fishing for kids

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm new to the area (moved in last week from Kentucky) and I'm wondering if you can help out with some suggestions of where to take my kids (ages 9 & 11) for some good crappie/sunny fishing? I live in St. Michael and have a fishing boat, but I'm reading a few posts here that tell me some of the lakes are best suited for skiers and tubers. I'd really appreciate some good advice...my boys love to fish and have been looking forward to this for a while! Thanks! -Jim

If you are new to the area, I would suggest you buy a map book of area lakes. I believe it is called Sportsman Connection. It is available at most tackle outlets(Gander, Wal-Mart etc). It will give you a basic map of area lakes, boat access points, hints for where to fish and DNR information for lakes. It is a spiral ring type of book. Mine takes quite a beating and needs to be replaced. I can tell you to try Indian lake for sunnies and bass, but you still need to know where the access is, the structure or just where is that lake is. Good luck!

Welcome to FishingMinnesota Jim!

If you are looking for some good sunfish and crappie action, don't look any further than your back yard! A lot of the smaller wright county lakes will give you plenty of action!

You will find that this site will give you more than enough information to get out and find fish BUT you'll have to go out and fish em' because honey holes normally aren't shared. Just a start in the right direction!

Lakes I've been out and seen plenty of fish are Sugar, Cedar, and Sylvia/Twin. But those are only a few. I know guys were picking up fish on some of the smaller lakes near Clearwater........do a search on the sight within this forum (Annandale-Buffalo-Big Lake) and you'll see quite a few more lakes come up!

Good Luck and WELCOME!

If you wanna catch huge numbers of 5-8 inch sunnies and a few crappies of the same size, go to Indian Lake south of Sugar Lake on Hwy 7. It's a nice small lake with LOTS of sunnies. Non-stop action. My friend and I caught over 100 each in a few hours a couple weeks ago. I wasn't shy about keeping a few as the lake is overrun with them.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! I also appreciate the info. We went to Beebee(sp?) for a couple hours tody and had a ball. I will definately be getting one of the suggested maps, but in the meantime, can anyone tell me where Indian Lake and Sugar Lake are? and where the landing is? Thanks again!

the north shore of suger on on cty rd 7 out of maple lake.

Take cty rd. 37 into maple lake, to cty rd 8 take a right on 8 to 123 take a left on 123 to 7 take a right on 7, the access is about 1 mile down the road, go slow you can not miss it. To get to indian instead of taking a right on 7 take a left go to the 1st right and it should be on top of the hill( this is a quess on indian), but pretty sure it is right. Good luck.

Here's a couple more;

Charlotte, right near beebe, has a shallow bay (at the access) that can be good for panfish action.

Sullivan, just west of Buffalo is a great panfish lake and you'll practically have it to yourself.

Constance, north of Buffalo can be a good crappie lake, fish the floating docks and weedlines.

Stay away from Pulaski- too much traffic, and Buffalo can be productive but it's a mess in the summer.

These should keep you and the kids busy!

One more, try just below the dam on the clearwater river, a couple miles north of the town of Clearwater on Co. 75. With all the rain, it will be running fast and chock full of carp. Fish the fast water with a three way rig and a #4 hook full of corn. Keep your lines tight and be ready!

You'll catch fish until your arms are sore.

Has anyone here had any luck on Rice Lake yet this year? All that rain a couple of weeks ago made the water level go way up and fishing opener for us was a complete bust ( although apparently someone on the lake caught a 31" walleye according to a DNR officer).   I'll be up there for at least part of the long weekend this weekend. Looking forward to some fishing. I'm contemplating targeting the bay that Morning Star Resort is on for some walleye. I don't claim to be an expert in fishing or fish behavior but it's early season so shallower seems to be better than deeper dropoffs like we would normally target during the summer. Forecasts I've seen suggest targeting bays too. Anyone have thoughts on that?   Good luck to anyone out there this weekend! Hopefully the fishing is back to normal after the weird start to the season.

Heading up to crane Lake area. How are conditions and any tips / pointers?

Yes indeed. We actually bought it together. We wedged the pontoon boat into that lift last fall and hoisted it out of the water. Unfortunately the water came up so much this spring, the pontoon couldn't float with the rising levels. There wasn't much that we could do opening weekend except wait for the water to drop and then assess the damage. It's mainly a garbage hauler so no big loss for a $500 boat/motor.

I forgot to post this but I got a jake during season B north of Princeton on some private land.  I had been hunting this flock of birds for 3 seasons now.  I hear and/or see them every day, but simply could not get a legal bearded turkey to come within range.  Finally, a hen came walking out with a jake and I dusted the jake on the 4th day of my hunt.  There's plenty of birds there, including several mature toms, so I intend to keep hunting there in the future as long as I can obtain permission.  The weather was downright terrible.  I had one nice morning of sunshine and then it was windy, rainy, and raw for days.  Saturday morning even produced a heavy summer-type down pour.  I was so thankful to be hunting in a blind.  I also saw a fair amount of other wildlife in four days, including deer, pheasants, a pair of raccoons, and a coyote.

I have questions about the following hypothetical. Buy used boat and trailer from Iowa Resident. Would need to transfer, and I have not done before. Duck boat, may occasionally fish out of it. Technically 15'11 1/2" long. Will have motor. Do I need a title? Does it need registration?   Same for trailer. Need a title? Need Registration? License Plate?   Thank you for any help.

I realize it's only been 2 days Raven77, but are you continuing to see the level decreasing?
