Bad Medicine Lake - Ice Fishing

Recommended Posts

I would like to try Bad Medcine Lake this winter, based upon a recommendation from an acquaintance. Does anyone have any experience with this lake and can you advise what species I might gear up for( Walleye / Trout / Crappies / etc)?

Thanks

Deadhead,

Thanks for the words of caution on the closed season. I have two trout addicted teen sons who are hell bent on some trout ice angling this winter. I will have to find a lake which allows the pursuit of salmonids through the ice. So ardent is their trout fervor that they would probably be content to peer down a hole and just watch trout.

If you're looking for some trout lakes to fish up here in the winter, the only two lakes open around the area are Long Lake, north of Itasca S.P. on Hwy 200, and Bass Lake in Maplewood S.P. east of Pelican Rapids. A good winter lake in the metro is Courthouse lake in Chaska (beware the circus on the opener), and Foster-Arends in rochester has some great opportunities. There is a special reg on the lake, 3 trout bag limit, with only one over 16", however there are no restrictions on live bait, and the trout season is open year round.

If you want more info, let me know.

Hondemon, one january before the lil island with the house sunk, a bud and I drove out from the access after drilling a hole 30' off shore and found 13". we drove to about 100 yds No. of the lil island with the ll house on it. drilled two holes which seemed to drill quite fast. set up the house and then noticed the thin-ness of the ice, turns out we were sitting on 8" of ice. allthough stunned, we fished anyway, caught 2 trout(released), and saw a huge northern threw the hole way down there. we left before it was dark, wanting to live. (we were young and DUMB)

are there springs..I say yes, there is no outlet. the lake keeps going up. be carefull out there!
