Island Lake - Duluth - Near the Cloquet River inlet. Seriously, a walleye every cast from 5:15AM to about 6:00AM, ranging from 14 to 25 inches (she was a spawned out female). I had three eyes in the boat before my Dad had a line in the water- he was too busy with the landing net. After 6AM, the armada of boats started to show up and the fishing died off too.
Do you wonder if it was a coincedence? I don't.

We got a late start Saturday morning and decided to try the St. Louis River for a while. We didn't do as well as some, but I think we got there too late for the good bite. I did manage to release a 20 inch male though. That evening we went up to Island lake. It was slow right up until about forty five minutes or so before dark, then we had good fishing. Largest fish was a 21 inch which was released to bite my hook another day.

Good fishing

birch lake was slow, water temps in low 40's. kept 3 15 inchers and switched to pike. caught over 30 pike, kept 20 lbs of fillet and went through 8 dozen ciscoes. now that was having a good time!! lots of beer consumed also!!

St Louis River on opener.
Fished from 5:30 to 10:30, up near Hwy 23. 9 walleyes caught, all males that were milking heavily. One 14", the other 8 were from 17.5-22" and all but one caught trolling upstream with small rapala's. Havn't made it out since, but will be out tonight somewhere on the river. No incidental smallies or pike caught which is kinda unusual. I usually catch at least a coupla pike while trolling plugs??

I posted this on the open water forum. I hope the pic.s turn out.
Fished out of Ely area. We had a party of 9. Kept 54 2-3 lb.walleye's and released at least that many. Some big northern's mixed in and a 4.5 lb. Samllmouth released. If that wasnt enough I released a 32 in. walleye during sat. night in the gail winds. Also my nephew relaeased a 30in. a half hour later.

ST,
Thats got to be the best opener report this year, congrats to your whole group and I'm green with envy grin.gif , still looking for my first #10'er!!
Hit the river again last night for a couple of hours form 6-8. Caught 4 and lost that many jigging around buoy 83. Better luck with leeches than minnows. Water warmed up from 43 on saturday to 45.5 last night. Hits were light, males still milking. Lots of boats out there. Plan on hitting it early Sat morning near 83 again and being off by 10am, if anyone else is out there I'm in a green lund w'windshield/90 honda, stop by and say hi and we can compare notes. Xplorer

St. Louis River. 2 in boat. 14 wally's-14" to 16.5". Full of milk. On the water from 10ish to 5:30pm. We just moved to a spot and caught 4 fish in about 10 minutes and some guy and his wife in a Lund just about ran over my boat trying to move into the small area we were working. I think they got the msg from my glare and gave us some space.

ST,

NICE PICS. I was on the river for the opener. Got 3 in my boat 16,18&20inches. One of my friends in another boat only caught 1 walleye just happened to be a 29 incher. We saw a lot of boats catching fish. All the way from Spirit Lake to bouy 83. I'm going to try and make it out Saturday afternoon.

Good Luck

Biggest walleye we heard of from Basswood was a 30" Catch & Release on that Saturday.

We saw the picture and it was a great looking fish! And nice that it was put back by the fisherman, a 12 year old boy! :-)

Someone raised that kid right!

Went by Bayfront on my way in to work about 6:45 and saw the boats getting ready to head out for the tourny. Sure didnt look like there was 150 out there, wonder if they didnt fill up. Overall not a bad day to be out, will be interested to see if they find the big girls or if anyone heads out into Superior.
I plan to be out on the river by 5 tomorrow morning and fish til 10-11. Good luck to everyone this weekend.

Just got off the River, and did fairly well. My Brother caught a 30.25", my other Brother and I both caught a 26" apiece. Kept two that were 22 and a 20 plus a few smaller. Used gold spinners with 2oz. bottom bouncers. Leeches did not fair so well. The big boy was caught on crawler, and the other two chubs. Water temp was 55 when we came in. The river is just gonna get better. Seen a green lund with side console/w windshied and Honda motor and thought it might be you xplorer, guess not. fishead.gif

Will be out Wed. and Thurs, as the wife has me busy today. dark2.gif Did well on leeches yesterday towards the end of my outing. Hope your doing well out there yourself. Junky...... flash.gif

Junky,
I will be out tonight for awhile. Wondering if you have been down in the spirit lake area? I think i will put in down there tonight and give it a try, will be nice not being crowded one time anyway. I'm gonna try and get out again thursday night if the weather cooperates, i have full windshield and usually green carhart jacket on. What type of rig you got? i'll keep an eye out for ya, and post how i do down there later tonight.

Junky,
Fished the spirit lake area tonight for about 2 hours, pulled cranks thru south of the island. Have done well there before when there in there but not a hit tonight. Perfect walleye chop too. Talked to a few guys at the landing, mostly smaller fish. DNR was checking all boats pulling out, did see one guy get ticketed for undersize walleye.
Good luck the next couple of days. Oh ya, water temp was 55, really warmed up on the surface since sunday.

Was out on the river for the 11th straight day yesterday. I caught a 31.5 inch Walleye that my scale said weighed 10.5 pounds but I think it may have been heavier. We have been doing real well up above the 23 bridge and in a few areas below. Lots of 23-25.5 inch fish. Me and Poutslayer got over 100 fish one day! The River is alive and well!! Good Fishing everyone.

Hey xplorer. Suprised to hear ya didn't get a hit in that area. I didn't make it out today as I had planned, bummer. I run a 14ft, green Crestliner Angler tiller with 25 4-stroke Yamaha. Have wackers and front and rear Minnkotas. Look for me out there. If I don't make it out tomorrow, won't get out till Tues. or Wed. of next week. Hope ya do better this weekend. Junky.......

Tried liked you said, lots of chop, drifted from 67 down to 58 on the island side not super but keep me busy. leeches seemed to be the best but it was getting dark when we startered Boy once you got past the island, it was like driving on the freeway. Some guys do not have any respect for those fishing. later the mailman

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
