Options for Eagle Talon with no compression on cyl. 2

Doonbuggy

Question

A buddy of mine has a gorgeous '97 Eagle Talon with only 55,000 miles, however it's been determined that the #2 cylinder has zero compression.

I'm not a gearhead at all, but his options seem to be:

1. engine overhaul, estimating $3k - 5k (no real quotes yet)

2. donate it to an organization and reap the tax benefits next spring or,

3. ???

Any comments/thoughts would be appreciated. The car is in otherwise great shape and he loves driving it, but it's hard to justify spending a lot of money on a vehicle that is already eight years old. Can it be fixed for less doing something else?

Thanks in advance. -DB

Install a 2.5l V6 from a '97 Sebring.....

I've never heard of that, and I've had 4 eagle talons/mitsubishi eclipses over the years. The 2.0 4 cylinder from the Sebring would fit if the talon is non-turbo (same block, different head), but I doubt the V6 would. Is your friend's Talon turbocharged? If it is, the engine code is 4G63T and you can pick up a motor, tranny, and turbo for under $1600. $3K to $5K is insane!! If it is a non-turbo it has the same engine block as a Dodge Neon, Avenger, etc., 420A is the code, and you can get a complete short block for $1K.

I don't know the fitting of motors but I have a good running '97 sebring V6 that I would like to get out of here.....cheap (a lot less than what you listed).

Send me an email, I will deal with Rick and FM later (sales fees).

There are tons of Talon and eclipse forums to be found online, I'll bet you could find a huge amount of info on those cars, not to mention I'll bet you could find cheaper quality mechanics and parts. First step would be to take the car to a dealer or qualified person and find out what's wrong first, then you can search up your options. Heck I know I could find a whole new block for my car for 3k new and there are so many choices out there if I wanted to put a used engine in there. I search some talon/eclipse forums and ask those who knwo these cars inside and out what they think. I can't post any links (forum rules....) so I can't help you anymore than that, but there is so much info to be found online it's crazy it'll be harder to sort the info than it will be to find it.

I'll second what mnrstrider said. Here is a very helpful hint for searching online for information about these cars: they are referred to as a "DSM" by insiders. This stands for Diamond Star Motors, referring to the fact that they were sold under both the Mitsubishi (diamond) and Eagle/Plymouth brands (star). A great site for used parts is dsmtrader dot com, find that site and you'll be up to your eyeballs in used parts.

Very good stuff guys. The talon is a turbo model (front wheel drive) and there's even a motor for sale at that dsm website for $1,400.

Thanks again - this may prove to be a great option.

Valv - in case he just wants to get a new vehicle, would you have interest in buying as is (I could send pics via email)? Evidently a "boroscope" (??) was used and it was determined that the second cylinder is scratched which is causing the problems.

For a little over $3000 you could put in a Jasper remanufactured engine rather than rebuild what you have. Then you are going with basically a new power plant, used engines are a little scary because who knows if you aren't 75 miles from the same thing going wrong again... Rebuilding is an OK option too, but I don't think its worth $3000 and I don't know why it would cost that much unless you really done some damage to the heads too.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
