My family and I will be up to fish the river in about ten days. Does anybody have any recent information on the bite in the river? How's the water level? How are the bugs? Do you have any suggestions for finding and catching some fish?

There are a few posts about this river in the forum from last year. I'm going up there in August, my first time! Sounds like it's old school spoon fishing for pike and live bait fishing for walleyes. I'm excited about working for the smallmouth! Please let me know how it goes and any hints! I suppose you could also call up to the resort to make sure you bring the right tackle!

  • 3 weeks later...

T-Water, we just returned from the Vermilion River and I must honestly say we had only a "fair" experience. The deer flies and black flies were terrible. (Maybe they will be better since you are going later. I would take plenty of repellent.) The wind, which was almost constant, made it difficult to position the boat and fish. The temperatures also fluctuated dramatically during our week. Plan for hot or cold. We caught a few pike; they seemed to prefer buzz baits, (bright colors) and crankbaits -perch or gold colored, and spinners with gold blades. We probably did the best on smallmouth bass; they prefered gold spinners or leeches fished under a slip bobber. Fished for panfish some with nightcrawlers and leeches -caught bluegill, perch, and rockbass. Panfishing was slow also. If you are going to Goldmine, he will suggest some areas for you to try for the time you are there. I wish I had a better report for you; it just seemed like a lot was working against us. The bottom line suggestion I would give you is be sure to take some leeches; they worked about the best. Good luck!

Thanks for the info, sorry to hear it didn't go as well as you'd hoped. I'm hoping to have better weather and less, flies (I got murdered wading in the Kettle River this weekend). I'm going up for three days gonna try for some pike and smallies, thinking about bringing up the musky gear and shake things up a bit (big pike?) Were you

generally drifting and throwing, trolling or what. Also wondering if it's worth my time to bring up waders? How was the resort?

T-water, we did a little of everything. We drifted and casted; we trolled, we used trolling motors and casted as we moved along, and we we even anchored and fished slow, which worked the best for the smallies. I would not think the area would work well for waders. There is a lot of weedy, mucky bottom. The river is often 8 ft. deep or more. Also, the water is stained so it would be difficult to see what was ahead. The camp is just your basic fishing camp, no frills. Leif will try to point you in the right direction for fish. Good Luck!

Heading up to crane Lake area. How are conditions and any tips / pointers?
    • SkunkedAgain
Yes indeed. We actually bought it together. We wedged the pontoon boat into that lift last fall and hoisted it out of the water. Unfortunately the water came up so much this spring, the pontoon couldn't float with the rising levels. There wasn't much that we could do opening weekend except wait for the water to drop and then assess the damage. It's mainly a garbage hauler so no big loss for a $500 boat/motor.

I forgot to post this but I got a jake during season B north of Princeton on some private land.  I had been hunting this flock of birds for 3 seasons now.  I hear and/or see them every day, but simply could not get a legal bearded turkey to come within range.  Finally, a hen came walking out with a jake and I dusted the jake on the 4th day of my hunt.  There's plenty of birds there, including several mature toms, so I intend to keep hunting there in the future as long as I can obtain permission.  The weather was downright terrible.  I had one nice morning of sunshine and then it was windy, rainy, and raw for days.  Saturday morning even produced a heavy summer-type down pour.  I was so thankful to be hunting in a blind.  I also saw a fair amount of other wildlife in four days, including deer, pheasants, a pair of raccoons, and a coyote.

I have questions about the following hypothetical. Buy used boat and trailer from Iowa Resident. Would need to transfer, and I have not done before. Duck boat, may occasionally fish out of it. Technically 15'11 1/2" long. Will have motor. Do I need a title? Does it need registration?   Same for trailer. Need a title? Need Registration? License Plate?   Thank you for any help.

I realize it's only been 2 days Raven77, but are you continuing to see the level decreasing?

Sight fished this one, also got a 19" off a bed with a senko but didn't get a picture because my phone died. Length was 14" for the one in the photo. Haven't been able to get out much recently, but I should be able to go Saturday.
