I taught in Zimbabwe for a couple of years and "tafadzwa" was a common name in the rural area. It means "to be happy" although a great all purpose word in that it can change meaning depending on inflection and usage. Few things are as great as a fishing outing, so it works well.

My marine band radio handle. Grew up on the East Coast. Direction of the wind on at least one day of every fishing trip. Needed a Marine Band handle and my wife wouldn't let me use "Peterdragin" grin.gif.

Thats funny, My next ffl team will be PeterDragon.

My name is based on the fishing league I am in. The most unoriginal name for a fishing league...

Tuesday Night Fishing League

Who are the ad wizards that came up with that one.

We even have embrodered guide series fishing shirts from Gander with our names on the front and a big TNFL on the back. Its really generic and most people don't wear them. But I do. Better than wearing my work clothes, as we fish, you guessed it tuesday nights, usually right after work.

McGurk, actually supposed to be spelled McGuirk, is a character on a show that used to run late Sunday nights on Adult Swim called Home Movies, and he is the worst role model-soccer coach-father figure-date-bachelor I've ever seen, and here's a picture of him to the left

and yes, that is a chicita(sp) banana tattoo along with a cow head tattoo

WHEN I FIRST SIGNED UP FOR THIS SITE IT WAS PRIOR TO THE YEARLY DRINKING I MEAN SPEARING TRIP. I THINK IT WAS 2 YEARS AGO MAYBE 3 AND IT WAS ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE CRAPPY STARTS TO THE HARDWATER SEASON. SO I WAS TRYING TO WEIGH OUT THE OPTIONS -IS IT WORTH WALKING OUT ON 2" OF ICE ON WHINNY AND RISKING YOUR LIFE FOR THE SLIMMER?- WELL NEEDLESS TO SAY I WENT. I WAS THE GUINNI PIG THAT YEAR AND HAD TO WALK OUT FIRST WITH THE CHISSEL AND THE ROPE TIED AROUND MY WASTE.

THEREFORE HARPOON-OR-BUST = GO SPEARING OR CANCEL

I was ice fishing a lot at the time I enrolled here. I was using those light Zapping things to charge my glo baits at the time. Still do. Also a big Simpsons fan but the characters were over used so I went with Matt Gronings other less succesful show Futurama and picked up on Zapp Brannigan a leader who became famous for beating the Kill bots by throwing wave after wave of men at them until they went past their preprogrammed killing amounts and shut down. I don't know why that's funny but it is. So altered the spelling a bit and that's the result.

If I'm not in a boat, I'm in an airplane, or want to be. One of my all-time favorite planes is one I haven't flown (yet) - the P-51 Mustang. The -B models and up had a British-designed Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, displaced something like 1760 cubic inches, had a two-stage supercharger, and put out slightly less than 1700hp, turning a 12-foot prop. The Brits used the same engine for their Spitfire and Hurricane fighters, and I think a bomber or two. It has a very memorable sound, one that people can pick out long before they see the plane.

Anyways, I'm a fairly "crappie" angler, and couldn't think of a good angling name, so I went with something I was more comfortable with.....

Fergus Mor McErc King of Scots of Dalriada.....my mother is into geneology and he's apparently some ancient grandfather of mine (on her side). He died in 501. He's regarded as the the first king of the Dal Riata, the people from which the Scottish kings are descended from.

Do a search for some old SNL clips where Alec Baldwin plays Pete Schweady, a guest on 'The Delicious Dish' NPR radio program. Pretty funny stuff. (Now featured in my updated avitar...)

V-12, that spitfire motor sounds BAD A-S!!

"Southerner" simply seemed right at the time. I moved to MN a few years ago from Savannah, GA. Although I don't get it as often now as in years past, it's still a regular occurrence at work or elsewhere when someone will ask where I'm from. I usually tell them "Duluth". laugh.gif Sometimes they actually believe me. laugh.gif

The alias that I use on some other fishing related pages was already taken when I registered. Animal was the first name that came to mind. So Animal I am.

I'm not a very good ice fisherman. God knows I get out enough to catch some fish, but more often than I'd like to admit, I come home with an empty bucket. mad.gif

I'm able to get out more in the winter but I'd prefer open water fishing ANY day.

My preferred name,Uncle Bob, was taken. So, since I spend a bunch of time in fish houses and at the time my favorite beer was Ice House, and I don't like to capitalize, I became-----icehousebob

I've been a MN Wild season ticket holder since day one. I get pretty rowdy at the games and heckle the opposing players a lot when they visit the sin-bin. So, I self-proclaimed my nickname on-line to be wild_instigator.

I almost had to change mine. Took the boat out one last time on Friday and only caught one sinking little northern. In the about eight years I've had my boat, I've only been "skunked once". The most expensive equipment and fishing skill will never replace "dumb luck". smile.gif

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
