I was wondering if anyone has fished any of the three fishing piers located in the St. louis river bay around the two big bridges that go over to superior(one is 2 and I think the other is 53). Sorry I don't know the area to well. If you have what kind of fish will you find there? what do they bite on? I havent fished there before but I plan on trying it out soon. Thank you for your help!

ONE OF THE PIERS YOU MIGHT BE REFERRING TO IS THE ARROWHEAD PEIR IN SUPERIOR. IN THE SUMMER IT GETS TO BE O.K. FOR WALLEYES AND NORTHERN BUT I GUARENTEE IT WILL BE PACKED WITH PEOPLE AND BOATS LEAVING THE LAUNCH
IT IS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR FISHING AREAS TO FISH OFF OF SHORE IN SUPERIOR

Hello Fishindm,

Welcome to the forum, and to the Duluth area. I have seen people fishing from the dock under the high bridge, hwy 53, but not sure what, if anything they catch there. I do know that they catch some fish off of what they call the Arrowhead pier. That's the one in Superior by the landing at the end of Belknap. You may, or may not, catch crappies, pike, a few walleyes in the spring of the year, maybe a catfish. There are also shorfishing opportunities way upstream right away in the spring up by the hwy 23 bridge. You have to go all the way through Gary New Duluth to get out there, but there is one pier, and a couple spots from shore you can fish. There is also a fishing Pier at the Boy Scout landing, which is right at the end of Gary, as you round the first corner. You'll see the signs for the landing.

Good Luck

Set the Hook!!

I do not know where you are from, but I would not call them fishing piers in the true sense like I have seen other fishing piers in other states. What and when are planning your trip to the Duluth area maybe can help out a little more

I live in Minneapolis and I found these piers in a map book they sell at gander mountain. I was planning on going up sometime the end of next month or early may. I fish mostly for Pike and walleye but I am gonna do a lot more musky fishing this year. So, thanks for all you guys help!

Ive fished the arrowhead pier many times and it can be good for smallmouth, pike, catfish and walleye. It used to be really good for walleyes in the summer but the last couple years have been really slow...ever since the zebra mussels have gotten thick there. Alot of times youll reel in and there will be a big gob of zebras on your line. Its still almost always good for something. Fish around the shallower edges for pike/bass and the deeper parts for walleye with a leech or crawler. It can get crowded but its a big pier and you can usually find a spot.

Fishingdm welcome to the sight and I hope the info I give you helps! First off these piers and docks are all part of the St.Louis River and bay wich means fishing from them, or at least keeping fish caught off them, opens with the Mn. fishing opener. The St.Louis is a border water between Mn. & Wi. Check your MN. regulations for any ?. There are several places in this area to fish from shore, piers, docks and land. I will give you some of the ones I know of. Starting in Superior Wi. there is the Barkers Island fishing platform.Take Hwy.2 into Superior and follow to Barkers Island its across the water from the Whaleback boat and you can park right at the platform. Fishing is best here in late May and threw June. Cast floating Lindy style rigs off the bottom or when the fish are in you can catch them on Little Cleos or stickbaits. Second would be the Namadgi River just down Hwy. 2 a few miles. There is a new fishing platform below the trailer park. Third is the Arrowhead pier. It is a small section of the old Arrowhead Bridge that they saved to fish from. For the most part the guys there fish Lindy rigs off the bottom and use Bobby Pins on the eyes of their rods and loop the line into the pin to allow light bites to release line without the fish feeling resistance. Crawlers, leeches seem to work later in the season but minnows can be good early. Moving back to Duluth MN. across the bridge. Ill start down in the bay. First spot to try would be the pier under the High (Blatnik) Bridge. Lots of current usually so adapt to that and all the usual live baits will work on a Lindy rig. At times vertical jigging works well to. Second would be the dock at the smithville landing. Take Grand ave out to Smithville and look for the public boat landing sign a couple miles past the Zoo. Same techniques. Third is Boyscout landings T dock. Take Grand Ave past Gary New Duluth and look for the boat landing sign. Here you will be with lots of people and boats so get there early to get a spot. Later into July/Aug the crowds arent as bad and you can toss out sucker minnow on a bobber for northerns and muskie. Fourth is a small shore spot on Grand Ave. going west towards Jay Cook State Park. It is across from what is called Perch Lake and you park and find a open spot on the river bank. Fifth is shore spots at 130th Ave. west, take a left on what I think is River St. but it runs along the river and you will see the spots all the way down to the dead end. Take it slow the locals down there usually arent to friendly due to the mess some people leave behind. When you leave please make sure its cleaner than when you got there! Sixth is a shore spot below the 23? bridge. There is a small campground under the bridge on the MN. side and they charge 2-3$ to fish there but this is often real good the first month of the season. Bussy too! Lots of current and snags so beware. Cast 1/4 ounce jigs and live bait upsteam and hop them with the current. Also slip bobbers set just off bottom and drifted works. All these spots are best for walleye but you can get northerns, rock bass, suckers, catfish, sturgeon, muskie and smallmouth bass. Hope this helps but if you come up in May - Aug. or have ? toss it on this sight and I will try to be of some help. Good Fishing and I hope you enjoy the NORTHLAND.

  • 2 weeks later...

Northlander has it down very good. I fish the river several times a week and used to be on shore most of the time. The best fishing pier day in day out is the Boy Scout pier. But the area under the Highway 23 bridge can be great. One other shore area that is great but a little walk can be the entry ways in the harbor, especially the Superior entry. If you post before you come up, we can give you more current information. I run a fishing league on the river and we have boats on it about every day of open water.

Have a great day and better fishing,
Doug

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
