Just got back from an incredible trip to my favorite destination (the ol Miss). We boated walleye from 15 to 20 inches and nunerous smallies in the 17 to 19.5 inch range. Oh yeah, lots of nice accidental pike, slob rock bass, one small musky, one dumb redhorse. Talk about a great stress reliever. The fish were hot to trot on redtails, leeches, shad raps, and surface baits... A guy can't go wrong right now. The water's high enough to travel just about anywhere(carefully) and low enough to have excellent visiblity(good surface bite). Just get out there and like usual on the river if you don't get bit in 2-3 minutes keep moving. You'll know when you find them... If you haven't fished it before just pick a spot anywhere from Monticello to Brainerd and spend half a day exploring you have to try very hard to get skunked.

Gorrila-

Nice report. Did the topwater bite pick up after I left? I understand you picked up a another nice walleye.

I wish I could have hooked the 22-24 inch walleye that took a swipe at my shad rap at the side of the boat.

Looks to be a good start to fall bite.

yeah dan the local red-headed "indian" guide caught all the fish after you left. we went back to the walleye hole and he caught the last nice walleye along with two dandy smallies. Between rigging the anchor and netting his fish I could have just as well become his photographer since I could only catch logs... oh well, its his spot anyway.

hey fonz I was just curious how the cheese curds got a spy so deep into central MN ...

when he was younger all he had was purple clothes so he fit right in over here.

The Cheese curds didn't need a spy. They had the Vikings (well known as the Queens of Murphy's law) on their side.

EG....Purple clothes? Purple anything? I wouldn't even have a purple lure in my tackle box, even if it was the hottest bait on the river. I've always had better luck with the green and yellow lures....haven't you guys had the same good luck with greens and yellows compared to purple? grin.gif

Fonz, the secret is out... GREEN & YELLOW is the hottest color on the river and will be all the way through January smile.gif The purple and gold are just jealous because they didn't even realize that the upper 'sippi has been taken over by River Pack Rats smile.gif

fonz, I'm surprised you don't have green and gold feathers or vanes on your hunting arrows. I thought you were a dedicated fan! Get with the program dude!

BM's just a fair weather fan. I offered to get Favre to autograph something for him and he never gave me anything for him to sign. A real fan would have been all over that! grin.gif

You're not a MN native!!! So, you could easily be a Packer Fan!!! It's not as painful as being a purple fan. Yes, I'm from Wisconsin!!! Two Rivers....just 30 miles from Lambeau field.

SH - I still have that in the back of my head... I just didn't have anything to get "autographed" at the time. I'll have to work on getting something to you to get signed.

GO PACK . You don't see many purple & golds in WI, but you sure see a lot of GREEN & YELLOW in MN...and all over the country for that matter! America's Team! grin.gif

uh oh, keep talkin like that BM and fonz will adopt you! If I ever cheer for a team again it won't be the purple squad, you can bet on that. no football means more time to hunt and fish and I'm always in a good mood! wink.gif

In college, I lived downtown mpls just 2 blocks from the metrodome. Being the big Pack fan I am, that only fueled my intense...well let's just say dislike... for the viqueens. I had to restrain myself there... tongue.gif. In college we used to drive to WI to watch the Pack games grin.gif

The fact that Mike and Fonz look alike shouldn't surprise anyone. A profound lack of genetic diversity causes all Packer fans to look alike!

In the St. Cloud area, that's known as Stearns County Syndrome. 99% of Wisconsin looks the same, because even when our team sucks (and yes they do at times) we are wearing Green and Gold till the end. And, unlike EG, there is no cure for being a Packer Fan! Say CHEESE grin.gif

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
