Beaverlake, Geesh your not excited to get up here and fish are ya. smile.gif You remind me of my lab's waiting to get out of the crate just before the hunt. lol But thats a good thing. It's good see someone fired up to go fish. Any connection to Beaver Lake north of Twig?
Rice lake was good last summer for eye's. In the last few year's the hammer handel's have been getting thick. It's rare to catch big eye's in Rice. Most are a pound to pound and a half. Work it over a little and you can find them.

There is a thread on Brule all ready. Work the reefs and wind blown shoreline. Get out of the evening and night bite. Jigs and lighted bobbers.
Big water big Northern's. Cast the shore line's.
Have a good trip and try not wear your grampa out. grin.gif

Are we talking about the rice lake by Duluth?? Now is the time for fishing Ricce Lake Alot of eyes in the lake nothing big (unless you find them) but eatable. ST you have to agree, that this is the worst boat ramp in the area. Anybody who has put a boat inther, knows that youy have to keep a strap on the boat to keep it from coming off the trailor. Maybe we should ??? the DNR as why this ramp is in such bad shape for the amount of usage

your not lying about the ramp being in bad shape....

i think that would be a good question for the dnr.. they should be able to do something about that..
i would like to see a launch on both sides of the dock, instead of just the one..

The crappy boat lauch and the poor parking lot are the reasons I'm heading to Island Lake tomorrow AM. Good luck to you who do go to Rice, however.
I've had enough with poor landings.
Once I took my big boat to Cornucopia, and found that their concrete ramp runs out with a foot and a half drop off shorter than any reasonable ramp should - couldn't see it end with the murky water. I had a 10,000 lb trailer hung up on concrete. I had to wade in (In May) and lever it up with a steel bar, while my wife drove the truck out.
That put an end to my endeavors with poor landings. Like the rest of you, I work too darn hard to have stupid things rip apart my stuff.
I'm done grumbling now.
Go get em boys.

Ya its a crappy ramp. The dock is on the short side too. When you have that wind blowin down the lake it makes it tough to line the boat up on the trailer.
Evntam, I know what you mean about the short pad's. The landing in Grand Portage has a bid step at the end of it. Had my trailer with the 25 ft Bayliner hung on it. frown.gif
The landing on the end of the Park Point is an other bad landing for big boats.

Beaverlake, hmmm i remember that lake from back when we had a cabin on Big Pequaywam. Now thats the lake you wanna fish for big eyes.Find a way onto the Big P. Its a private lake with no access so get to know someone and tell em take a kid fishin (even if your just a big kid)lolThis time of year the eyes will be stacked up on the north end near wolf creek.fish the gravel shoal on the north east end of the lake after dark for the big ones.shiners,Big ones work best!!!!!!!!

the northens are just starting to make a come back in beaver, they are all pretty much hammer handles, but there are fun as hell to catch..

To beaverlakeman,
Some 30 years ago I was involved{with a group of guys from Two Harbors,Clover Valley, and one from Duluth}in building a hunting shack on Beaver/Snake Lake on the rosinee truck Trail. We had to bring every thing in in winter or by boat to build it.The lumber and stuff used tu build it we got from tearing down a two story house in Two Harbors.
I recognize th name Ted Marken as maybe the guy from Duluth that was involved in this shack
I understand that the original shack burned and a new one built in its place. Could this be the same place?

Beaver
I was up on Brule in the BWCA late last summer. We were on the lake for less than 5 minutes and we saw a Moose and her calf. Got some cool pictures. We did very well on Smallies and eyes. Let me know if you need any info.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
