Lower unit water

Question

Posted

Is it normal to get a very small amount of water in the lower unit. I get a slightly milky color when changing in the fall. It has been like that the 8 years i have had it. Thanks.

I wouldnt say normal. I have never had a milky colored mix come out of my lower unit in over 20 years of dealing with motors. I would make sure you check it regularly and winterize well before freeze up.

its a pretty common problem, often fishing line wrapped around the prop shaft in the seal tears them up, also check the lower unit plugs to make sure the little seals are still around them, but most likely the prop seal is leaking. the biggest problem would develop if you didnt change the watery oil and it froze over the winter. #1 cause of cracked lower units.

If you fish rivers in the winter you may want to repair it, and if you haven't within the last few years throw in a new water pump. right around 50$ for the pump and housing. Great peace of mind since Murphys law causes it to fail when you have about 6 miles of river to run upstream tongue.gif.

Thanks for the info guys. It definitely gets changed EVERY fall before I put it away. I do spend most of my time on the river, mostly the 'Croix, and that would stink. I almost always put in downstream from where I'm fishing.
