The coolest thing I find about banded birds is not so much how many each hunter has shot, but where they were banded and where they shot...the story behind the band.

It's really amazing how far some have traveled as well as how long they have lived.

Please share the stories.

I have one banded mallard that was shot near Horicon, WI, but banded somewhere in Minnesota. (Too long ago to be specific).

We shot two banded honkers one day this fall. They were shot 5 miles SE of Madison, banded 2 miles SW of Madison in 2001! Great story huh! grin.gif

I can top that one Rost. I shot a banded honker by Talcot several years ago and it had been banded in Cottonwood County (same area) ELEVEN years earlier.

Did the thing ever leave????

I get the Wildfowler magazine and each month they have info on about 12 banded ducks or geese. It tells you where they where banded and where they where taken. They also give you a map. It is pretty cool.

I was pretty excited when I shot a banded goose at the Weaver Bottoms. Got my band info back from the USGS and found out it was "too young to fly when banded" earlier that year and was banded near Alma, Wisconsin. For those of you who know the area you could say it was darn near right out of the net. Probably within a mile of where it was banded. It was still exciting to get one with a band.

Canadian goose shot on the afternoon of October 9th, 2005. Banded as "too young to fly in 2003".., "male".., "banded near Oak Bluff, Manitoba".

On that day, in the morning, my buddy shot one that was banded in 2005, banded in Bemidji.
