Elk Wallows

Canuck

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anybody has hunted elk wallows? I am planning on hunting elk this fall with a bow and am aware of 2 elk wallows that have have been active in the past couple of years. I have NO idea when elk may use wallows, is it early in the morning, at night or during the day? I know they use them when the rut is on but at what time of the day do they usually return to them. If anybody has hunted them in the past or aware of elk's pattern (what little they have) I would much appreciate it.

Where I grew up in Western Montana we seen more use of the wallows in early season during midday toward afternoon. They used the mud to keep biting flies off them. My cousins regularly hunt the wallows with bows for the early season and have good luck.

I have hunted in Colorado - Elk. I usually take off as early as I can get up - sometimes 3 or 4am. Then walk as much as I can. About miday 11-1 I take a nap near a wallow. I have not seen alot of bulls (couple) but have seen many cows.

Also, think about where you would like to nap. A ridge in the sun out of the wind. Good place to sit for an hour or two.

I think the best advice I can give is... spend ALL of your time out looking. Dont go back for lunch - when that one in a lifetime bull comes out you will be happy. You can sleep when you get home smile.gif
