The rules are the rules. They don't put out a seperate edition for landowners. You can't do whatever you want on your own land. Little things like permenant stands or if you're shooting close to YOUR house or cutting shooting lanes is your business, but all the laws apply to you even on your own land.

We're not trying to be jerks cause you asked an honest question. It just came out wring sine you answered your own question in your first question.

And just to be clear, if a CO sees your dekes out on your land before legal time he can arrest you on your own land.

...could be wrong, but I believe if it's your own land or "not public", you can leave your decoys out until they rot away. Thus eliminating the "one hour" before shooting time rule.

And stroke, when's the last time you ever heard of anyone being "arrested" over a decoy infraction? tongue.gif

you are wrong! one hour before the season! after that you can leave out as long as you want during the season on private property! But why would you want to do that! have them stolen which has happened! Or have them get caked up with ice and snow!!

Wasn't trying to be a smart (Contact US Regarding This Word)! It is in the regs. Been that way for years! But if you do put them out early and get them taken by the CO let us know we may want to bid on them at the auction!!

So, what if I left a few blocks out on my pothole after YWD? Would I still run the risk of incarceration?

I guess I was kinda talking about after the season opened. Going under the assumption that if your hunting private land, there's probably no rush to put them out. But the flip side is, I'd be willing to bet that nobody has ever been cited in this state for doing just that on their own property wink.gif

Thanks for all the info guys, I will have to check into this subject alittle more, probably call the local c.o.

Why should you be allowed to lure birds into your safe haven and everyone else has to wait till 8:00 am before they can lure birds in? Kinda like baiting if u ask me. The question is, is the season open? NO!! Kinda Like having your fishing line in the water before it is time even though your bait is not on the bottom and you havent caught anything I'm sure the CO will write you a ticket! Good Luck!!

PS. Yes They Have Been Cited for breaking the law and you can bet if it's a slow dat they will cite you for that too!!!! They can and will get you for anything not legal if they want to!!

Maybe it's just the bennys of owning my own land huh?

Just like baiting eh? LOL Maybe I just put em out early so I can get those cupped wing feet down pics at sunrise smirk.gif

WHY DID YOU ASK IF YOU PLAN ON BREAKING THE LAW ANYWAYS!! And I was Called a SMARTA$$. It is poachers like you that wreck it for everyone. You can let the birds swim around in your dekes while everyone else is spooking them up putting out there dekes, for them to land in yours! Whats wrong with this picture HUH? So it's your land you can use lead and no plug too!! HMMM I have land in the refuge I can shoot waterfowl then HUH? MORONS wreck it for the ones that do it the legal way. Now we know why you limit out in the first 3 minutes.

Now relax there maggie, take a deep breath... . Wouldn't want you have an embolism a week before the big dance.

First off...I didn't ask. It was some other inquisitive duck hunter that asked a simple question and was jumped upon by a couple of holier than thou types.

Second, now your making the leap to calling me a poacher(LOL). Wrong again. Wouldn't hunt the way you describe, by letting all the birds YOU scared up land in my blocks and cut em at precisely 9 am, thus giving me exclusive bragging rights about "limiting out" right away wink.gif

Sounds to me like someone has "duck envy", as well as high blood pressure tongue.gif

And another question you asked! So you did ask. Sorry I blew up! Magnum!!

I was referring to on opening day.

Also, just cause you can't think of someone getting ticketed for deke infractions doesn't mean it won't happen and it doesn't create suspicion. Kinda like getting pulled over because you have a taillight out or you weren't wearing your seatbelt. It may be small, but its one good reason to check out anything and everything in your boat and slough.

The benny's of owning land are self-explanitory, but hoping it provides you with some protection from bending the rules is not a safe bet. People talk, including neighbors. Just look at the 4 guys who just got tagged for shooting owls.

They call it TIP line for a reason and I for one am not afraid to use it. I have and I know it works.

I'm not holier than thou, I just know and follow the rules. Guess that does make me holier than thou. laugh.gif

Here is what it says in the supplement....

"UNATTENDED DECOYS

During the open season for waterfowl, a person may not leave decoys in public

waters between sunset and one hour before lawful shooting hours or leave

decoys unattended during other times for more than four consecutive hours

unless the decoys are in waters adjacent to private land under the control of

the hunter and there is not natural vegetation growing in water sufficient to

partially conceal a hunter."

So magnum...if you are so sure this is illegal, post up the law you are speaking of....or else apoligise.

http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/rlp/regulations/hunting/2005/waterfowl.pdf

http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/rlp/regulations/hunting/2005/waterfowl_sup.pdf

The law is not there because it gives hunters an unfair advantage over the ducks...it is there to keep hunters from setting up blinds and decoys at midnight or leaving there overnight to reserve or pre-empt other hunters from getting the hot point or hoarding up an area. As an example.....I could get to the duck swamp Thursday night, scout on Friday and find a hot spot.....set up my dekes to hold that spot, then sleep in knowing my decoys are holding my spot. Public areas are first come first served. If you want to get up at midnight, go out to the honey point and anchor your boat....go for it. Just don't set up a blind or put out decoys until it is time.

First off! I know what I delt with 20 years ago guiding. Your post that you BOLDLY posted PUBLIC Says DURING OPEN SEASON. If you look at the laws it doesnt say anything about DECOYS, blinds, public waters, etc during CLOSED SEASON. Because it is illegal to be in pursute of game during closed season. Even if you are the landowner! I did email the DNR with this question. So Hobbydog I might applogize If they say it's ok. But Why dont you show me where it says what you can and CANT do to pursue waterfowl during a CLOSED SEASON!

So what you are saying about putting out decoys during OPEN SEASON in public waters is I cant an hour before shooting time, right! Well since the season dont open till 9:00 am., then season is not open yet, right! So I can put out decoys anytime since the season is CLOSED and dont open till 9:00 am Oct. 1. confused.gif Makes sense to me!!

I will apoligize to Icecold though! It doesnt say it in there. They use to put out a good book years ago with out all the adds.

Just because it doesnt say you cant do something does not make it legal. Like driving deer the nite before opener from state land to your private property. Tell were it says you cant do that. THE SEASON is NOT OPEN!!

Just because you have decoys out does not mean you are in pursuit of game. I do a lot of photography in the off season...is that considered pursuing game? Again, the intent is not that putting decoys out early give you an unfair advantage over game....it is that it is to prevent hunters from locking up public areas by using decoys to reserve a spot. On private land this is not an issue. On private land you can build a permanent duck blind, on public you can not. On private land you can use spinners (during prescribed times) while on WMAs you can not. There are different rules for private land owners.

Either way, a question was asked and you made a big stink about reading the rule book yet now you are e-mailing the DNR for clarification. Something we should all do vs. ask questions online where you will get the whole spectrum of answers.

NOW Hobby dog you seem to know so much!! I was going what was told to me by CO. Gilbertson in Olmsted county!

I did Call the SE Minnesota DNR and ask to talk to a warden! The secertary said, there was none avaliable so I asked if she a Copy of the Closed season hunting regulations. She said, no and thought it was a strange request. I told her that we should spend several hundred thousand more dollars printing them up because some people want to see it in writing what they can and cant do for hunting during the closed season!!

Now then, asking about decoys on opening day was the idea that HUNTING would take place. Now the statement made earlier about (taking pics LOL wink.gif ) Was made in the sudgestion that since he had a camera out with him while he was set up with THE BENNYS OF HIS OWN LAND sounds like just another reason to do what ever they want.

Nowhere was it mentioned about pictures only without a gun.

ALSO I did apoligize to Icecold! The only reason I emailed the DNR was because YOU WANTED TO SEE IT IN WRITING.

Do you have any sudgestions on where I can get the CLOSED HUNTING SEASON REGULATIONS.

As for an answer from the DNR, I did receive two different answers for the same question in writing for you hotdog!.

SO you make of it what you want. The DNR will give you different answers to. Years ago they had that in the regs. Thats why I always put siloettes out on the opener to hunt the next morning. I DONT KNOW WHAT IS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT CLOSED SEASON!

Ps hobbydog if those are some of your pictures that get posted! Nice work! grin.gif Mike

I went on Wed early afternoon and got a couple more dumb ones at the first spot.  Everything has hardened up good now so its much easier walking than the mudhole last time.  Low lying areas with water had enough ice to hold the dog, but not me.  There's a lot of birds out there.  Maybe the most I've seen since I've had this dog, and she is 12 years old.

And eat!  Turkey, noodle, wild rice!   Darn good for first run ever! 😋
    • Kettle
I have not eaten one, they are protected generally here in the states and Canada although there have been special seasons for population control but I don't think it was harvested for meat. I've hunted in countries where they are not protected and was with someone who shot one, I didn't eat it but it just stunk after I picked it up.

Do you guys eat cormorant?  Even Indians call them fisheaters, and they don't eat fisheaters! 🤮

Happy Thanksgiving to you all as well. We had ours yesterday because our RN daughter in law had to work today.  So I'm trying my hand first time ever at turkey stock for soup later! 😋

Yes! Enjoy your turkey day everyone!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.   The ice is coming.  Eager to get out. Dug out my old strikemaster Thursday and got it ready. Smokes like  a chimney at times, but can't justify buying a new one when the old still works good.
    • Kettle
They definitely are stinky birds, the cormorant that is. The Sandhills don't really smell. When you clean them it smells more like venison than waterfowl. We figured he wouldn't pick it up since they must smell similar to chickens and my buddy has trained the Chesapeake to not go after their chickens at home
    • gimruis
Many years ago it was legal to shoot cormorants.  My Grandfather at the time also had a chesapeake bay retriever and he said that dog would retrieve anything in the worst conditions.   One time he told me he shot a cormorant.  The dog swam out out there and refused to pick it up.  Apparently because they are so nasty, stinky, and greasy.   He said its the only bird that dog would not retrieve in 11 years.
