Well, it's off to a 2-2 start. The boys' legs sure looked tired tonight against the Terps. Seemed happy just to make the time line in the second half. Even Munson's tantrum couldn't fire them up. Heard a comment from an ESPN analyst: "Good thing Munson tossed the jacket... it didn't look all that great on him anyway." ouch. Big Ten can't get no respect. I'd like to think things will be different when everyone's back in uniform, but could we be looking at a losing nonconference season?? That'll burst yer bubble, for sure.

Monson has no one to blame but himself. Leaving Grier in a full 40 minutes against NDSU was asinine. Pure stupidity. We are down to 7 healthy players. Nice. And I don't see a lot to be fired up about either, it isnt like we have had a good recruiting class lately. It really bums me out, cuz I love the Gophers.

hey we were winning at half time...to bad the 2nd half was a nightmare. I would rather get blown out by a ranked team, then lose by 1 to gardner web frown.gif

I still cant believe that.

Monson sure had a nice coat toss last night though. Clem left a lasting impression.

yeh i agree there was no reason to play grier for 40 minutes on your first game of the year what was he thinkin

Well, how about yesterday's win over UNLV for a reminder of what we were missin'? Mr. Grier comes back after only 3 of his "4 to 6 weeks" rehab, leads all scorers with 19, and he's not even 100 percent yet. Once Hargrow is ready and Rico gets his head on straight, the Gophs are going to be very fun to watch.

It is starting to look better for the Gophs--I sure hope that they can stay respectable throughout the Big Ten season. I have been watching some games lately and it seems like the Big Ten may be better than most people had originally thought! I sure am glad that Grier will be back for the Big Ten--would hate to see this team wothout him! confused.gif

Close call against UAB, they were fortunate to squeak this one out the way they played in the 2nd half. Good to see Hargrow have a good game from the floor. Lucky thing UAB's big gun missed the bus! smirk.gif

Exciting game, indeed, with Hargrow coming back in a big way. We needed his 20 pts tonight. Grier has a steady 12 pt night with a few of his flashes of brilliance. Boone pours on the threes (altho it didn't seem exactly right without at least one ABU!! FOR..THREEEEE!!) Now can Rico get it together somehow? I love watching him on defense, but find myself praying nobody passes him the ball...

Condolences to my Frazee buddies who had tickets but couldn't see enduring the drive down and back in today's rotten weather.

Well, the Gophs take a respectable 9-2 nonconference record into Big Ten play next week and although they were obviously favored in the last half dozen games, I thought they've looked pretty good over all, at least defensively. Trouble is, they're in a conference that's not just 'pretty good'... there will probably be six or so Top 25 teams in there. But, if everyone can stay healthy I can see a very entertaining Big Ten season. Any other predictions?

Posted

Ouch. I sure hope that the Northwestern game is not how the whole Big Ten season plays out for the Gophers. 18 points in the first half?!? And we were just talking up that favorable schedule, playing the 3 bottom feeders 5 times this year, and only needing to win those 5 and play .500 ball against the others to make the NCAA tourney... Many more like this one and WE'RE the bottom feeders. At least I passed up an opportunity for tickets to today's game... would have been a long drive home.

Man, I used to be a Monson fan, but that team was not ready to play. Couple that with his stupid decision to play Grier the last few minutes against NDSU and Monson is not having a good season. Plus, can you say that you are excited about the future and all the players he has coming in? I certainly am not. Someone tell him that a bad record in NCAA Hoops does NOT get you a high draft choice...

Posted

I think that that is the most disappointing part--he is not getting any big time recruits! We cannot win with the type of athlete that he is bringing in--I really did think by now that the Gophers would resemble what Gonzaga looks like!!

Posted

So, how many first half points will it be tomorrow in West Lafayette? 16??? confused.gif

Only if they hit 2 of their first 30 shots!!!!!

Well, I told myself I wouldn't post here again until they got at least one conference win... Even after today, I'm still not sure what to expect. At least the Gophers got to pound it in inside a bit, something horribly lacking for some time. Abu-for-Three and Puchtel the Hahvahd Walk-On had their day in the spotlight. I'm worried that Grier has the nice moves and the dbl-dbls and all, but seems to still have that play-like-I-wanna-play attitude, like when they need to be running out some time and he chooses to crash into 2-3 defenders in the lane instead. Things can't be quite ducky between him and Monson.

You called for it.  The north wind blew strong today.  The ice was disappearing fast.  Pictures below are from 4:30pm and 8:20pm.  Just a small sheet of ice left in the south-east bay.  Should be gone by tomorrow.  Think I will put the boats in the water tomorrow.   I have never eaten smelt before.  Will be interesting to see how I like them.  I'm waiting for the call to help clean them.  Have never done that before either.   Need not be present at the smelt fry to win, unless you want to make sure I don't lose your $2,500.  Drawing will take place live online on May 18th.

On the South Shore...  The focus along the south shore is watching the ice disappear from back bays, big pike sliding into the bays and ditches for the spawn and of course ice out on the main lake (Big Traverse Bay).   From now until the Minnesota Fishing Opener on May 10th, anglers will be targeting northern pike (and sturgeon on the Rainy River). Ditches are running and shallow bays are starting to pop open. Now is the time when the big pike are moving in, staging for the upcoming spawn.  This is a great spring fishing opportunity not available in most parts of the state. Various techniques for spring pike are effective.  A dead bait under a bobber, casting spoons or trolling shallow crankbaits all can be effective. However you fish, shallow bays along the south shore such as Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are a prime spot to hook into a true trophy. The pike limit on the Minnesota side of Lake of the Woods is three fish per day. All pike between 30 and 40 inches must be released, but one pike over 40 inches can be kept. Many anglers choose to take measurements and photos, release their fish, and order a replica mount to remember the catch. All great options! On the Rainy River...  Now that walleye season is closed, sturgeon fishing is in full swing and the bite is very good.  Anglers are catching solid numbers of these prehistoric giants. Some of the feeder creeks have opened up, increasing the current. That added flow has lowered visibility of the water a bit, but sturgeon primarily feed by scent, so fishing has not been affected. Most anglers are using 4 to 6-ounce no roll sinkers with their sturgeon rigs to stay on the bottom in the heavier current. A typical sturgeon rig includes an 18-inch leader, a 3/0 or 4/0 circle hook, and baited with nightcrawlers, or crawlers paired with frozen emerald shiners. Local bait shops and resorts are well-stocked with everything you’ll need. The sturgeon season is open through May 15th. Here are the upcoming dates to keep in mind: Catch and Release Season: May 8 – May 15, and again October 1 – April 23. Harvest Season: April 24 – May 7, and July 1 – September 30. Closed Season: May 16 – June 30. Up at the Northwest Angle...  Progress is being made with more and more open water this week. Other than some local airboats, travel on the ice is pretty much done.  The focus is on the upcoming open water season.  Resorts and area guides are already preparing.   Based on the ice fishing season, expectations for fishing success naturally are high.  Lake of the Woods is healthy. Now’s the time to plan your spring or summer fishing trip!

Most medium sized lakes around grand rapids went ice free today. Closer to bigfork they still have ice pulled away from shore. Turtle by Marcell is still pretty covered but that's a big deep lake

hookmaster.....our cabin is 7 miles west of talmoon. what lake would that be????   there's a fella on another site many may know, is a dr. posted some small lakes in the area opened up completely last week.......he's between and rapids and Marcell.   that white is a good possibility the top is is nothing more then very honeycombed ice.  i've been watching several webcams up there 1 being on bowstring and that ice is moving away from shore more everyday.  that ice turned from very dark to whiteish also!!!!

I was out in a boat on Minnetonka on March 28th. Only a handful of bays were ice free. That lake maxed out at ~24" of ice this winter where I fished. Talked to a friend in the Grand Rapids area and he said the lake where his parent's cabin is near Talmoon is still white and not pulling away from shore yet, and the cabin is on the east side!!

26 inches of ice still?  Man, that's ridiculous.   The lakes have been open by me since April 1.  It's amazing how much of a difference there can be just a few hours away.
