I know there are homes on the Western Shore of this body of water, but I'm wondering if there is public access anywhere? Can it be accessed from the South via the Mayo Parking Lot? Thanks.

With your lot sticker, you can park there in the lot and just walk straight back to the lake or are you talking the smaller one surrounded by homes at the extreme SW corner of all that developement? The smaller one would be tough until ice covers it and access would have to come from the dam there, plus you'd have to stay on the ice.

How was the competition last weekend? Pretty hot, wasn't it?

Isn't Cascade Lake the same as the CC Manor pits? Right behind the fire station on 2nd St SW? I thought those were open to public fishing. Am I mistaken?

One of the lakes has a formal name, but I don't know which one. I simply refer to the whole shooting match as the cc pits. I don't care for formality and leave the zipper down when I wear a suit. lol.

I was just wondering CT, because in one of your previous posts you made it sound like it was trespassing to fish out there. Is it or not?

Sean....

No, these are public waters and can be fished within the limits of the law. One of the lakes is completely surrounded by privated homes except for where a closing dam sits at the north end of that puddle. The dam is a publicly owned structure and can be crossed. I suppose a small float or canoe could be hoisted up the face of the dam, thus making open water fishing an option.

We need to be mindful of where private property exists and not do anything that creates a problem in that respect. That particular lake I just mentioned has only that one point of entry unless you want to throw your float in at the hiway, which I guess I would not recommend.

Collectively, all of these pits are called the Country Club Pits....been that for years. As developement spreads around the lakes, new, formal names are given to the ponds- none of which I know. The biggest area of controversy has been around whether there is legal access on the west side of the Mayo Lots. Another poster (someone with specific legal defitions of legal boundaries at these reservoir sites) posted a while ago and cleared up this mess by indicating that Mayo does indeed own a portion of land outside of their enclosures and that makes entry there trespassing. I happen to know a resident of the big lake and go right thru his back yard, so for me entry is a moot issue. Until the city does something formal as far as a point of public access though, people need to know where they can and cannot go without causing a problem.

So....to answer your question more directly- no, the lakes are not private and can be fished. Much of the land surrounding the lakes is not public. And the public land is almost a no-no until it has an access site assigned.

Thanks for the info. Actually this morning whan I was there it was a bit dark and foggy. I may have to investigate some. I didn't know which one it was until I looked in the phone book map. I do know that it is not the one that goes out to the corner of 2nd st sw and 22. It's back in farther. Actually didn't use it for fishing, but swimming. In the short term I probably can continue to get access via a property owner, but I think he will be moving in the Fall and would like to continue doing some swimming there next year.

I'm not quite sure what the definate plans are, but I believe the City has plans for a future park around some of those water structures. I've read infomation on it before, but not quite sure how far off those plans are.

Tom, the race went really good. Finished in 2hr 5 minutes. That was for a .8 mile swim, 20.6 mile, and 5 mile run. Really happy with my time and good enough for 55th over all out of 203 participants. It was a bit warm, but fortunately it was during the morning and the weather wasn't too awefully bad. How was the North Shore?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
