Hit the St. Peter stretch last night with PapaGrump for the cat meet. Nice to see the FM'ers there (Dennis, Hanson, Rushing, PapaGrump, myself and I think Dark30 made a late appearance).

We headed out around 7 and hit some snags for channels till dark. We set up on the topside of a hole with some current. Didn't take long and PapaGrump caught the first Sumo, a while later I caught the second. In between we had no less than 6 nice runs, but couldn't hook up well (one PapaGrump had was bigger than the fish he boated earlier). In fact we pretty much ran out of bait.

Papa's fish was 33lb and mine was 34.

You'd almost think I was with a guide wink.gifwink.gifwink.gif

Darn guys. Nice Job!!

We ended up with 2 in the boat. Both in the very low teens. And I believe we each missed a run. I was winding up to take a swing at mine when Rushing says, "Thats the circle hook rod." Doh!!! Missed 'em.

That stretch of river is very interesting with a lot of structure. I think the difficult thing was figuring out which pieces of structure to fish.

That one photo of you dtro with the fog is pretty sweet! Looks like Papa Grump got some fish slime on his sweatshirt too. Nice!! smirk.gif

Very nice guys!

Kinda makes me think theres a guide running that boat! wink.gif

However on the slow side for us we boated the two smaller fish.

I had 4 nice runs and wiffed on 3 of them. Hmmm, 25% hook up ratio??? OUCH!

Thanks rushing.

It was good to fish with you again and thanks for sharing your stretch of river with us. It was a good time.

fog? what fog? The only thing I saw was smoke from the sizzlin monkey grin.gif

oh yeah, maybe it was fog smirk.gif

I was told by an experienced riverrat that eagles mean good luck....well, as we anchored an eagle soared above us laugh.gif

Not only that, but the northern lights made an appearance.

You guys must have been a little chilly around 4 this morning.

Nice fish! Only if we coulda hooked up with at least half the runs we got we coulda had some numbers. Oh well still had lots of fun out there with Hanson and Dennis. Hope you guys can make it down this way again next year! Maybe we'll be able to hook up with Papa Grump's "Not a Guide Shuttle Service" and get into some fish! grin.gif

Well I am off to do some more fishin tonight. smile.gif

tight lines guys!

Nice fish guys... Gee... I gotta book a trip at "Grumpy's Gide Service" sometime.... I was out sat. night around shakopee and we got a nice channel and lost five nice flathead runs.... I talked to another guy at the landing when we got off at 1:00 and they lost four runs.... darn fish!

Hey what's the rates @ Grumpy's anyway??? Oh... and how's that motto go..... If you don't like the service get out of the boat?? or something like that...... lol

Again, nice fish! I love the outine of the fish slime on papa's shirt... you can even see the fins, lol

How deep? Just wondering, haven't been out in a while and have had kind of a hard time with the bigger ones when I have been out.

Grump's Guide/Shuttle Service?! smile.giflaugh.gifgrin.gif Going rate is a little bump of this and a little bump of that and your good to go. Don't like the ride, exit is at the back grin.gif

Anyway we were fishing in really fast water on the top side of a 15' hole, concentrating on the current break where it fell into the hole. The boat was anchored in 2 feet of water at best. Lots of wood around the bend so we were getting the kitties as they were coming out to feed.Alot of shiners above us and as we shined the spotlight up stream, you could see the gar and possibly the Walleyes chasing them It was at my favorite shore spot in the area that has produced in the past when the water gets low.

The "hole" we fished wasn't your classic "big/deep hole". Matter of fact it was wasn't all that deep. Around 15ft. The current seemed to really have an effect. The runs and fish we boated came from the same SMALL location. It seemed to be a big difference where the bait was settling.

I have to work this weekend myself but I am free next weekend if ya wanna get out.

I was out last night at a new spot for me very very fishy looking area. A deep water eddy 12-14ft that jumped into a big nice 2-4ft shelf bait fish and surface acivity everywhere and not one single run. I tried attacking it from all angles and even drift a bully under a lighted bobber for about an hour.confused.gif

I was by myself and I though I heard someone on the bank above me so I turned around and shined my light and didnt see anyone till I looked down at my feet and there was a skunk! crazy.gif Not only that I saw two of the most giagantic spiders I have ever seen in MN they were big...I mean they had some weight on them. I should know there was one crawling on my leg. Looked like a smaller tarantula!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
