Greetings. My son and I will be doing the loop from Lake One to Snowbank, through Thomas and Ima (which my Outfitter says has Lake Trout) in mid June. Where should we look for Lakers? What depth/temp will they hold at? What techniques would be useful? How essential would contour maps be? I know so little about this fish, whether they relate to structure or suspend, etc. Any help would be appreciated. Last summer was our first trip into Canoe Country, had a fabulous time, and can't wait to return. Thanks everyone.

Be sure to follow your map closely on LAke Insula. It's easy to get lost.

I have never fished either of those lakes before so I cannot help you with any particular spots but, Lake trout like to stay below the lakes thermocline. By mid june the lake should be warming up so the lakers are going to be getting deeper. I would look for humps that come up to around 30' from deep water and either jig with a 1 ounce jig or troll a rap or spoon with a trolling weight in front to get down deeper. Good luck with your trip hope you have a good time but anytime you are in the BWCA is a good time.

Fished Thomas Lake a few yrs. ago. It's a little work getting in there but real pretty country and some of the best eating lakers you'll ever find. We had our best luck using smelt and suckers on the bottom in 15 to 25 ft. of water.
