Long time listener first time caller. I am heading up to basswood lake and I am going to be camping on the MN side but would like to do some lake trout fishing on the canadian side to. Does anybody know if I need a border crossing permit to just fish during the day? Any replys would be greatly appreciated. I've tried the DNR and nothing and the Ontario tourism all I get is the after hours hotline.

call the Ely Chamber or any outfitter for the info you ask about. Hope you are not thinking about going some as the ice is getting black.

You do need a remote border crossing permit to enter Canada for the day. You will also need a Quetico Day Use pass. You can get the crossing permit from Canadian immigration. You can pick up a Quetico Day Use permit at the Canadian Ranger Station at Prairie Portage.

I hope this helps some.

You will also need a Canadian fishing license. Get that up at the border, at Prairie Portage Ranger station. Or if you won't be going through that area, call Wally's Dry Goods & Bait at 807 597 4433. They will get you a license over the phone and then mail it to you.
