying to respond to my needs, but just can't improve my service. They said that they doubt I'll ever be able to stream a Wild game. I just purchased a new streaming box and it buffers none stop. With the new streaming box and the referral discount, I'll be able to cancel Sling, so, I'll save about 10.00 on my monthly bill. That's what I told my wife 😀 it's true...

That's a better price than when I bought a few years ago. I pulled the giant box across the ice on an old Radio Flyer sled late winter.   Good luck. You'll enjoy Starlink, except for paying the bill. Mine was originally $100/mo, then $110/mo, then they said I was in a low usage area so they dropped my bill to $90/mo for the last two years. I just got a letter a month or so ago saying that we are now in a "high usage" area so they raised it to $120/mo.

I did the app thing. The best place is the middle of my yard and that's not going to happen. I have a tripod stand and a "J" type stand. I've also looked at trimming some trees for a better view of the sky. Once I get it, I'll have to try different areas. Maybe I'll have to hire a guy to climb my tree and install it- I've seen YouTube videos on that. Middle of my roof looks to be somewhat clear, but I don't like to put holes in the shingles. Plus, it's a 12/12 pitch and I don't have Velcro shoes. If anyone is looking to buy Starlink, it's on sale till 4/30 at $159.00. If you do buy it, I can give to a referral code and we'll both get a free month.

With the current conditions and weather forecast I would still stick to Sunday, May 4th.  I almost guarantee Vermilion will be ice-free by the opener on May 10th.  Very likely someone on the list will have the correct date.

Black Bay began opening yesterday afternoon. I could see ice moving around in the middle.
    • SkunkedAgain
I've got it too. It works great if you can get a clear view of the sky, works decent if there are blockages. I had to take down two trees and still have branches that reach out and interrupt.   Some people have their dish mounted on shore which probably helps a lot. You can download the Starlink app and then walk around your property. It will assess any spot to see if you'll get enough coverage.

I've seen them at the Cub in Minnetonka and just a few weeks ago, the Cub in Chanhassen. The little smelt, smaller than sardines.

Where is the 1/4" pile of melted cheese on top? 😋
