I am heading up to Basswood may 25th to the 31st was looking to get some info from people who just got back or are coming back this coming week. If anyone could give me water temps that would be great. any fishing reports will work to. I am going to try some laker fishing in canada for a few days, then hammer some walleyes and smallies. (hopefully). looking foward to hearing some reports and I will give my full report when I get back for the next groups. thanks

Fished the east end of Basswood on opener. It was cold. We caught an 8 lb laker in 6ft of water in a dark bottom bay a 1/2 mile from any deep water. The water was really cold. The few walleyes we caught on the east end were males and had spawn oozing out of them. As for pike we caught a bunch but nothing over 32 inches. Did get a 19 inch smallie.

Good luck fishing and pray for warmer weather.

We just got back from our trip yesterday. The ice just came off most of the lakes up there so the walleyes are just starting to spawn. The northerens were bitin hard though. I hope you have a good sleeping bag!!
Good Luck

David I was wondering if you caught that laker on purpose or if it was an accident. It sounds like the water will still be cold enough to find them by trolling. Is there any certain color that you have found that works better than others I've never fished basswood before. I have always done well with a clown colored husky jerk, but they discontinued that color. So I am scrambling to find a new favorite lure. Thanks to you and Farly for your replys they have helped out quite abit.

thanks again.

Husky Jerk,

The lake trout was caught by mistake on a #9 floating Rapala - perch colored. Black/Silver and Blue/Silver work well for lakers. I normally will use a #18 floating Rapala and a bead chain sinker when trolling.

Good luck fishing.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got back from Basswood 6-1 wish my report would be better, but we had beautiful weather ( too good) Walleyes were hard to find the ones we did catch were on canoe island with rainbows. Smallie action was good though shaded areas were the best. I think if we would have got up early in the morning we could have done well with the walters. to many bottle bass at night I guess.
