Gores Pool access

Recommended Posts

I'm interested in hunting Gores Pool this fall. I'm thinking more about using waders and a small number of decoys on some of the smaller bodies of water rather than using a boat on the bigger lakes ie North Lake. Is there any practical way to get in on foot? I drove around it for about an hour this afternoon and could only find the marked boat access points. Thanks.

You could walk the train tracks. If I were you, I would try to get across to Mud hen. Being it's so shallow, nobody will be there. Great lake to hunt too. But I cant see leaving my boat on the other side whilie I hunt. I hate to say it. But I trust no body in something I have invested in.

Just thinking about it. On the very south side on North there is a beaver dam no body really hunts because it's not boat accessible. That would be nice!

There is a access road to several beaver pounds just after you cross the bridge. Or the train track method works well too. Mud hen can be good.

Gores Pool is a WMA just southeast of Hastings. Thanks for the info re the tracks and trail. I checked it out today and I think that will be the ticket.

I grew up in the area and used to hunt the whole bottoms pretty extensively. Just watch using the tracks... I know they have tagged guys for using them to get to hunting spots. Technically they are private property and you can be tagged for trespessing. I used to muzzleload between the Vermillion River and Mud-Hen and got "chewed out" royal by a RxR crew checking tracks with one of those RxR pick-ups. They have had a lot of vandelism problems I guess and they will turn you in. I talked to them and pointed out I was 50 yards from my truck at the landing on the Vermillion and I assured them it was never me who caused the problems... since then I either boated back in or walked the ice if it was safe.

Good Luck!

Ken

Has anyone here had any luck on Rice Lake yet this year? All that rain a couple of weeks ago made the water level go way up and fishing opener for us was a complete bust ( although apparently someone on the lake caught a 31" walleye according to a DNR officer).   I'll be up there for at least part of the long weekend this weekend. Looking forward to some fishing. I'm contemplating targeting the bay that Morning Star Resort is on for some walleye. I don't claim to be an expert in fishing or fish behavior but it's early season so shallower seems to be better than deeper dropoffs like we would normally target during the summer. Forecasts I've seen suggest targeting bays too. Anyone have thoughts on that?   Good luck to anyone out there this weekend! Hopefully the fishing is back to normal after the weird start to the season.

Heading up to crane Lake area. How are conditions and any tips / pointers?

Yes indeed. We actually bought it together. We wedged the pontoon boat into that lift last fall and hoisted it out of the water. Unfortunately the water came up so much this spring, the pontoon couldn't float with the rising levels. There wasn't much that we could do opening weekend except wait for the water to drop and then assess the damage. It's mainly a garbage hauler so no big loss for a $500 boat/motor.

I forgot to post this but I got a jake during season B north of Princeton on some private land.  I had been hunting this flock of birds for 3 seasons now.  I hear and/or see them every day, but simply could not get a legal bearded turkey to come within range.  Finally, a hen came walking out with a jake and I dusted the jake on the 4th day of my hunt.  There's plenty of birds there, including several mature toms, so I intend to keep hunting there in the future as long as I can obtain permission.  The weather was downright terrible.  I had one nice morning of sunshine and then it was windy, rainy, and raw for days.  Saturday morning even produced a heavy summer-type down pour.  I was so thankful to be hunting in a blind.  I also saw a fair amount of other wildlife in four days, including deer, pheasants, a pair of raccoons, and a coyote.

I have questions about the following hypothetical. Buy used boat and trailer from Iowa Resident. Would need to transfer, and I have not done before. Duck boat, may occasionally fish out of it. Technically 15'11 1/2" long. Will have motor. Do I need a title? Does it need registration?   Same for trailer. Need a title? Need Registration? License Plate?   Thank you for any help.

I realize it's only been 2 days Raven77, but are you continuing to see the level decreasing?
