Strongly Suggest Support For Lake V Slot <;))><

To all FM followers concerned about the future of Lake Vermillion’s walleye fishery: I strongly suggest you support the proposed slot and reduced bag limit. I have experienced the collapse of the walleye fishery in many NW WI lakes. The primary reason for the collapse is over harvest(from anglers and Native American Indian spearing). The fishing pressure on all MN and WI lakes has increased considerably over the past decade and will only increase over the next decade. In WI, despite bag limits of 2-3 fish, walleye populations will not recover. In the absence of strong walleye populations, largemouth and smallmouth bass populations have skyrocketed compounding the problem. Approximately 10 years ago in WI special regulations were put into effect to protect bass. With dwindling walleye populations the bass took off. Many lakes that once supported great multi-species fisheries, bass have become so numerous their growth rates have fallen to the point of stunting. Having lived with reduced walleye bag limits for over 15 years it’ really not a big deal. Fisherman will get used to it and the overall quality of the fishery will improve. I’m surprised one or both proposed new regulations weren’t incorporated years ago. I believe the MN DNR is on the right track in protecting a valuable MN resource. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for WI. I have fished Lake Vermillion since 1987 and have witnessed considerable changes in walleye numbers over the years. It’s a fantastic fishery that needs protection now, before it’s too late.

Good post WIN! I have a lot of faith that our DNR is going to get it done. They've already had success on a big scale on a number of major fisheries. In spite of a bit of back and forth, I think you can tell from the light hearted nature of a lot of these comments that we love our lake and are all committed to it! In fact, I'm gonna jump in the car now and the next time any of you guys will see me, I'll be casting, not typing!!!!
